TFW you realize that your kids understood one old tech reference in a show because of a character that collects “antique” tech in a different show.

The old tech: a VHS tape

How do we support the Katalin Karikó's?

There's a lot of reasonable outrage today around how Katalin Karikó was treated throughout her career (full disclosure: by my employer, UPenn). Obviously a number of someones made a huge mistake by not recognizing the brilliance and potential of her work - no question there!

What I've been thinking about and I'd love to get some scenius input on: how could we, as an academic community, do better?

Here's one summary of what happened:
https://billypenn.com/2020/12/29/university-pennsylvania-covid-vaccine-mrna-kariko-demoted-biontech-pfizer/

Taking seriously the notion that 1) we want to support the Katalin Karikó's, 2) high-risk, high-reward research takes time, and 3) everyone needs to go through a job evaluation at some point, here are a few ideas:

*) Better support to help geniuses communicate (and fund) their ideas.
*) More funding for high-risk, high-reward projects
*) A longer evaluation period for individuals engaged in high-risk/high-reward research

What would you add/change?

DesrochersLab,
@DesrochersLab@neuromatch.social avatar

@NicoleCRust all good thoughts here.

I would add giving people more ways to evaluate based on potential rather than output. I think it has to be balanced, but how many times have we heard that we can’t get funded to do the thing, until we’ve actually done the thing?

We recently submitted to a journal (J Anxiety Disorders) that has this feature of having a portal, that you do not have to log into (and can share with co-authors), that gives a detailed status. It's fantastic! Wish more would do the same!

Coming back from a different country where I don’t speak the language I’m contemplating how wonderfully mundane all the conversation around me is. Such a different experience if you don’t understand- can be disorienting even. Remember for visitors here!

DesrochersLab,
@DesrochersLab@neuromatch.social avatar

@elduvelle I agree. It also made me wonder about what's going (neurally). For me, I am very spatial, so coming back to a place where I know where everything is really well is a part of it.

I also can use all those habits to take cognitive load off (presumably) - but the habits are rusty! This morning when I got to work I succeeded in leaving my phone in the fridge with my lunch bag (oh the joys of jet lag - definitely not great for brain function...) 😅
