You understand correctly. Migrating an instance would involve updating the source of truth to a different instance, and somehow notifying all other instances to stop checking the old instance and start checking the new.
Maybe ActivityPub (the protocol the Fediverse is built on) already has a method for assigning redirects, but I would have so many questions. What happens to instances that are experiencing an outage during the migration? What happens with blocked instances if that block is removed after the migration? How long would the redirect notice live? What if a new community with the same name is created on the original instance? What happens to old links pointing to the old instance? Personally, implementing such a feature sounds like a huge headache.
As for what happens to an an instance once it is orphaned (say the instance with the "true" community blocks another instance or goes dark), then the orphaned copies will become little islands that are only accessible to members on the orphaned instance and any comments, votes, etc are no longer shared across the Fediverse.
My subrsiption with surfshark is ending soon and I was wondering if there was something better around the same price. There are a lot of ads about many VPNs but a lot of them don't look so "safe and private" as they want you to think so it's hard to really figure it out. I don't want to spend too much since I don't use them very...
I left PIA after they were aquired by Kape (formerly Crossrider). There's a lot of shady past there, from their ties to Israeli surveillance and intelligence organization (Unit 8200) to their history of producing malware. It just made me uncomfortable, so I moved to ProtonVPN and have been very happy there.
Each instance will have it's own rules and has the capacity to include or exclude other instances.
For example, you want a work friendly instance that does not index NSFW, gambling, drug use, or hate speach. Chances are that you can find and join that instance. You'll see posts from instances that aren't blocked and your posts will be shared with instances that have not blocked yours.
If you want to switch, then you need to create a new account on the new instance. You can maintain accounts on both instances, but they would be separate accounts.
Additionally, if you want to be ruler supreme, and are willing / able to do the tech work, you can set up your own instance that only you and those you invite are able to join. This instance would join the Federated community to share content based on settings.
I know instances can block pulling in content from other instances, but I am not sure if they can block broadcasting content.
A year or two ago I got some Trader Joe’s “Dark Chocolate Mint Coin” cookies. They were amazing! Basically Girl Scout Thin Mints, but affordable. Problem is I have not seen them in any Trader Joe’s I have been in since and I cannot find it on the Trader Joe’s website....
Apparently there's an issue with some instances banning users for criticizing authoritarian governments. Is lemmy.world a safe place to criticize governments?
Whether I agree with the idea or not, breing exposed to so many different points of view changes how I look at various topics. Sometimes it reinforces and strengthens my position and sometimes I change my stance.
I feel like Reddit (and now Lemmy) allow me to engage / listen to discussions on an issue. Discussions that involve a wide assortment of different viewpoints. It's hard to find that in most places on the internet.
I don't mean to be pessimistic, bit since most subreddits are only going dark for a couple days, the site will basically be back to normal soon. I wonder how many users here are only here because of temporary outrage and not because they actually prefer Lemmy. I'm curious about people's outlook on this situation.
I like to think that Lemmy is transitioning from early adopters to First Followers (to take from this Ted talk
If only 10% of new users stay, they start to build out new servers and communities. As Reddit continues to degrade, some (maybe even most) of those 90% will start to trickle back, creating lasting growth and widespread adoption (vs the casual tourism).
When I was a kid somebody told me that McDonald's uses wider straws to encourage people to drink faster and therefore subconsciously encourage them to buy larger drinks. Is that true? I have no idea, but I do know that those straws made excellent blow guns for shooting Tic Tacs across a classroom.

Lemmy should implement the ability to clone a community from one instance to another
I think this feature will help keep communities alive if something goes wrong. I hope Lemmy implements this feature.

YSK How to tie your shoes. Seriously, I was doing it wrong for years before I saw this 3 minute Ted talk. (youtu.be)
Why YSK is to prevent your shoes from coming untied, creating a tripping hazard (plus it looks better).

What value did you get from Reddit that you hope to realize or expand upon here?
For me, it's a few things....
How many users here do you think are going to get bored and end up back on Reddit as soon as the blackout ends?
