My last DAP is a Sony A35 with a firmware mod and with the unlocked amplifier flag but I rarely use it these days. Make no mistake that thing sounds wonderful and I actually use it on my desktop rig everytime I want to play meme high resolution songs. The modded firmware also lets me use it as a Bluetooth receiver/DAC, but I rarely do it. With that out of the way, I think a DAP is only worth it if you have IEMs or headphones that can take the full potential from it. Imo usually stuff way above 300USD. If you listen to music from streaming services (lossless or not) just take the money you would spend on the DAP and buy a better smartphone that can be used with a simple passive USB C to 3.5mm adaptor, or if you enjoy dongles get a simple DAC. So my answer is not worth it unless you have really great IEMs. (Edit for grammar)

Finally upgraded a €180 Thinkpad T480 (lemmy.world)

Bought it used (but literally like new, not even a scratch) for €180 and then slapped on it 2x32GB RAM sticks (Patriot, DDR4 3200Mhz, €68 for the two sticks), a 1TB M.2 2280 (WD_BLUE SN570, €54) and a used Intel AX200 Wi-Fi card (€15) for a total of €317 for the laptop + the upgrades (+ this dock as the seller included...

Oh my! I’m sure most of us didn’t know this isn’t Reddit…Thank you for the impressive, useful and most informative comment which imagine that, is actually very Reddit like. 🤭

Artemis,
@Artemis@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Great buy and upgrades, btw what is the model number of the RAM sticks? It’s actually useful if someone needs to buy compatible RAM.

Artemis,
@Artemis@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Much appreciated! I’m sure those details might help someone in the future.

My dad is recovering from cancer and it was a hard fight, I sincerely wish the best for Stallman.

What's this design on my T450's back called? Googling "thinkpad t450 back" doesnt give any similar results. (thelemmy.club)

It looks like a typical thinkpad rubber back, but with the x1’s “carbon fiber” design cutting through it with a wide diagonal line. Google only gives standard rubber backs. Anyone have any idea what this version of the design is called?

Artemis,
@Artemis@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

This looks like custom made, I would like to see details on the corners of the Thinkpad lid, mostly curious. Lovely design imo.

Artemis,
@Artemis@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Btw regarding the design, closest term I know on a similar design is the “racing stripe”.

I seriously doubt sdf.org will defederate due to political, religious or other kind of views unless some kind of danger to its users is involved, and even then I’m pretty sure we would go to ARPA votes over it. While the instance might be recent the community behind sdf.org is ancient (I say this with my utmost respect for them ) so yea, not their first rodeo or last one. If you don’t like the views of those instances feel free to block them yourself. Best regards.

You all might not believe me but last year I knew someone who ran XP on his daily machine. It obviously didn’t work correctly with a bunch of things. I advised him to at least use a light Linux distro to access the internet, he didn’t care , and I didn’t push the subject anymore.

He was a curious and very nice lad, pretty much “stuck” in the early www days (including his online minset), totally into retro anime but current online security wasn’t in his agenda. 😖

Nothing against retro OSes, I have a old laptop with XP installed just for legacy stuff, but I don’t connect that thing directly to the internet.

Scattered is ok. More choice. Less moderation elitism. Anyway headphone communities were always scattered. Headwise, Head-Fi, SBAF, reddit, Discord. Survival of the stronger I guess. 🗡️

Imo they probably are due to Lenovo client support and warranty. Note this is taken from the experience of a pal of mine who actually owns a Framework laptop. His laptop has problems with the wi-fi and Framework pretty much didn’t try to help him find the cause, so just because you can repair it doesn’t mean it has better QC or support. (Also that pal of mine is a accomplished dev, so not your run of the mill normie, before someone says he doesn’t know about the hardware).

Take this with a grain of salt after all I’m just another anon, but before you buy a Framework be sure to search their official community on the main problems people face.

System76 should be a better option, they had stellar support, but no idea about it right now.

Also I love the concept behind framework I really do. I’m all for right to repair, but client support is part of it, so yeah I can’t recommend a company my pal had problems with. 🎩

I don’t have a tech background, currently doing museum security, that’s all. Super enjoyable work. This community is nice, I only lurked in reddit.

Artemis,
@Artemis@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Gotta admit I commented more in a few days here, than I ever did in years of reddit, but yeah mostly lurking.

Former but I’m sure always one at heart. 🎩 Museum security is probably one of the best places I ever got on my job, before I did [redacted] security… [Redacted], and praying to lord that shit wouldn’t hit the fan on my shift. 😖 I seriously love my job rn. It’s slow when there are no schools, I get to actually learn a lot on the job (because tours) and polish my English while getting paid. 😉 Anyway have my utmost best regards. 🎩 Edit: Redacted some stuff for privacy sake.
