"To me, the latest is the latest my OS provides me. If maintainers dont care about pushing the latest into the OSes they support, it's not me to blame. I think curl maintainers should push Centos to provide the latest to all users. What's the purpose of you fixing multiple bugs and security holes if you dont spend time to make it available to the broader audience?"

We are obviously all just too lazy.

@bagder Some people... ๐Ÿ™„

While at it, we lazy maintainers should obviously also make sure that cold fusion finally gets invented, because we obviously don't care about our projects if we don't care about the future of humanity. Same thing with world peace, naturally. /s

I've been in a crafting mood for a few days now. One of the results of that were my recent adventures in book binding , the other was finally figuring out a good way to create custom playing cards for print'n'play games.

I stumbled across in one of my itch.io bundles and that was the trigger: Cards were printed one sided on a piece of 185gsm linen stock, sealed with fixative, folded and spray glued together, then cut. A bit thick but feel & shuffle great!

Front and backs of the cards

Then I decided that I needed a fitting version of the rules, so I created that. All 8 pages now are just on a long folded strip, both sides printed on.

I uploaded those to BGG too after getting a quick ok from the game author, but so far the file hasn't been published.

The rules folded out to pages 1 through 4

@foosel@chaos.social avatar

And finally, just now I finished a custom tuckbox matching the design, with the credits from the rules on the back as well.

Printed on heavy card stock and then cut, folded and glued together. Fits the cards plus the rules perfectly and now I'm enjoying playing this game even more ๐Ÿ˜Š

I have it on my desk for quick work breaks (one play doesn't last longer than 10min), and it feels a bit like Nemesis Light ๐Ÿ˜… I can recommend it if you are fine with sudden death ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Our roof garden is shaping up nicely! :)

Among other things, we planted spinach, kohlrabi, peas, and radishes this year, and it's fun to see them getting bigger! ๐ŸŒฑ

I just cleared the first level of my first run of ๐Ÿฅณ

Having a lot of fun crawling the dungeon and drawing the map, and am starting to get creative (it IS a solo RPG after all!). After I found the third bucket I decided, enough is enough, returned to the Blacksmith I had found and turned one of them into a helmet. All that noise of course triggered a patrol of a guard and their guard dog, but thankfully I rolled well ^^

Really fun game, can recommend!

The last couple of weeks were a bit too much between work and some personal things, and so I decided that this time I'll take a break before I hit a burnout.

Tomorrow is a public holiday and I'm also going to take off Thursday. Fridays I don't work anyhow (three day weekend for two plus years now to keep the burnout at bay), so that will be five days of doing stuff that I want to do vs that I have to do.

I hope that'll recharge the batteries ๐Ÿ˜…

Inspired by @stiftnuersel I decided to finally try to add book binding to my skill set and started with binding both books of 2D6 Dungeon (also a tip by @stiftnuersel).

Especially sewing the paper stacks was incredibly relaxing. I put an audio book on (going through The Stormlight Archive again) and just went for it.

Decided to go with a soft cover. The cardboard came from some deliveries and the fabric from the left overs of an old sewing project.

Quite happy with the result ๐Ÿ˜Š

Template used for creating the sewing holes.
Finished book covered with a black structured fabric.
Leafing through the book.

While playing the game I opened the books on the wrong side a bunch of times, so today I got the vinyl cutter* out, quickly fetched the lettering from the PDFs, turned them into vectors in Inkscape and then cut them out of some white vinyl label foil and put them on the books (yes, there are three now, I also got the expansions and experimented a bit more with binding with the Lairs one already).

So much nicer now ๐Ÿ˜Š

So far this works amazingly well for me, the cutter never even saw the original software so far ^^

PSA, contacting a maintainer via a direct email or other direct contact options should always be the LAST thing to try to get support with an issue*.

OSS projects usually have public options to get in contact, be it issues, discussions, forums, heck, even a Discord.

Any form of private communication simply does not scale & also doesn't help others with the same issue.

Use public communication.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

I think this might be the first OctoPrint release that ever triggered a post on all3dp ๐Ÿค” I'm not sure what to think about the fact that I needed to add achievements for that to happen ๐Ÿ˜‚

Don't get me wrong, it's nice to see some recognition of my work, but frankly past releases have brought so much more important stuff and were completely ignored in that regard, so this feels a bit weird.

An OctoPrint release overshadow by some major CI issues (outage, not my fault, but I managed to solve it with a workaround), PyPI changes refusing to accept my sdist name (was still accepted during RC phase, will have to push that manually) and still being exhausted from yesterday.

Timing ๐Ÿ˜… But it's out ๐Ÿ˜Š

I finally gathered the courage to write a mail to my landlord about installing some flexible solar panels to my (south facing) balcony.

If he says yes (no idea how big my chances for this are) I'll also have to clear it with the house owner assembly, and it is really unclear whether I'll get an ok from there and if so how long it'll take.

All of this so far made me not want to even start this fight, as stuff like this costs me a TON of energy, but on the other hand it's a shame not to try.

foosel,
@foosel@chaos.social avatar

I was hoping to just wait until I finally get some backup from new laws, but alas, things like this are taking ages in this country. So here I am, nervous AF, but proud of myself for jumping over my shadow.

foosel,
@foosel@chaos.social avatar

@mattb Because in Germany aesthetics are still more important than energy saving and combating climate change, and my balcony is on the front side of the house and omg how horrible would it be to see solar panels there (the irony is, on the other side of the street is a big ad sign from a local company I have to look at daily, I'd rather look at panels).

Form over function and all that.

foosel,
@foosel@chaos.social avatar

Got the ok from the landlord but as expected the assembly of all owners will have to agree too. No idea when they'll meet next but at least he says he'll put my wish on the list of topics.

No idea how long that'll take though. Worst case nothing will happen before 2025.

foosel,
@foosel@chaos.social avatar

Mail from my landlord, house management wants a ton of info on installation details, liability, whether the panels and such are actually supposed to be used on balconies, etc.

I knew this would be a ton of overhead, which is why I wanted to look at flexible panels with minimal installation needed.

Will have to ping them and figure out what exactly they want, landlord's mail was a bit unclear. Ah well... once I have some air for breathing again, I'll tackle the next step.

As many people, I tend to struggle with , especially things that are sent to me by physical post.

Yesterday @excds pointed me to https://github.com/paperless-ngx/paperless-ngx, and I installed it and first impression is that it looks amazing.

I fed it a few scans of mail, and it OCRed it. So now I can:

  • Search my snailmail.
  • Copy and paste from snailmail.
  • Tag my snailmail.

Next up is to make my scanner automatically upload scans to a directory it monitors.

This is huge for me.

foosel,
@foosel@chaos.social avatar

@excds @Doomed_Daniel @ainmosni Brother MFC-L8690CDW here, same thing. Have some shortcuts defined for scanning to paperless from the document feeder or the glass, so I just drop things in, press a button, done.

foosel,
@foosel@chaos.social avatar

@excds @Doomed_Daniel @ainmosni It's just the truth ^^

I also have a Brother QL-820NWBc and a Brother p-touch D400 that I all love dearly ^^

foosel,
@foosel@chaos.social avatar

@Doomed_Daniel @excds @ainmosni I can only recommend it, have used it for both work and private projects since 2018 (actually I just printed a print'n'play card game over the weekend, some RPG rulebooks the one before that, and there are also various photos around my flat printed on it) and it's still working like on day 1 on the first toner fill. Though this thread reminded me to pick up some replacement toner cartridges as I have some more colorful projects coming up ^^

foosel,
@foosel@chaos.social avatar

@Doomed_Daniel I'm fine with it, for just putting up some memories it's totally fine. And I'm also happy with the regular colour prints. Since I switched to Linux and its drivers stuff got a bit darker, I haven't yet found the best settings again, but for me it's fine. YMMV
