A lot of European countries have this weird addition to dairy and egg. What’s up with that? 🤔 https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68944117

@IceCubesApp why can’t I go back all the way in my notifications? I can see like back 7h and that’s it…
Edit: Ok, never mind, it’s probably just that I didn’t have internet access 😅

So the staff at is apparently not allowed to tell individual students that they support the strike 🤔

Also, just in passing - I support the strike and all its demands, actually I think the demands are really not going far enough, did you known the PhD students are not even paid for the teaching they do??

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

Postdocs should really strike together with the students. Did you know that postdocs at only have 14 days of holidays per year??

It’s interesting that the argument for not treating any of us properly is that “we are trainees”. As we all know, trainees are here to learn and are not really useful until they’re not trainees because they need constant supervision. Maybe we should see how academic research progresses if all “trainees” stopped “being trained” for some time… 🤔

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

“Oh but if we had to pay PhD students a proper salary then where would we find the money”
Well… among other solutions… just hire less of them, after all they are trainees so less burden on you? 🤔

I realize yelling at a traffic engineer is pointless (and I kept my voice even and calm!), but damn was that a frustrating phone call. I had to explicitly state that "I care more about a pedestrian or cyclist getting hit than someone in a car having to wait at the light a little longer" when he was like "we try to keep cars moving on University". Apparently there are two protected lefts in that cycle currently and only one also gets a pedestrian signal during school hours maybe?

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

@SRLevine me or my colleagues keep having near-misses with cars at a crossroad next to our uni because there’s one of these stupid “cars don’t have to wait for green light to turn right” rule. The cars pay attention to other cars but absolutely don’t care about pedestrians. It’s really annoying, stressful and dangerous.
In France at least red means red and everything is clear!

At we have our own protests… and overly exaggerated response from the authorities:

“At 1:30 a.m., the Hanover Police Department announced that 90 people were arrested during the protests. Individuals were arrested for “multiple offenses” — including criminal trespass and resisting arrest” 🤔

“armored vehicles spotted on campus” 🤔🤔

Dear neighborhood community leader,
You're a very nice guy, but is the leafblower on a Sunday afternoon, really that necessary? Or a leafblower at all? These dead leaves belong to the ground where they fell (and their goal is to fertilize it) not in an incinerator.

@adredish ahahaa yeah I can believe that :)
How can you make sure that your system remains up-to-date as time passes though? Yearly review to clean it up and try to improve the parts that can?

    ‘We need to slow down scientific publishing’

    'We focus on metrics to evaluate a scientist’s career: how many articles they have published, how many times they were cited, what was the impact factor of all these articles. '

    So oral exam at end of PhD. Good idea or just a tradition that doesn't make any sense any more? What are the good things about them? If we didn't do them, how else could we get those good things?

    elduvelle,
    @elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

    @lana @neuralreckoning 👆This! And also pretty much the first time (possibly only, if people move on from academia) when you can gather some specialists to talk about topics that interest you and who also consider you an expert. So closure, recognition, exchange of ideas. (At least that’s what it is in France, I heard the UK one was more like an exam and is not public, that’s probably not as nice to experience)
