The five people aboard a missing submersible died in a "catastrophic" event, a Coast Guard official says, bringing a grim end to the massive search for the vessel that was lost during a voyage to the Titanic....
Yeah you'd hope so. But because it wasn't found until well after they ran out of air, it's not really certain that the implosion happened after running out of air.
In terms of dying, hypoxia isn't the worst thing either. I'd prefer that to many others.
Thanks! I had been following but until now hadn't seen a release date. I've been testing a few of the release candidates.
It's a little concerning the captcha pull request hasn't been merged. I'm assuming 0.18 still doesn't have a sign up captcha. We may need to enable either sign up applications or email verification otherwise we will have a bot problem (we've already seen this to some extent).
I hear that plastic bags are soon to be banned? How will that affect you? I've already thought about rubbish bags and bin liners and I don't know what the alternative will be yet. If they replace plastic rubber bags with those thick paper ones what is to stop people hiding a plastic bag inside of it? How will it be policed? Will...
Long-term we need something better than plastic for silage wrap.
The problem is you need something that will not break down. Maybe the solution is to eeplace silage rather than the wrapping. Perhaps you use something that only breaks down in commercial composting, but silage can get very warm so that still may not be enough to prevent it breaking down in the paddock or shed.
That's cool! I guess you need something that takes a medium time to break down, but when it does, it breaks down to organics rather than microplastics.
We've had plastic supermarket bags phased out for quite some time now. As far as I can tell, the only plastic bags being phased out on 1 July are plastic produce bags at supermarkets. We just take reusable ones, not the shitty plastic reusable ones but the canvas-ish ones that let you put 12L of milk in them without an issue.

Personally we have some little reusable bags that live in the car, just in case. But I prefer the big heavy duty canvas-like bags so you can carry all the groceries inside at once, so long as you can carry 30KG.
As far as I can tell, the only plastic bag ban that comes into effect on 1 July is the ban on plastic produce bags at the supermarket.
In addition, there's a ban on plastic disposable plates/cutlery, plastic fruit stickers, and a restriction on who can buy plastic straws as described here.
I'm happy about the stickers too! As I remember it, there was some time needed to come up with an alternative which is why it's happening now and not a few years back when other stuff was being banned.
Sure! I will try to keep it simple and not too long so I'll cover some of the main stuff without too much detail.
Open: the Fediverse is open, it's software is open source (the code is available for anyone to copy and improve on, or contribute changes back to the main software code), and any Meta platform will be proprietary (closed source). We don't know what the code is behind Facebook and they don't want us to know. The openness of the Fediverse is probably the core reason people are angry about NDAs and such.
Privacy: there are certainly privacy issues, but as an individual user this should be pretty much a non-issue if you don't follow any Meta communities and don't use a Meta account. Remember that for almost all Fediverse platforms, posts are public anyway.
Embrace, Extend, Extinguish: this phrase was coined during an anti-trust case with Microsoft in the 90s, there's a wikipedia page about it. The important bit is this:
The strategy's three phases are:
Embrace: Development of software substantially compatible with a competing product, or implementing a public standard.
Extend: Addition and promotion of features not supported by the competing product or part of the standard, creating interoperability problems for customers who try to use the "simple" standard.
Extinguish: When extensions become a de facto standard because of their dominant market share, they marginalize competitors that do not or cannot support the new extensions.
In our context, Meta is working on step 1, developing a platform compatible with the fediverse. People worry that steps 2 and 3 will come next, basically killing the Fediverse.
We built a house 7 years ago and it's insulated and has double glazing. I've installed Home Assistant with temp sensors in the bed rooms and seeing 70%+ humidity levels. Temperature is always above 16c...
I’m seeing some odd behaviour. I’ve set the heat pump to dry twice, for about 30 minutes. Both temp and RH drop, which is good. However, as soon as I turn it back to heat, the RH jumps up about 6% within 5-10 minutes. The sensor is a couple of meters away from the heat pump, so that’s odd.
Could this be as simple as the heat pump is blowing out dry air, but hasn't turned over much air total. Then when you stop it, the dry air mixes with other air around the house and the humidity comes back up?
Also outside it’s 14.5c @ 72% so I have no idea how to get it 16c and below 60%. That seems only possible if I shut all windows and have dehumidifiers running 24/7. I see articles where they recommend 30-50% in winter, how the heck is that possible when it’s damp outside.
I dunno man. I tend to think I live in a warm, dry house. We only heat rooms we are using but otherwise we don't hesitate to turn on a heat pump. We have never had an issue with mould or dampness. But I just have this feeling when I get some sensors they are gonna say 70% like yours and I'm gonna have to go down a rabbit hole trying to work out why!
We do have a DVS, but ours is an older home. I think they help more with heat recovery (all they do is pump air from your ceiling cavity into your house - which is often warmer because heat rises). They do slightly pressurise the house because they are pumping air in, which can help stop outside air getting in cracks, but I can't imagine a fairly new house like yours would have the same issue with that as our 50's house. Maybe throw a sensor in the ceiling and see if the air is warm and dry up there?
When I said candidate, it was when I was saying it's normally only used for candidate voting, not for parties like yours saying it was good for.
If you go and read it again with the knowledge I was talking about parties, hopefully you'll see what I was getting at. It doesn't create infinite seats, but it does create infinite votes.
Yeah I think you're right, though in my experience local elections have more options because you're voting in a whole council by name, rather than just a party and one person to represent you..
I still feel compelled to make sure I research and correctly rank all the other candidates in relation to each other
I started to take this more seriously when I found out about some crazy people in the running, like one that owed the council large amounts of money and I guess thought if he got on the council he wouldn't have to pay? Or he thought it was a silly rule so he'd get it changed so he wouldn't have to pay?
Anyway, he didn't make it in by it was closer than I would have liked, and his blurb was very general and non-crazy sounding (there were words, but they didn't really say much in terms of actually deciding who to vote for).
I ended up tracking a lot of them down on facebook, they often had campaign pages with 5 or 10 followers and if you read back through some posts you could get a feel for a lot of them.
I'm not sure how I feel about compulsory voting. I'm a big supported of compulsory voter registration, but to actually make people vote... I feel like you'll just get a bunch of people who don't care so will tick the one they've seen the most ads for rather than going on policies.
I don't feel like I'm getting my idea across, regardless of if I'm correct or not. I'll try to explain my thought process a little more.
Let's say there are 10 voters, and the election is only for parties. National has a list of potential MPs.
National:
Steve
Fred
Jim
Bob
Frank
Labour has put forward their candidates:
Susan
Mia
Tama
Oliver
Stevie
And then the Legalise Marijuana party saw a loophole, and so has registered a bunch of extra parties. Theirs looks like this:
LM1:
Jonathan
LM2:
Katie
LM3:
Sally
LM4:
Jimmy
LM5:
PJ
LM6:
Bobby
LM7:
Kelly
LM8:
Mary
LM9:
Jane
LM10:
Watson
Now our 10 voters come into the voting booth, and they see the list of options:
National
Labour
LM1
LM2
LM3
LM4
LM5
LM6
LM7
LM8
LM9
LM10
5 voters want to vote for National, so they only vote for National. They are all against legalising marijuana and don't like Labour's policies so they don't vote for anyone else.
4 voters want to vote for Labour, so they do. They are also all against legalising marijuana and don't like National's policies so they don't vote for anyone else.
1 voter wants to vote for the Legalise Marijuana party. The party has told them how they can vote for all 10 of their subsidiaries, so they do this.
Now we add up the votes.
5 for National 4 for Labour 10 for Legalise Marijuana subsidiary parties
The Legalise Marijuana party now has 52% of the seats and so can pass their law, but only 1 out of 10 voters actually voted for them.
You say this is fair because they all had the same number of potential votes. I say it's unfair because 10% of votes got 52% of seats.
Based on feedback from this post, we're going to trial pushing for more politically controversial posts to go in https://lemmy.nz/c/politics instead of !newzealand....
One simple thing would be to disallow cross-posting. If !politics finds it interesting, people can go there to read it.
I'd rather not have rules like this until it becomes a problem. As it stands, there haven't been any crossposts between different communities on lemmy.nz, only from remote communities.
If something that seems apolitical turns into a political discussion, then perhaps it could be moved there?
We simply don't have this ability. Because of how federation works, we might not ever get the ability to move posts along with comments.
Finally, I think you can find some fine lines by reviewing the articles that are posted. Anything about party politics or elections or politicians/parties criticising each other is politics. Luxon and Chippy commenting on flooding is different than them throwing even mild barbs at each other.
Yes, I think it's clear that posts about parties and the election go in !politics, but we sensed some desire to push more away from !newzealand into politics.
By reading only the headlines you posted it’s hard to judge. A moderator is going to need to review them.
Those headlines were chosen because of this. We wanted to know what the community thought in terms of posts that are not clearly for !politics.
I do have lots of thoughts on moderation as well as a lot of outdated experience. I’d be happy to share but when I’ve shared to em on /r/nz, people are generally pretty shitty to me about it. I think a lot of people like being able to shout at others and personally attack them so any threat to that is viewed poorly.
Come join the matrix chat, we talk about all sorts of stuff but it's not uncommon to have chats about what kinds of things we think should be allowed or what people's opinions are on things. If you don't have a Matrix account you can sign up on http://mtrx.nz (there are other instances too, Matrix is decentralised a bit like Lemmy so you can sign up to any instance and still join the chat).
