"SemVer is a known best practice," I insist as I shrink and transform into a corncob.

Doomed_Daniel,
@Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@steve life-hack: even stable software that has been around for over 5 years can easily embrace SemVer without worrying about backwards-compatibility by staying below version 1.0.0

Doomed_Daniel,
@Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@steve for example: "Backward compatibility for backups is important so that our users are always able to restore saved data. Therefore restic follows Semantic Versioning to clearly define which versions are compatible. (...)
Once version 1.0.0 is released, we guarantee backward compatibility of all repositories within one major version"

this has been on their website since at least January 2018, current version is 0.15.2 :-D

(restic is great though.)

rclone is a nice tool and all, but their bash_completion file is 4.2MB, which seems a bit excessive..
but it's ok:

Kitten jumped onto the power button on my PC while I was playing Everspace 2 and shut the machine down near the end of a particularly long unsaveable section 🤦🏻‍♂️

Time to change the power options I guess

Doomed_Daniel,
@Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad yeah, powerbuttons on top of the case are one of the dumber trends in modern PCs

Doomed_Daniel,
@Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad as my powerbutton is a bit wonky (sometimes needs several tries to start PC) I was thinking about replacing it with some kind of industrial button that I'd put on a side of the case (no space in front), like this one.
Would drilling a ~2cm hole in the side of the case though, which is probably not trivial as it's made of steel

Why, in 2023, installing Windows on a computer is still as exciting as watching paint dry, then crumble away, then the wall disintegrate, and then watch the building decay into dust...

Doomed_Daniel,
@Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@burgerbecky if you want an exciting installer, you should use openbsd - they let you calculate the partition layout yourself ;)

I don't really need OS installers to be exciting, but they should be fast at least

The downside of getting into gamedev and participating in a jam right now is that continuing work on what is hopefully going to be my submission is way more fun than debugging the Jekyll build of the OctoPrint plugin repository that I have to do right now. Alas, first work, then play.

Also, I really need to migrate the OctoPrint web pages to Hugo, that would save me many a headache...

Doomed_Daniel,
@Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@foosel Hugo has also caused me headaches in the paste, as in updating to a newer hugo version required me to adjust my theme and also parts of my posts (something with parsing markdown had changed, I think it was about newlines around ``` blocks)

But apart from that it's ok, and I've grown to like software written in Go because it tends to be very self-contained

In trying to make sense of the culture war going on, it occurs to me that there is a sort of political/cultural compass here with axes that ought to be orthogonal:

  1. Trans-allied vs. trans-hating
  2. Pro-gender (as in: gender is a good thing and ought to be important) vs. anti-gender (as in: gender is a bad thing and ought to be de-emphasized)

I wonder what the distribution of people on these two axes would look like.

Doomed_Daniel,
@Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@nh
I'm not sure that corner is that small, on the trans-side, probably at least many non-binary people share that opinion?
But IIRC I'm also under the impression that many(?) binary trans people feel like "gender shouldn't be this important, but $gender_x seems more fitting for me"

Doomed_Daniel,
@Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@nh Apart from that, the whole terminology around "gender", is very confusing, with "gender shouldn't matter" being "postgenderism", "I'm against anything that isn't cis-het" being "anti-gender", "I hate everyone who wasn't born with female reproductive organs and still identifies as female" being "gender-critical" - an then there's Germans who are against "gendern", meaning they don't want to use gender-inclusive language..

Doomed_Daniel,
@Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@nh shower-thought: maybe it's a bit like marriage? In the sense that I'm against marriage. I don't like the concept, I don't see the point in involving authorities (state/church) in relationships, and I especially dislike that it can reduce taxes.
However, it exists and is unlikely to go away anytime soon, so it should be available to everyone and I don't blame anyone for marrying for its benefits, esp. regarding immigration, reduced bureaucracy when having children etc

These new AMD Ryzen based frame.work laptops sure are tempting.. luckily, if I'd preorder now it would only ship in Q4, so I might as well wait until they're properly available :-p

But I guess my next laptop really will be a frame.work, that concept of upgradability and user-repairability (incl. the possibility of reusing old mainboards as Mini-PC) is really awesome

Doomed_Daniel,
@Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@slembcke nice, please post about your experience with it once it has arrived! :)

Doomed_Daniel,
@Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt true - but the prospect of having to wait half a year suppresses the "I want this now, must order" reflex for me, and allows more reasonable thoughts like "wait until someone has tested it, you don't even know if it's gonna have issues like too much noise" to get through ;)

    but she was already 1.5 years old when we got her and maybe the prior owners discouraged her from sleeping in the bed

    Recommend checking out the post I RTed last night about unzip because it's amazing. But out of morbid curiosity I decided to check out the unzip source code because it's truly horrifying: https://github.com/LuaDist/unzip/blob/master/unzip.c

    Doomed_Daniel,
    @Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @fraggle is it?
    zlib is by Jean-loup Gailly and Mark Adler, unzip (as part of Info-ZIP) is by Samuel H Smith.
    I don't think the Info-ZIP and zlib projects belong together (they don't even use the same license)

    Doomed_Daniel,
    @Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @fraggle (though I'm not surprised if the code is similar, as zlib also supports ancient systems. but if you want a more modern zlib-alternative, check zlib-ng, the project you linked hasn't been updated in > 5 years)

    Doomed_Daniel,
    @Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @fraggle maybe they took some code from zlib, but unless I'm mistaken they're generally separate projects
    (TBH I'm surprised they don't seem to just link zlib)

    BTW: zlib has its own zip implementation (not part of libz.so though): https://github.com/madler/zlib/tree/master/contrib/minizip

    Last year I made the mistake of replacing my Nokia dumb phone with a smartphone.
    I chose a Samsung A33 because Samsung were the only Android vendor promising 5 years of (security) updates, at least in that price-range.

    Unfortunately https://googleprojectzero.blogspot.com/2023/03/multiple-internet-to-baseband-remote-rce.html has shown that these promises are worthless - critical vulnerabilities that can be remotely exploited if you just know the phone number, Samsung has known about them for 3 months and not patched them.
    That's unacceptable!

    Doomed_Daniel,
    @Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    I finally got the "April Security Update" that supposedly fixes the vulnerabilities - according to news posts in late March that cited a post from the Samsung support forums or something.
    Of course the changelog doesn't explicitly mention this, only vague "security improvements" - Samsungs communication on this was and is absolutely unacceptable, and so is the fact that it took about 5 months from them getting the reports from project zero to endusers like me (hopefully?!) getting fixes.

    Doomed_Daniel,
    @Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @MrNuclearMonster
    I mean, I have thought about replacing it with an iphone after this disaster, but..

    1. that's expensive
    2. I just bought this fucking phone less than a year ago
    3. AFAIK getting data on/off the phone when using Linux is more painful than with Android
    4. I don't like the extremely-walled-garden aspect of iOS devices

    OTOH they provide updates for really long and the smaller form-factors (that don't seem to exist for Android anymore) are nice

    Doomed_Daniel,
    @Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @MrNuclearMonster TBH, I don't think I like any smartphone
