Ashtear,

I always found the Dreamcast to be notable for being the first console to have polished 3D graphics. I don’t consider it part of the fifth generation because I believe those consoles went a generation too early for 3D gaming, at least to the degree their game developers did. The difference between your typical PSX game running at 15 FPS with claustrophobic draw distances and SoulCalibur (or any halfway-decent PC offering of the time) was night and day. You’ll hear cynical, lazy narratives about piracy, but that kind of thing was always on the margins in the 90’s. It was the rapidly-moving market that would be the problem for Sega in the end, as PS2 and Xbox represented yet another big step forward for nascent 3D technology.

The thing is, despite running up against the best-selling console ever made, the opportunity was still there for the Dreamcast. Sega bungled their Japan release but had a far better than expected showing in North America, led by a strong launch lineup and an untapped market filled by the 2K sports games. The Dreamcast is a great case study in the necessity of agile marketing; immediately pivoting towards a stronger Western footing after the successful 1999 launch would have put Sega in the position to capitalize on future success. The PS2 had supply issues and a thin library in its early years. Sega also had the foresight to put modems on their consoles, and Phantasy Star Online would go on to be one of the best selling games on the system. The US had better Internet infrastructure and adoption than Japan, and the lack of online service was the one weakness the PS2 had. Sega being positioned to compete with Xbox Live would have dramatically altered the market landscape. Instead, Sega only had one major online title in the end, but even that would come too late. When Shenmue flopped (due to major budget overruns), that was that. The Dreamcast library had peaked, and higher-ups at Sega were already moving to pull the plug.

Ashtear,

It’s all sheer greed, too. Paradox has fully embraced the model of releasing sequels with less content than their DLC-enhanced previous games after 2K showed the market had tolerance for it with Civilization. Considering how that already puts them ahead of the curve, it’s amazing that Paradox let this game come out in this state.

Ashtear,

Not old enough, heh. The cartridges/CDs this commenter are talking about had to have rock-solid code because patching wasn’t possible. You’d have to make an entire new print run, and very few games of that era ever had those.

Ashtear,

The one thing I wish I knew at the start is that regular armor/clothing bonuses don’t apply when in power armor. Unfortunately, that’s the bulk of what you’ll find from legendary enemies, so it makes loot a lot less fun. Power armor with legendary bonuses is very rare. There are many viable builds without power armor, but they are likely to be challenging for a new player.

Also if anyone knows of a mod that makes recon scopes reliable (I swear I can’t mark anything with just a damn twig in the way), or if they’ve recently patched that, I’d love to hear about it.

Ashtear,

Sometimes we get immediate benefits. It took a while for capitalism to take over the Internet.

Games that still need more patience: what games released a year ago (or older) are you waiting for a sale on? Or that need another patch?

Other than a slew of Nintendo titles that maybe hopefully will come down in price (the patient gamers’ bane), I have my eye on the next time Divinity: Original Sin 2 goes on sale. A friend who never plays anything other than WoW loved playing Larian’s newest with me and I’m trying to get her to pick this up. Pretty sure...

Ashtear,

I managed to get Wonder from my library a couple weeks ago (put in for it at release, to give you an idea of how long that took). Delightful game, wish I had longer checkout period.

But yeah, can still expect to pay quite a bit for Super Mario Odyssey even now.

Ashtear,

Ah, a NISA series. Not quite as slow a publisher as Nintendo for pricing but still difficult for patient gaming.

I remember when they raised the price of Ys VIII well after release.

Ashtear,

Edit: Didn’t see the “year ago or older” caveat in the title.

I think most didn’t 😅 Was trying to keep it fully on-topic, but I guess it’s still mostly on-topic.

Subset Games created two amazing games: FTL & Into The Breach

I’m not sure if this counts as a “patient gamer” because I played them to death years ago…but I’ve been playing both again recently and they’re just perfect little games with a ton of replayability. They’re not retro (FTL 2012, ITB 2018) but they’re old enough to regularly go on sale which is great!...

Ashtear,

I think FTL might have been my overall favorite game of the 2010’s. Anything with a space setting can immediately get my attention, but I think it also managed to be just the kind of roguelite gameplay I love, too.

Fights in Tight Spaces and Nitro Kid are the closest I’ve seen to Into the Breach’s puzzly/must-think-ahead style. Both are card-based battlers, though.

Ashtear,

This is April’s game of the month for a Discord server I’m on, so a few of us have been tinkering with it recently. I was surprised at how good analog control felt with it.

So cool to see a bunch of praise for this game here! It’s one of my favorite Zeldas and it’s always seemed like it never got a lot of talk.

Ashtear,

First one that comes to mind was getting a used PS3 for $75 in late 2017.

I’d become a big Persona fan after liking P3 and with P4 becoming an all-time favorite soon after, but I’m mostly a PC gamer. I don’t always pick up current-gen consoles. Eventually I got sick of hearing the heaps of praise for P5 that I figured I’d take the risk on a used PS3 (getting a PS4 was way out of my budget). That’s not why it ended up being a great deal, though.

Now that I had a PS3, I figured I’d try all the games I’d been missing out on that didn’t have PC ports. I had a remarkably high hit rate with these: Demon’s Souls, Dragon Quest Builders, Journey, The Last of Us, NieR, and of course Persona 5 itself. Ended up playing through (almost) all of FromSoft’s following games and NieR: Automata because of this pickup. Still never got that PS4, though, so I’m still waiting on Bloodborne and TLOU2.

How to revitalize this sub?

I love the original patientgamers subreddit so I was stoked to find this community. And because lemmy seems to have a more knowledgeable crowd any topic I posted here had great engagement and discussions, despite the small community. I am too busy to be a mod but maybe I can help by sparking this discussion: what would be needed...

Ashtear,

In my experience, having a weekly sticky like that is essential for engagement. There are plenty of people here, they just aren’t making threads. If you get people in the habit of dropping by once a week, they are more likely to post.

I’d also make the suggestion to scale the rule back to 6 months from 12. It’s a good idea in general for a slow community and there were multiple big games that came out in that month 7 through 12 time period. Can always change it back when the community is active. /r/patientgamers was 6 months until semi-recently.

That said, this doesn’t have to be a carbon copy of the subreddit. I liked the Meme Monday suggestion that was posed. Anything to drive engagement.

Ashtear,

I think it’s lower pressure to post comments in those threads, too. People like to talk about what they are playing, but sometimes they only have the time/effort for a sentence or two.

Ashtear,

Went back to college last year and Joplin’s been amazing. More off-topic, but the only thing I wish it had was better search result organization.

Ashtear,

I had a lot of fun with Cobalt Core. Much more lighthearted; great soundtrack too.

Ashtear,

I sold a copy of Golden Sun to Venus Williams once.

Ashtear,

Interesting find!

Reading between the lines with this and other interviews, it sounds like this game went through a bit of development hell (started as a Vita game!) and the team was relieved to get it out the door and move on to the next project.

I hadn’t considered this being Vanillaware’s first simultaneous worldwide, multi-platform release. That’s probably something the studio had to scale up to tackle, so I could see PC being a step too far (setting aside the fact that outsourcing was always an option).

Ashtear,

Insta-wishlisted. Combat footage starts at 1:12 on the Steam page trailer.

Ashtear,

How has this been? I mostly enjoyed the first Darkest Dungeon but ended up passing on this one because I heard from a bunch of people that it lost a lot of the magic of the original.

Ashtear,

Yeah, that’s the hope. Thanks!

Ashtear,

I don’t know about new IP even. When I saw the list, I found it a bit jarring to see Prince of Persia and Castlevania in an indie showcase.

Ashtear,

Yeah, the new TV series is making me think there would be some good possibilities for novels.

Ashtear,

Kind of a cheating answer: Lost Odyssey. Sakaguchi brought on a novelist for the game, and a big chunk of it is already in novel form. It’s great stuff, too. Easily the highlights of the game for me.
