CTDummy,

We learnt this stuff as kids. Not even from the US but grew up on farm. Well before we were ever trusted to touch a rifle we were told time and time again these stories about brothers (or friends) playing with a gun, one of them points the gun at the other and pulls the trigger; killing the brother/friend.

It’s not on the kid(s), it’s on the responsible adult. If you have firearms around, even if they’re not intended to be used by everyone, everyone in proximity to them should be taught gun safety and the firearm stored securely.

I mean, you’re travelling internationally, check your damn bag. You think if a couple of Turkish dudes got caught with ammo in their luggage they’d do great in the states? Don’t like getting in trouble overseas? Don’t break the laws overseas.

I think getting smacked with a cane for smoking weed is dumb. Still won’t catch me with weed in Singapore though. Best believe I triple checked my bags when I left Europe too.

My point is being ignorant is insufficient a defence for these type of offences. My opinion of whether they “deserve” it isn’t really relevant. The law is the law. If I get fucked up and drove; I could claim it was a stupid mistake and no one was harmed if I got pulled over and arrested. That doesn’t really matter and isn’t why it’s a law. I believe they should be charged and given lighter sentences and/or the US should apply for clemency on their behalf but my point remains it’s the discretion of local law enforcement.

CTDummy,

Well you neither said this, and it was in response to someone explaining that they shouldnt be punished because it was an accident and thus a victimless crime.

It’s implied with my previous remarks. It being an accident/mistake is synonymous with pleading ignorance in this instance.

Of course it is up to local law enforcement. I’ve seen no one argue or suggest otherwise.

People saying it’s harmless or a simple mistake are actively undermining local law enforcement whether they know it or not. I’ve seen this countless times before. People get charged with crimes overseas, some that perhaps they wouldn’t at home. Then rather it being a simple matter of if said person did what they’re accused of doing it becomes “oh this countries law are ridiculous, this person simply didn’t know, local law enforcement is corrupt” and so on. Whatever it takes to remove accountability of the person and blame the host country or its law enforcement either directly or indirectly.

I guess what I’m arguing is if you can’t check your bags, read a foreign travel advisory or even pay attention to intercom announcements while you touch down; don’t come crying foul play to the consulate with your drug charge expecting to get a clemency plea. Just to be oddly specific.

CTDummy,

Hungry Jacks (upside down Burger King) used to sell those types of veggie burgers. They were super unimpressive since they felt more like a “just give them an option” thing rather than something meant to be enjoyable. I’d be surprised if they didn’t just copy another Burger King menu item.

As an aside, I feel like one of the few people that enjoy the impossible burgers. I’d buy em all the time if not for the price. Which as an Omni, seems like they’re doing their job then.

CTDummy,

“behavioral finance” code word for psychological manipulation

Funnily enough that’s exactly how I interpret “former monetisation manager at Meta” as well.

Care to elaborate? Who is violating the Budapest accords memorandum in your view?

CTDummy,

The reason I ask is it’s common Russian disinformation to claim US or NATO violated this agreement; justifying the Russian federations invasion of Ukraine.

CTDummy,

Is this memes referencing these types of gimps? Because yes I am afraid of advance warfare gimps.

CTDummy,

In my defence the mobile app for me compresses the image. Legit didn’t even see Wallace or Butch. Zoomers at work reference Pulp fiction all the time, have faith.

CTDummy,

"objectively interested in maintaining our lead in efforts to establish a more fair and democratic world order.”

China or Russia

Lmao

CTDummy,

What a response from a government lmao.

“Hey this is fucked and we want you to step in and do something about this.”

“Unfortunately we are currently doing nothing about this. That’ll be anywhere from $80-100k+ per year per politician, thanks.”

CTDummy,

The point I’m trying to make is obviously there are no laws for it currently. That’s why a petition gathered enough signatures to warrant a response. “There’s currently no requirement” feels like a non-answer. That and the department then goes on to run defence for these corporations citing cost; indicating a misunderstanding of the movement. For sure agree that this is just the start and to keep going though.

CTDummy,

All for protests but people camping out on uni grounds? Hard pass.

CTDummy,

Clever but as in “I don’t pay several thousand per unit and hundred in fees to have random people take over parts of the campus”. Have an area on campus and whatever but clear out over night.

CTDummy,

Well the universities seem to agree so too bad.

CTDummy,

Why even bother replying after 24 hours if it’s just going to be another childish attempt to insult/bait an emotional reaction? Your behaviour and the behaviour of “activist” defacing property is entirely reminiscent of why I have this view.

Spare me. No amount of insults will stop me supporting the ideals of the protest or resulting me flipping out in a racial/political tirade. Which I have to assume you’re hoping for to justify your snark since you can’t seem to devise any form of coherent discourse otherwise.

CTDummy,

Yes, that was clearly my issue, that your ad hominem insult weren’t prompt enough. I expect further insults to be real time.

As opposed to your “no”, clearly you entered this discussion in all good faith and very much interested why I have the view that I do.

University of Queensland will involve police and take disciplinary action against pro-Palestine student protesters after their conduct on campus allegedly resulted in assault and property damage.

Peaceful except when they aren’t (which let’s be honest isn’t too frequently in the country fortunately). I don’t need to be yelled at by idiots who I already largely agree with. If they were pro Israel protesters or conservative activist camping out on grounds my opinions would be far worse.

CTDummy,

Man with face tattoos doesn’t make great life decisions. Weather at six.

The bear scenario is the perfect division inducing shitstorm.

It’s understandable what the memes portrays the danger that women face, daily. The fact that they frequently don’t feel comfortable or even just basic safety is definitely valid and worth discussion.

However, the bear vs man thing was just the worst vehicle to induce that discussion. On one side men who may not be the most well informed about women issues; will get immediately defensive at being compared to a large animal known for tearing people apart and eating them alive.

The members of the other side who see all the angry men getting defensive at them for expressing this view and think it’s purely because they aren’t empathetic to these issue, they “hate” women or they’re marginalising what is a real and daily danger.

Of course there are actual trolls, toxic arseholes and people who have 0 interest actual discourse or understanding but fuck them, I agree ban em.

It was never going to end in a productive, calm or rational discussion and frankly I think tarring the entire of lemmy for it is equally as unproductive. I’ve seen plenty of people initially aggressive to the meme, come around. I’ve seen more and more people make light jokes about the same meme without the accusatory tone. If you want discourse theres space to do so; it just has to be done better(imo). Preferably without snark or accusatory tones.

CTDummy,

Sure. However, the two aren’t unrelated. Not that it justifies the harassment you’ve seen (which as mentioned mods are pretty solid on most instances but reports help them a lot). Given what shitshow it turned into it’s clear that more conversations around the topic are needed. I think those type of people will still pop their head up. When they do, if the entire conversation isn’t already a shitfight because of how it was initiated, these type will be easier to identify and ban. Focusing solely on the outcome and ignoring how we got here only ensures it will be repeated. Lemmy is growing still, there will be challenges on the way.

CTDummy,

Same, once I blocked it and hexbear lemmy went back to being a better version of reddit again. Substantially less shitpost and bad faith baiting.

CTDummy,

I signed up before I understood lemmy. I was considering bitching to the fediverse community about it. It’s pretty unintuitive how this all works to an outsider. Given beehaws philosophy I was considering migrating there because of this thread tbh. I will consider it tho cheers.

CTDummy,

That’s actually a great suggestion. I thought of it as “I need to pick a new home to move to” but looks super simple on voyager to switch between accounts. I technically still have my kbin with the same user (and also see kbin in the modlog a lot lol). Thanks for the tips and suggestions!!

CTDummy,

Jesus that took me down a rabbit hole. I’ll likely see you in the new site/hopefully lemmy gets forked. What a disappointment the devs turned out to be.
