to the lieder by Alma Mahler, all 17 that have survived (of about 50 total) - a new recording by Elise Caluwaerts (soprano) and Marianna Shirinyan on a 1899 Steinway.

A quick reminder: in her first marriage, it was of course Gustav who was the truly horrible person.

I've got the CD reissue - it's brilliant!
@jazz

Casura,
@Casura@mstdn.social avatar

@markhhsp Yes, monthly, usually every 2nd Tuesday at 10 p.m. (central european time) - announcements in German, though, and alas not archived (it's a small community thing, no budget to pay legal fees for archiving/replay/streaming). Next one will be on September 12, after the summer break.

What are 'rip-off' degrees? Which university courses could be affected as Rishi Sunak pledges crackdown

Casura,

@magdelenehall Shouldn't they (we) rather crack down on degrees that churn out rip-offs such as Sunak? 🤔

Oh yes - I remember how teenage me sat in a long-gone record store and the lady running it (I was too young, but it was said all her customers were in love with her 😅 ) played that for me the first time. WHOAH! Then to find out those were merely his beginnings and starting to explore the rest of his discography.

I love many of them, too! Berlin 1969 is great (the "Lost Recordings" edition is much more complete, but the WDR Jazzline still has some more tunes, oddly) ... the album w/Rowles on Mainstream, "Live at Rosy's" on Resonance ... wish I'd had been around for any of those gigs!

to The Necks "Silent Night" - not exactly christmas music, mind me. By that time (rec. 1995) they'd found their formula mostly (see "White") but continued to experiment, field recordings, adding snippets of dialogue etc. creating a brooding film noir type of experience ("Black").

Today's random choice Mankunku Quartet and Yakhal' Inkomo 2021 Mr Bongo reissue. South African jazz classic. It's very good. I really enjoyed listening to this, not a bad track on it.

Casura,

@jojobroom Such a great album!

Anyone following @jazz ought to check it out!

Mr. Bongo has it on LP and CD:

I've got it on an old Gallo CD twofer, mail-ordered from ZA some 20 yrs ago (w/Chris Schilder's - now Ibrahim Khalil Shibab - "Spring", which has seen a 2nd pressing on Matsuli:

Bet you can tell I love south african jazz 🤩

The below is from late 2021 - after several months of listening to ECM chronologically (and buying dozens of more albums) and then following up with a re-listen to all the remaining Jarrett recordings on my shelves ... top favorites marked. (Not sure if Bordeaux gets **** or ****1/2, haven't given it many spins yet.)

All on CD, yes (and a few - including the complete "Hymns/Spheres" - on LP, usually then in both formats) ... got way too many of those 😜
