It finally happened: Ancient Aliens (the TV show!) asked for permission to use some of our 3D reconstructions. I said no, because:

1. They repeatedly laid claims based on pseudo-science, creationism, and magic (!).

2. AA is inherently racist and colonialist by proposing ideas on extraterrestrials creating monuments of the human past.

3. AA is actively hurting the respectability of real archaeological work.

Well, that felt rather good!

The Stone Building (Steingebäude) of Uruk is a semi-subterranean building made of stone, that comprises of three rectangle rooms, that are nested in each other. The access was made trough a ramp leading down from the surface level. The inner floor was paved with stone slabs.
The function might be a grave. It is also unclear, if the building was only sub-terranean and had a flat or no roof at all, or if a super-structure was standing above the Stone Building.

Mari, located in the Middle Euphrates region in Syria is one of the most famous sites in the Near East. It dates from the 3rd to the beginning of the 2nd millennium BCE.

A new research team has continued the excavations at Mari. One of the project’s new objectives is a detailed investigation of the city’s fortification walls.

We developed a scientifically well-founded reconstruction of the fortification walls, the city gate, and an adjoining residential building.

We scientifically reconstructed and visualised the Riemchen-Building. Is was constructed subterranean and was only looking out of the sourounding area. It is assumed, that the building was only accessible through the roof with the help of a ladder.

🏺 The so-called “Red House” was uncovered at the centre of the lower city of Tell Schech Hamad. It was built and utilised during the Neo-Babylonian Period (626–539 BCE), and eventually destroyed by fire.
We created a 3D model of the re-plastered remains of the “Red House” in order to gain a visual impression of the project’s possible outcome regarding the heights of its walls etc. Additionally, the visualisations were used to present the project to potential sponsors.

#500CharAbstracts: 🏺 @ArchaeoBasti & H. Franzmeier show, how to get from excavation data to a #3DReconstruction for an exhibition. They showcase the visualisation with the example of Pi-Ramesse in #Egypt, capital of Ramesses II. This case is especially interesting as the remains of the city are not visible any more. Special strategies were needed to create an aesthetically and educationally sound solution.

🏺 Tepe Gawra, kurdish for “the great mound”, is situated in #Iraq. The site offers an almost continuous sequence of occupation from the 5th to the 2nd millennium BCE. The “Round House” itself dates to around 4000 BCE.

Our architectural reconstruction is based upon analyses, the excavation reports, and related literature. Since the reconstruction is, of course, only tentative, we decided to illustrate the level of certainty in the model through colour coding.
