Helicopter carrying Iran's President Raisi crashes, search under way (www.reuters.com)

DUBAI, May 19 (Reuters) - A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his foreign minister crashed on Sunday as it was crossing mountain terrain in heavy fog, an Iranian official told Reuters, and rescuers were struggling to reach the site of the incident....

CanadaPlus, (edited )

Or just really difficult terrain, give that it’s foggy so you can’t just look for smoke.

CanadaPlus, (edited )

Hopefully not. Helicopters legitimately do just crash a lot in foggy conditions, and rugged terrain doesn’t help.

If it was Israel, they did a very good job picking a moment Raisi was somewhat likely to die anyway.

CanadaPlus,

No offense, but with nothing else provided I believe the IMF more about matters of global economy.

CanadaPlus,

Damn, I never get invited to the cool parties. /s

CanadaPlus,

And then (at least) molested the people they arrested.

CanadaPlus,

Why not both? A responsible military thinker just treats it as a trolley problem.

Zelensky: 'Our partners fear that Russia will lose this war' (kyivindependent.com)

President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that Ukraine’s partners “are afraid of Russia losing the war” and would like Kyiv “to win in such a way that Russia does not lose,” Zelensky said in a meeting with journalists attended by the Kyiv Independent....

CanadaPlus,

It’s true, and they’re not wrong, nuclear Yugoslavia would be scary. Unfortunately I don’t think there’s an alternative, Putin rang a bell that can’t be un-rung.

CanadaPlus,

There’s also concern about how much aid they can politically muster, long term. Really, that and an eventual shortage of Ukrainian troops are the main concerns.

CanadaPlus, (edited )

Probably a broader umbrella of bad stuff. If Putin goes, there’s no real successors, so it’s kind of anyone’s game to be the next dictator, and chaos potential is very high. This is actually by design, as a form of coup-proofing.

It might not be MAD, and in fact probably won’t be directly, but massive proliferation? Sure, lots of people would trade a lot of guns for a nuke. One of the splinter states invading NATO directly? Could also happen. Russian oil and gas going off the market really fast, and putting Europe in a tough spot? Almost certain, at least to some degree. And then at the end of it, who knows what the map of Eurasia looks like.

When they say unpredictable, they mean unpredictable, and they have great reason to be wary of unpredictability.

CanadaPlus,

Rope braiding is pretty fast. Especially if you’re an ancient Egyptian woman who’s done it full time for decades. They had hemp, which is the same stuff that rigged up the giant sailing ships of later on in history.

CanadaPlus,

Well, what else are you supposed to do when you’re overlord of the only empire in the known world? Something for the peasants? /s

Yeah, sorry, that was just a nitpick. All the rest I agree with.

CanadaPlus,

Armchair activism is indeed a scourge.

CanadaPlus,

We know more about pyramid construction than pretty much everything else that was going on in 2500BC.

Sticky trick: new glue spray kills plant pests without chemicals (www.theguardian.com)

The insect glue, produced from edible oils, was inspired by plants such as sundews that use the strategy to capture their prey. A key advantage of physical pesticides over toxic pesticides is that pests are highly unlikely to evolve resistance, as this would require them to develop much larger and stronger bodies, while bigger...

CanadaPlus,

How many oil plants to you have to mill up in order to have enough oil to coat a plant?

CanadaPlus,

Natural selection is usually implied. So, in long form, smaller insects would have to be less reproductively successful, and that’s hard when you’re a pest that really benefits from being tiny, stealthy and energy-economical.

CanadaPlus, (edited )

35%, even. It’s more like 20% today, for comparison.

CanadaPlus, (edited )

Also, it’s China, so higher than normal chance they made it the fuck up. Research ethics is a bit of a problem in the region.

That being said, it’s not a surprising result. Usually small pieces of tissue can be frozen without problem.

CanadaPlus, (edited )

A lot of people don’t realise, we can and did. In the 50’s. It just works on small creatures.

Unfortunately, like you said, cooling is really hard to do quickly in bulk, and no cute tricks have been forthcoming quite yet.

CanadaPlus, (edited )

Yep. It also causes a lot of social disorder and addiction. The argument for it is that people like it.

If it wasn’t clear from context, I meant socially or ethically.

CanadaPlus,

More than that. Gravity is weak; gravity-based technologies inevitably need insane amounts of material to work. This particular metric also involves shedding mass, y’know, like a rocket would have anyway.

Wasn’t this story posted already here? I don’t want to rehash if I don’t have to.

CanadaPlus,

I’ve tried to answer, but it’s tough because projecting geopolitics forward is always speculative. Why don’t you go now? Do you think democracy would be safe in that scenario? Is that important, in your opinion?

CanadaPlus, (edited )

In the long term, autocracy is a far greater threat to the comfort of our species. Pretty much any and all history before 250 years ago is depressing as hell, and if democracy dies that’s where we’re headed, but with far more powerful technology to abuse. Climate change will suck, but we’ll adapt, even if we make it so bad we have to abandon the tropics entirely.

CanadaPlus,

This is also pretty lightly compressed, though. If you’re trying to do mind uploads you can probably shave off orders of magnitude pretty easily, since in silico neurons don’t need any of the functional structures as long as they act the same way.

CanadaPlus,

No, I mean a high standard of living, according to what is possible at the time. Good homes, plenty of good food, easy transportation wherever you want to go in the country, etc.

I guarantee there’s more people who might like to travel than planes and fuel to move them. Expanding the sector requires a variety of inputs, which themselves are in shortage.

I can get you the older stuff sure, but it was written for a different audience. You’ll most likely do better with a starting point like this.

Please do. I did read through that page and a few other places on the website. It explains that it’s a new economic system, but not how it works.
