It could be, or it could be because of a change in the setup. Has anyone else noticed anything on other servers?

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Sorry, I should have mentioned that!

Yes, it does seem to require a hard refresh. Shift+refresh seems to do it on a PC. On a phone it might be trickier, but I had success holding down the refresh button on Firefox for Android.

Dave,

It does go green when you tick it though. I had assumed this was an intended change. You can mark it as read, and it doesn’t disappear straight away so you can undo it if you accidentally clicked that button.

The day the govt bans 9kg gas bottles is the day they ban BBQs, and I just can't see that happening.

Dave,

Thanks! What is the breaking change? I know the backend and frontend can't be combined with older versions (i.e. you have to update both at the same time), if that what you're referring to?

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Yes, for the front/backend connection. I'm just hoping there is no change needing us to rush to 0.18

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Yeah, definitely. But the lack of capcha and the fact there's a bug where a remote user can cause an admin account to be un-admined (locking admins out of those settings), well I'm definitely considering waiting for 0.18.1

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

The steps to reproduce don't seem to have been tested but the current theory is that if a user is federated to a server that has an admin with the same name, and then that user is banned, then it may cause the admin to be un-admined I guess due to an update that doesn't correctly distinguish the local and remote users.

Honestly, it's annoying but may not be a showstopper for upgrading to 0.18

You can fix it by changing the flag in the database, and it's not giving the admin permissions to another user which would be a big security problem.

This release has 46 contributors! Compared to the 17.4 release that had 3, or the 17.3 release that had 4. It's such a massive release, and with so many new users it has attracted many new devs!

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

I did not know that! Thanks for letting me know. I will make upgrading a priority, though we will probably need to turn on registration applications as the cloudflare bot detection doesn't seem to be working

Dave,

There was a technical reason. This version removes websockets, which has performance improvements and solves a lot of outstanding issues.

Unfortunately the current captcha relies on websockets. The option is actually still there, it just causes an error on the registration page, stops registration from showing, and still doesn’t actually show a captcha.

Long story short, it’s just broken rather than deliberately removed (though originally they planned on dropping it which is why no effort went into solving the issues.

I've done some through Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and it was good, highly recommended!

Sorry, I meant after this change. As I understand it, you can just write in the contract they are a contractor and now they are and they can't challenge it. No sick leave, no annual leave, you want a job? Take it or leave it.

Is there any way the Fediverse can collaborate to stop their takeover?

There is a movement to get Fediverse instances to agree to block Meta. I guess if everyone did this, the Fediverse would continue on and Meta would probably be fine building their own platform.

But Meta has something the rest of the Fediverse doesn't have: money. They can simply pay some carefully chosen instances to Fedirate with them (which might be what the secret conversations are about).

There will also likely be a bit of a fight between instances that do or don't Federate with Meta, some thinking it's good because of the new userbase and some thinking it's bad because of the Embrace, Extend, Extinguish thing. That alone will probably cause damage as well, possibly splitting the already small userbase into two factions.

Meta is making a twitter/mastodon-like site, so Lemmy might get to have a wait and see approach, but if Meta start changing (Extending) the ActivityPub protocol then the dozens of different platforms on the Fediverse will all have to decide whether to change too or no longer be able to Federate with anyone who does change.

One of the benefits of Facebook Federating with Mastodon is the users. Building a new platform is hard but if on day 1 you can already follow millions of others then this helps. But after a month thay probably won't be very important, so it will be interesting to see what they do next.

We've got an insulated house, heat it properly, ventilate it, but still see humidity levels of 70%+ in bed rooms. How to fix that?

We built a house 7 years ago and it's insulated and has double glazing. I've installed Home Assistant with temp sensors in the bed rooms and seeing 70%+ humidity levels. Temperature is always above 16c...

Though as I learnt from this thread, it's so much more complicated than just turning it on!

You threw me off by telling me in my other example that rhere would need to be a tie breaker for third. Why? Lets assume there are 190 seats. If we apportion by votes, doesn't this mean National get 50 seats, Labour gets 40 seats, and the 10 Legalise Marijuana parties get 10 seats each?

Let’s say there are 10 voters, and the election is only for parties. National has a list of potential MPs.

National:

  • Steve
  • Fred
  • Jim
  • Bob
  • Frank

Labour has put forward their candidates:

  • Susan
  • Mia
  • Tama
  • Oliver
  • Stevie

And then the Legalise Marijuana party saw a loophole, and so has registered a bunch of extra parties. Theirs looks like this:

LM1:

  • Jonathan

LM2:

  • Katie

LM3:

  • Sally

LM4:

  • Jimmy

LM5:

  • PJ

LM6:

  • Bobby

LM7:

  • Kelly

LM8:

  • Mary

LM9:

  • Jane

LM10:

  • Watson

Now our 10 voters come into the voting booth, and they see the list of options:

  • National
  • Labour
  • LM1
  • LM2
  • LM3
  • LM4
  • LM5
  • LM6
  • LM7
  • LM8
  • LM9
  • LM10

5 voters want to vote for National, so they only vote for National. They are all against legalising marijuana and don’t like Labour’s policies so they don’t vote for anyone else.

4 voters want to vote for Labour, so they do. They are also all against legalising marijuana and don’t like National’s policies so they don’t vote for anyone else.

1 voter wants to vote for the Legalise Marijuana party. The party has told them how they can vote for all 10 of their subsidiaries, so they do this.

Now we add up the votes.

5 for National 4 for Labour 10 for Legalise Marijuana subsidiary parties

The Legalise Marijuana party now has 52% of the seats and so can pass their law, but only 1 out of 10 voters actually voted for them.

You say this is fair because they all had the same number of potential votes. I say it’s unfair because 10% of votes got 52% of seats

Honestly at this point there is no sense in continuing this conversation because you just willfully misunderstand what is being said.

I'm sorry, you seemed willing to explain and I genuinely do not understand why my concerns aren't valid (though you have certainly done your best to try to explain it so thank you for that). I suspect I may just not really get it, but the approval voting wikipedia page just assumes it's only used for picking a top candidate so doesn't help at all. I even tried getting chatGPT to explain it to me but it told me:

Seat allocation in parliamentary systems is usually determined by a variety of methods, including party-list proportional representation, mixed-member proportional representation, or single-member districts. These systems take into account the overall share of votes a party receives and aim to allocate seats in a way that reflects the proportionality of the vote.

Approval voting, on the other hand, does not directly account for the proportionality of votes. It focuses on identifying the candidate with the most approvals without considering the order of preferences or the relative strength of support for different parties. As a result, using approval voting for seat allocation in a Parliament may not adequately reflect the diversity of voter preferences or the proportionality of votes received by different parties.

I apologise if you got the impression I was faking stupidity, I assure you it's genuine.

One day, maybe. But that day will probably be when Lemmy as a platform can handle it a bit nicer.

Ultimately we have less than 100 users who have been active in the last week (admittedly not counting users from other instances). There is no way that having more communities is good for the instance. We just don't have the population to support it.

There are many instances that do let users create communities. So there are already several !technology communities, even several !newzealand communities (though ours is the most active). If you don't like the !technology communities on one instance, there are already plenty to choose from.

P.S. there are at least 3 NZ instances, this one, no.lastname.nz, and feddit.nz
