It finally happened: Ancient Aliens (the TV show!) asked for permission to use some of our 3D reconstructions. I said no, because:

  1. They repeatedly laid claims based on pseudo-science, creationism, and magic (!).

  2. AA is inherently racist and colonialist by proposing ideas on extraterrestrials creating monuments of the human past.

  3. AA is actively hurting the respectability of real archaeological work.

Well, that felt rather good!

: @scschmidt describes here what analysis is and how it is used to cluster data and create wonderful informative maps. It is a useful approach at very different scales. If you are interested, have a look here. 🏺

#500CharAbstracts: 🏺 Jeremy Smoak & Alice Mandell explore the monumentality of inscriptions in Jerusalem’s urban spaces and thereby also texts themselves. These convey memories within a larger political or social narrative than architecture.

This article is part of a broader book about monumentality across ancient civilisations published 2019 at Transcript: Size Matters.

The Stone Building (Steingebäude) of Uruk is a semi-subterranean building made of stone, that comprises of three rectangle rooms, that are nested in each other. The access was made trough a ramp leading down from the surface level. The inner floor was paved with stone slabs.
The function might be a grave. It is also unclear, if the building was only sub-terranean and had a flat or no roof at all, or if a super-structure was standing above the Stone Building.

So for a while now, I started to collect Indiana Jones comics. I find them fascinating not only for a good (fantasy) story (definitely not for the archaeology!), but more so for the readers comments…

This summer semester (2023) a new batch of Archaeogames were created by students of the University of Cologne in one of my courses. In this post I summarize and (of course) praise them! You can also try them out, as they are free…

Mari, located in the Middle Euphrates region in Syria is one of the most famous sites in the Near East. It dates from the 3rd to the beginning of the 2nd millennium BCE.

A new research team has continued the excavations at Mari. One of the project’s new objectives is a detailed investigation of the city’s fortification walls.

We developed a scientifically well-founded reconstruction of the fortification walls, the city gate, and an adjoining residential building.

ICYMI: Analysing video games sometimes leads to harsh critique. I asked myself why that is and why nobody needs to be concerned. Gender, Sexism and Racism are problems of many current video games and talking about it is important.

We scientifically reconstructed and visualised the Riemchen-Building. Is was constructed subterranean and was only looking out of the sourounding area. It is assumed, that the building was only accessible through the roof with the help of a ladder.

The mystery of the Hanging Garden of Babylon by S. Dalley is a must-read. It perfectly shows that we always need to re-evaluate our sources. It is well-written and takes you on an archaeological detective story, that reveals the real location…

🏺 The so-called “Red House” was uncovered at the centre of the lower city of Tell Schech Hamad. It was built and utilised during the Neo-Babylonian Period (626–539 BCE), and eventually destroyed by fire.
We created a 3D model of the re-plastered remains of the “Red House” in order to gain a visual impression of the project’s possible outcome regarding the heights of its walls etc. Additionally, the visualisations were used to present the project to potential sponsors.

🏺 Tepe Gawra, kurdish for “the great mound”, is situated in . The site offers an almost continuous sequence of occupation from the 5th to the 2nd millennium BCE. The “Round House” itself dates to around 4000 BCE.

Our architectural reconstruction is based upon analyses, the excavation reports, and related literature. Since the reconstruction is, of course, only tentative, we decided to illustrate the level of certainty in the model through colour coding.

ArchaeoBasti,
@ArchaeoBasti@mastodon.online avatar

@amaury_h ah yes, you are right. If I remember correctly, the three-colored model was a very old student project of mine and the "realistic" model was a newer version. That's why the access changed. But overall it is a very old project
