@trees I asked AI to explain cannabis strains to me like I was five. And then this happened…

Lol, I often ask Chat to describe things to me like a stoned surfer bro, it’s hilarious

Lol, yeah f*ck r_ddit - I’d much rather see this community grow in the fediverse!

convection or conduction heating?

I’d call it a hybrid. Given the placement of the oven and the heater, it feels like it does have a small convection heater, but it benefits greatly from hybrid heating once it heats up.

on-demand or session?

I mean I feel like without a dosing capsule you can probably treat it almost like an on-demand device, HOWEVER it’s not. I’m a session guy and I’d treat this more like a session device

i need to know these things for when my milaana vape dies. i feel like the button is already getting a little sketchy. meh.

Having handled an original Milaana (and zion), this is not a Milaana. If you want to directly replace the Milaana, look into any one of the sub-ohm 510 attachment vaporizers on the market and pair it with a decent ecig battery (with subohm compatibility)

Personally, I feel this device is best suited to someone who has a POTV One and looking for an upgrade OR the average ent who has $150 to blow on a vaporizer to “test the waters” and looking for a good entry-level device which is a solid hitter. The oven size is almost too big for me, but I bet it’s perfect for the first-time vaporent buying their first device trying to make the switch from smoking.

But yeah, I wouldn’t put this in the same ballpark as the Milaana at all haha - that’s a very different vaporizer

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

Always happy to contribute. For sure if your edge is still chugging along, I don’t see any reason to replace it.

the oven is too large for my needs

LPT - you can use an EMPTY dosing capsule as a spacer for microdosing. Place your herb inside the oven, then put an empty dosing capsule on top to hold things in place - you can use the dosing capsule with or without the lid to adjust microdose load sizes.

This works for essentially any vaporizer which uses dosing capsules, including your Fury Edge. It’s a great way to get a little nip throughout the day while still retaining that fresh green flavor for each sesh.

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

But you’re saying this doesn’t take capsules? That kinda sucks.

Ah should of mentioned. No this sucker has LARGE dosing capsules (which are larger than the POTV One/Edge and Rogue capsules). So it is a different size dosing capsule. Almost too large in my opinion (these capsules are close to the same size diameter as S&B Capsules, and taller)

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

So I have an Xmax V3 pro in my collection. The Lobo has a larger oven and a better heater which doesn’t quite "roast’ the herb the same way as the xmax v3 pro.

I think it comes down to form factor and load sizes. If the newbie needs a big cloud chaser, I’d go for the Lobo. If they want something with no glass mouthpiece to break, the V3 pro makes more sense.

Personally between the two I’d say the Lobo is better. But it’s also a bit more expensive than the V3 pro these days.

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I’ve got a few Arizer stems next to me. Yes they are close in size, but I’d still say the Lobo capsule is maybe 5% larger in volume (maybe one millimeter larger diameter than an Arizer stem can hold, and about 2mm taller

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

Awesome! The Xmax V3 Pro is a heck of a nice entry-level vaporizer. I wish it would have existed ten years ago and maybe we could have converted more people to vaporizing! Lol.

I personally prefer session mode more than on-demand.

Pro tip - Fury Edge/POTV One capsules fit the oven on the Xmax v3 Pro. This makes life easier for refilling on the go. AND useful for microdosing: Put a tiny bit of herb in the oven, and then use an empty capsule (with or without cap depending on size of microdose) to hold things in place during the session. Microdosing is a great way to reduce consumption.

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

Strange, I have an older Xmax V3 pro from at least a year ago and they fit my Fury Edge capsules with no problem. Didn’t know that Xmax makes their own dedicated capsules these days.

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

Wow! That’s totally not the ones that I have for my Fury Edge. The dosing capsules I have always used have lids which pop off. I honestly have never seen any capsules which screw on like you’re referring for the HealthyRips so I’d love to see photos (it’s my job to keep track of all capsules on the market… since I make loading and storage options for nearly every capsule on the market).

Funny because also my capsules both for the Fury Edge, HealthyRips Rogue, and my new POTV Lobo which just arrived today with several dozen capsules all have air holes on the bottom and top, but not the sides.

Wait, I think I know what capsules you’re referring to, but I don’t think they’re made by the same OEM I’m referring to - I’m not sure if those were an experimental capsule, or from another manufacturer. Because I think I’ve seen those, but I have never had access to them personally.

All my capsules match the ones you described for the Xmax V3 Pro (minus the original HealthyRips Fury2 mini screen capsules and S&B dosing capsules)

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

See I’ve never been a big fan of the Firefly vaporizers - I’m a clean freak and I always hated how they have the top plate with foam gaskets creating an air tight seal. Shame too because I like the design of the device overall. (The original FF1 was a heavy big ass device, but it was pretty cool to look at. The FF2 is a bit smaller and more manageable in the pocket)

Dry Herb Vaping vs Bong hits

I have been looking into dry herb vaping as a reusable some what healthy way to consume trees but I have seen some mixed reviews. Some say that vaping is even more potent that combustion while others claim that most dry herb vapes suck and only giant ball vapes can compare to a bong hit. Is it purely subjective or are there ways...

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

I know lots of others answered but I’ll try to sum up some notes for you:

  • Combustion releases a ton of extra stuff including a toxic cocktail of carcinogenics and carbon monoxide which are bad for your body. Some of these chemicals release the instant euphoric feeling followed by sedation. People who try dry vaporizing are expecting the same exact effects, when the reality is that it is cleaner and different.
  • Different temperatures extract different active compounds from the herb. In general terms a Sativa vapes great at lower temps (300-385F) while Indica and CBD strains work better at higher temps to extract that sedation and pan relief you get from the herb. This means you can essentially “customize” your high to what you want/need at that time. If you have a hybrid for example you could cook out the low temperature sativa side in the morning, then cook the same herb at night to extract the indica side of the herb.
  • Not all dry vaporizers cook at the same rate. They are essentially miniature ovens. Many people buy cheaper weaker underpowered devices preheat them and suck away like they’re hitting a waterpipe - this drains all heat out of the oven faster than the shitty heater can recover temps. The secret here is to either get a higher powered device, OR learn how to slow your roll and take a gentle sip (filling your lungs over 20 seconds instead of filling them in 3 seconds). This is partially why you hear people say vaporizers suck - because they are not obtaining a full extraction before they think it’s finished (since they’re getting no more vapor it must be fully cooked!).
  • Unlike smoking where you can “Green out” from smoking too much (due to excessive carbon monoxide poisoning which causes you to start vomiting if you smoke too much too frequently), dry vaporizing does not do this. You can essentially get MORE medicated than possible with combustion because you’re not inhaling all that nasty toxic shit.

Dry vaporizers come in many shapes and sizes. Some cook faster, some produce tastier vapor for flavor-chasing snobs like myself, some produce bigger clouds, others better for social gatherings, or more stealthy, faster extraction, etc. Most of us true ents have multiple devices in our collection depending on our needs at the time.

LPT - you can pair almost any vaporizer with a waterpipe for some epic vaporbonging action. Price does not equate to performance, there are many other vaporizers besides “ball vapes” that can totally get you where you need to be. Hell on vacation when my preferred portable failed (bad battery), I bought a shitty no-name $85 vaporizer at a smoke shop and was able to make it work for my needs until I got back home lol.

If you let me know more about your budget and what you want to do I can probably set you on a better path than a ball vape - I’m personally not a fan of them for novice users for several reasons.

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

Oooo you’d be the perfect candidate to try dry herbal vaporizing. 95% of the time those negative complaints you see are from hard core daily smokers who expect the exact same results… unaware of the fact that dry vaporizing does not yield the exact same results because it is a cleaner way to extract the actual active compounds.

The problem is most stoners confuse the affects of the herb itself… with that of combustion and inhaling carbon monoxide and carcinogenics. For people in that situation, I actually advise a one or two week “t-break” to let the body fully detox so they can fully enjoy the dry herbal vaporizing.

Prefilled concentrate “vapes” are a completely different ballgame. I equate those to eating junk food - because they taste great and produce awesome clouds… but they are never “full spectrum” - the extraction process to produce the concentrate doesn’t extract “everything”, and temperatures used in some extraction processes can actually cook off some of the lower temperature affects. This is why I personally prefer dry vaporizing. I made the switch 11 years ago and haven’t looked back - the only time I combust is socially with friends when they’re passing around something smokeable - but even then it’s a rare occasion (I just hate the taste/smell/effects when combusting).

Not all dry vaporizers are crated equal. Back about ten years ago, there were many cheap no-name vaporizers which were terrible some vaporized extremely slowly (a session could take 20+ minutes for a full complete extraction) - there were even some like the “Atmos Raw” which was claimed to be a dry herbal vaporizer - in reality it was an ecig vaporizer and it had an attachment which would physically burn the herb until it combusted - it was not an actual “Vaporizer”. But I know many people who paid $50+ for the Atmos Raw because it was the cheapest “vaporizer” they could find (and there were groupon deals and such offering them for $25, it was sad)

If you’re “vaporizer curious” I would start with something like the Xmax V3 Pro or PlanetOfTheVapes One vaporizer - both are great entry level devices which perform well for the price (they are not the best in the industry, but certainly good beginner vaporizers).

Alternatively, there is another brand of Vaporizers made in America called the “Dynavap Vapcap” - which is pretty much unlike any other dry vaporizer on the market - it mimics more of a single-hitter from the combustion side of cannabis in the way it looks. It’s not a “traditional” vaporizer in any sense of the word - but there is a reason why it has developed a cult-like following since it’s release eight or nine years ago.

Personally I stick to the plain old devil’s lettuce. Vaporizing pipe tobacco can be enjoyable if it’s flavored, but yeah I don’t bother trying many other herbs lol.

The fun part is the leftovers - unlike smoking you can re-use your leftovers from the dry vaporizer (I call it ABV - Already Been Vaped, others call it AVB - already vaped bud). It’s already cooked so you can eat it straight (some people add it to yogurt, others mix it into smoothies or chocolate milk, some make “firecrackers” with crackers and peanutbutter/jelly for example) - the results tend to be more sedative than usual.

I personally have used a sous-vide to make budder using cooked herb which set up in silicone molds. I then make rice krispy treats using the budder.

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

I have heard that once you start vaping a bowl in a vape, you have to finish it in one siting or rest of the bowl will be wasted/taste horrible. Is this true?

So the answer is “kinda”.

As mentioned, different temperatures extract different active compounds from the herb. It also cooks different flavor terpenes which affect how the vapor tastes.

When you load and electronic vaporizer, run a partial session, turn it off and then restart at the same temperature, you will find vapor production seriously diminished, and vapor taste changes to more of a “burnt popcorn” flavor.

You have several options in this regard:

  • Temperature-step. Some people enjoy a low temp session in the mornings, and then cooking the same load in the evenings for sedation. This works because you’re cooking a new set of compounds. The vapor flavor and production still changes, but it’s not quite as bad.
  • Microdose. There are different methods of microdosing with every vaporizer but basically you are cooking only as much as you need for that session and then reloading each time you use the device. This is great if you’re a flavor chasing snob like myself lol.

Now there are always exceptions to the rule - butane powered vaporizers don’t exactly play by the same set of rules. If you load up a Dynavap Vapcap take a puff and then let it cool down, you won’t notice a huge change in performance later when you re-heat the device. But that’s also because it’s not a flavor-chasing vaporizer, and instead it roasts the herb during the heatup phase which slightly alters the taste anyway - and the heat penetrates to the core of the load much quicker with a butane torch

Nice! I’m enjoying my 2020-M right now. What year is your M? I recently upgraded mine with the new Titanium helix tip and holy hell it just elevated my device to an entirely different level.

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been in the industry for over a decade. I have owned or handled countless devices in that time. However for some reason I’ve never had a FW in my personal collection. I really should change that haha.

The last FW I handled in fact was the Firewood4 way back in 2014/15-ish (anyone know Mephisto over on FuckCombustion? It was his - he’s an awesome guy)

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

Lol yeah 15 years ago I was right there with ya - cheap chinese vape bro’s knockoff I overpaid for like $200 at the local smoke shop. It was terrible.

I have had the luxury of sampling literally countless dry vaporizers. It’s been fun to watch the industry grow since those early days when it first started to “take off”

I wonder if the FW9 uses the same dosing capsules as the FW8 - I make a loading tray for that size capsule.

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

I mean there are favorites but I really just enjoy all dry vaporizers and trying them out. I like an Arizer Air Max with a waterpipe adapter for an extended vaporbonging session. The Lotus vaporizer with a j-hook and a crook of water in the hook to create a natural percolator is sublime.

The LSV from 7th floor is damn near a religious experience hitting a whole gram through the long stem. But I like my XQ2 more for social gatherings and versatility, etc.

I also recently upgraded my Dynavap vapcap with their new titanium helix tip which is a work of art and has turbocharged the performance of the device. All I need now is an armored cap and it’ll be an epic analog device.

Of course for niche, you can’t forget about the Venus Apollo - it used a small halogen lightbulb as a RADIANT heat source! Sadly the software was too confusing and I could never master using the device.

And if you don’t have one already, you should look into a subohm 510 attachment - it’s always fun to surf waves of vapor/heat by pulsing heat to an oven on demand (kinda like the TM2, but a lot more customization depending on what battery you use to power the heater).

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

Lots of us ents around here dry vaporize (not tobacco). Different temps allow us to extract different active compounds from the herb while preventing combustion which releases all sorts of nasty stuff like toxic carcinogenics and carbon monoxide which is worse for your health.

You’ll find a lot of anecdotal evidence from ents who made the switch to vaporizing and haven’t looked back.

As an added bonus, the taste/smell is MUCH better than combustion hahaha.

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

Lucky for me, I get to claim them as a business expense because I can’t test-fit products if I don’t have a copy of the device for testing purposes! haha. Plus one of my friends who lives two hours north of me has a collection of essentially every vaporizer made in the past 15 years (including many that never made it to the market, either early samples, or proof of concepts which went nowhere) - he works in the industry as well.

By all means don’t hesitate to ask how one device might compare to another device, because chances are I’ve likely played with them at some point lol

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

For sure I do custom orders all the time. However my availability for custom projects varies throughout the year. This summer was very slow so I worked on a bunch of new stuff including a whole new brand for my Home & office gear (stuff not associated with dry herbal vaporizers lol). However we’re leading into the fall where my wholesale partners worldwide start to stock up for the holiday season. In fact I just finished two massive jobs which required all my machines in the farm running 24/7 for over a month straight with zero downtime lol.

I need more machines, but I’ve run out of power in my studio and need to hire an electrician to run more power! lol

But yes, I’m totally down, here’s a contact form for special order requests when you’re ready - delta3dstudios.com/custom-order-request/

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

Lol, for sure this industry has done plenty for me over the past decade - dropping some knowledge is the least I can do to give back.

Thanks, D3DS is purely a labor of love with zero corporate overlords. It started as a small side hustle, I never thought it’d turn into a global brand with customers and retail partners worldwide.

What mid-priced device should I snag next?

As I’m sure many of you can imagine, I have a lot of devices in my collection (working and not working, as I sometimes need to test-fit prototypes of custom parts or mods). Heck, a few of my collection have long since been discontinued by this point (Indica vaporizer, Pax1, Grasshopper, VapeXhale Cloud+, Mistvape, etc)...

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve toyed with ball vapes in their infancy long ago, but I don’t have one in my personal kit yet. What sort of accessories were you thinking about? I have the ability to 3D print surgical grade stainless steel these days which has really opened up the world of possibilities. Hoping to start 3D printing ceramics again later this year or next year thanks to some recent advances in printable materials.

Delta3DStudios,
@Delta3DStudios@lemmy.world avatar

Head over to my website (Delta3DStudios.com) and fill out a contact form with some more info on the handles - that’s really something I could do if I have more info about mounting (square peg, screw mount, etc).

Avb storage jar with deep debowler and lid

I already sell an insert for the Jyarz Big Papi glass-lined storage container which turns it into a portable air-tight debowler. I also sell a smaller one for the jyarz Satchmo. I could make one for a standard 8 or 16-ounce glass mason jar if that would be preferable, but I think having a dark black container to conceal the material is more preferable.

All in one boxes for the whole kit to function out of, or to store the PID and stand neatly.

Yeah, I’ve considered doing custom box inserts, but the problem is they tend to be a bit too “Specific” to the individual user. I’d really like to build some sort of auto-generating code where the users can build their layouts and then order custom inserts for any size box, but we’re still a ways off from that dream.

Stands to hold housing neatly, or bowls. Scoops, picks, Dabbers, tamp tools, brushes, speed loaders, coil guards, coil cord management stuff.

I sell several custom “urchin style” stands which are easily customized to anyone’s needs. Just message me a list of diameters for hole slots and placements and I can make it happen.

I have a dream of designing a modular organizer stand at some point, but I am still tweaking the connection pins to lock everything together - trying to keep them low-profile but still printable by my hardware.
