I can't be the only one who thinks the pokemon stuff here is silly right?

Ok, yes, the designs are similar, no denying that, but if "similar" is legally defensible, we've got so many problems all throughout our society and not a single piece of media is safe.

So I picked up the C&C Ultimate Collection that EA put out on steam this weekend.

First thing I notice is missions just want you to throw numbers at everything. As long as you've got more X than they do, you're good to go. No strategy necessary.

And it's fun, don't get me wrong, but it leaves me wondering: Has a strategy game ever asked you to treat the lives of soldiers as valuable? Or is disposability built into the RTS formula?

Ok, netflix , I was going to give you a fair chance but I'm 15 minutes in and aang just flew off to get a little moment to himself when the fire nation attacks.

Aang running away from his responsibilities is THE ENTIRE BASIS OF HIS CHARACTER ARC!! You can't just change that! That informs literally every moment of meaningful growth in the series! It's the cornerstone of the entire fucking plot, YOU CAN'T JUST CHANGE THAT!

I love how every time I see something like this I'll say to myself "I bet it's not what they're claiming" and immediately I'm vindicated by seeing the world's worst definition of "strategy" being used as the metric.....

and if you're studying games that demand "longer time horizons" then what you're studying isn't game design preferences, it's free time.

I mean look at our modern strategy games. We've got 4X and...... what else? Tactics/Fire Emblem games?

They're both extremely niche. We haven't seen a good, quick strategy game in over a decade, to my memory. Tooth and Tail, maybe?

Of course people are gunna be less interested in the style when their options are nonexistent!

truly I am so tired of "the kids just can't pay attention these days!"

There's a reason. We're enforcing this on them with our social structure design.

Ok, mastodon logistics question:

I have no idea if anyone I care about is on threads. Is there any way to find out? I don't even know if I should care about all this that's happening.

Reading this is insane. Engine woes causing delays in production, the team noting that schedules and technical features are unreasonable, and then a C-level offering the statement that "New IPs are one of the hardest things to do" as the reason for canceling.

I am now angry at storytellers everywhere because I've been studying the of children's shows and seeing the same patterns of quality we see in auteur cinema.

Bluey is as good at telling a story as Scorsese ever was. Sesame Street is as thoughtful as Kubrick.

You know what I love? Running my sensitive tax data through a system which doesn't understand what I'm saying, and doesn't understand what IT'S saying, and only creates something which looks correct at a glance.

What a great thing to make!

What games have modelled unusual systems for you that have given you a better understanding of a political, cultural or emotional dynamic? I'm really geeking out about Internal Family Systems therapy these days and I'm excited about the possibility of seeing these ideas in a game.

BaldSavant,
@BaldSavant@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@jimmunroe I've found that almost all games tend to model these things, just indirectly. I've been paying particular attention to TTRPG design lately, cause they tend to model some kind of roleplay and you can learn so much about a designers worldview by looking at what stats are available, and what actions are incentivized. Especially if you look through the lens of something like internal family systems.

Words mean things. This is unquestionable, incontrovertible, uncontroversial. Words mean things, or whatโ€™s the point in having words? They may mean different things in different languages, but when people are speaking the same language, they should be able to comfortably assume theyโ€™re understanding one another. That the words they use, identical and clear, should mean the same things.

Been thinking a lot about layered narratives lately, and then I stumble across this video on layering puzzles and interactions into your scenes for D&D:
