Reflections on Xenoblade Chronicles

Xenoblade Chronicles has been one of the broadly popular JRPG series as of late, particularly within my own social circles. I have heard mostly good things about the games, and some vocal criticisms about the second game in particular. After finally picking up a Switch last year, I have now made my way through most of the...

Ashtear,

For me it’s the space exploration. Could take or leave the bullet hell stuff.

Ashtear,

Yep. I’m on lemm.ee and I don’t even think about what content I might be missing.

Ashtear,

Ugh, that pull quote.

Even in our press guides, we were not to say anything about Alex’s sexuality, period, at all.

Considering the response to the first game and its prequel, I don’t know who the hell SQEX Europe thought their audience was.

Is it me or does reddit feel, weird?

So I checked out reddit after a long time and was going through the top of r/videogames subreddit and I could clearly see a pattern in most of the posts there. Posts were mostly like “what game ______ for you?” or “what game _____ like this?” Now I could be wrong but it doesn’t feel ‘organic’ (if that’s correct...

Ashtear,

Yeah, there’s a reason why Youtube thumbnails have all that weird shit. It works.

I saw a recent post that 60% of playtime in 2023 was spent on games 6 years or older. What 6+ year old games are you playing?

I haven’t stopped playing Overwatch since it came out, still getting on with friends 2 or 3 nights a week and putting in a few hours (and I’m still awful lol). I also still log on to Battlefield 1943 from time to time to get in a few matches....

Ashtear,

I’m still trying to get my Warcraft partner to try Guild Wars 2. I had so much fun in it a while back.

Ashtear,

I just got there and it’s totally stopped the main story.

Ashtear,

My retro favorites are Rikku (especially in FFX-2) and Celes from FF6. Rikku’s the type to light up a room, and it turns out I have a thing for quirky, techie girls from persecuted minority groups which would later come up with Tali’zorah in Mass Effect. Of course, Rikku’s more daughter goals than girlfriend goals now that I’m older. Awkward.

With Celes, there have been better, deeper portrayals of depression in RPGs since, but back in the 90’s I really appreciated seeing a character that isn’t boundlessly confident and has trauma to work through. Love her story.

I also really liked Aranea from FF15. Still feeling robbed that we never got her DLC.

Ashtear,

Last week I finished Xenoblade Chronicles 3’s DLC (finished the base game recently, too). Not my favorite RPGs, but I found a number of things to like.

Now I’m trying Yakuza 0 again. I think I’m a little more than halfway through it? Feels like it’s not a good sign that I’m way more interested in playing shogi or messing around with the real estate minigame than the combat. I put it on Easy and am not gonna worry about it. The cutscenes are phenomenal, though. In any case, good chance I’m just skipping ahead to Like a Dragon 7 after I’m done with this one.

Ashtear,

I mean, I could see how getting a game with big robots and a tagline of “Stand tall and shake the heavens” on the cover invites mockery 😂 I actually did a replay of Xenogears last year just before my XC2 play and was really glad to see the story still holds up, even if the English script could use a revision. I even liked the infamous Disc 2 a lot more this time around. The gameplay is still the gameplay, though, warts and all. Still one of my all-time favorites regardless, and freshening it up in my memory might have enhanced my XC3 experience.

I’d say you could start with either XC1 or 2, in case you bounce off one and don’t want to continue to write off the trilogy. I don’t think starting with XC3 is a good idea. A player new to the trilogy would probably miss a lot without having played the previous two.

Ashtear,

Hah, I don’t know if it’s so much deep conversation as just something I personally connected with. 10 hours might be enough time to know if you’re into her character or not.

Ashtear,

I rarely shop Best Buy as it is so it’s not like avoiding them in the future is difficult for me, but I fear that a lot of big corps have something like this tucked away somewhere.

Ashtear,

Part of the concern is deceptive/astroturfed content developed as advertising showing up in Lemmy communities. While those same actors could theoretically be based on lemm.ee, that’s a lot more work than simply scaling up operations when you’re doing it on Threads anyway.

Ashtear,

You and me both! Glad you wrote this up, it’s got me counting the days.

Ashtear,

I don’t know what’s going on with this headline; it’s not an awards show, just a showcase. Although I understand how events like The Game Awards blur the line between the two.

Makes me feel like Game News Season (or whatever we’re calling it post-E3) is coming up quick.
