ICYMI: 🏺 Can a museum really forbid scanning their objects if they are presented publicly? A 2022 article by The Guardian presents us with a case between the Institute of Digital Archaeology against the British Museum. Is this a question about ownership?

🏺 Heron of Alexandria (c. 10-70 CE) was a Greek-Egyptian mathematician and inventor. He lived in Roman Egypt and was a representative of Hellenistic Science. One of his inventions were automatically opening temple doors, powered by a fire altar and hydraulics.

The automated temple doors are described in his writings as invention “number 37”. The idea was, that temple doors should open automatically when a fire is lit and close again, when the fire distinguishes.

🏺 The probably three-storey ziggurat was surrounded by a complex system of walls and courts, which separated the holy district from the rest of the city. Archaeological records document various installations. Texts inform us that various activities were conducted in different courtyards.
In an extensive process, a range of secondary sources were consulted to create an image of over 4000 years ago. Over 4000 human models and 300 buildings were used in this view.

🏺 4,6 million people watched an archaeologist argue against a pseudo-archaeologist for over four hours.
@FlintDibble was a guest at the Joe Rogan Experience and debated Graham Hancock, creator of the Netflix show “Ancient Apocalypse”.
The debate was heated, but also an example of why communication with “alternative archaeologies” is so difficult. Here are my thoughts…

ICYMI; A while ago I predicted, that the movie “Eternals” will be a colonialist disaster, but maybe at least entertaining. While I was right with the first prediction, I was wrong with the latter. It is a disaster, but not even entertaining.
In this post, I review the film and why I think it sets a bad example for showing the past in modern media.

Qantir/Pi-Ramesse (House of Ramses) is situated in the Nile-Delta of Egypt, about 120 km northeast of Cairo. The city was founded by Ramesses II. in the 13th century BCE. A nearly 7-minute animation and several still images could be created during a time-span of nine months. Especially the visualisation of the horse stables was of upmost importance, as these were excavated quiet well. Besides that, the urban structure of the city was visualised very carefully.

Mari, modern Tell Hariri, located in Syria is one of the most famous sites in West Asia, and dates from the 3rd to the beginning of the 2nd millennium BCE. The excavations at the Massif Rouge, a massive red-bricked terrasse, offers a very complicated excavation and research history.
We created a detailed model of the area by hand. This form of documentation-based reconstruction was the only way to create a 3D model out of the old and new excavation data.

🏺 The Stone Building (Steingebäude) of Uruk is a semi-subterranean building made of stone, that comprises of three rectangle rooms, that are nested in each other. The access was made trough a ramp leading down from the surface level. The inner floor was paved with stone slabs.
The function might be a grave. It is also unclear, if the building was only sub-terranean and had a flat or no roof at all, or if a super-structure was standing above the Stone Building.

The reconstruction of the Great Hall in Karakorum was visualised with an animation to be able to explain the complicated composition of the terrace as well as the ‘Great Hall’, that shows influences of Chinese and Tibetan architecture.

Especially the accurate realisation of the archaeological documented results was important to us. The animation is displayed in a nearby museum. Therefore, the translation of the explaining texts into Mongolian is self-explanatory.

We scientifically reconstructed and visualised the Riemchen-Building. Is was constructed subterranean and was only looking out of the sourounding area. It is assumed, that the building was only accessible through the roof with the help of a ladder.

The building is interesting, because inside the sourounding corridor and central room were a lot of objects found. The function of the building is not clear, but it is possible, that it was a grave of some sort.
