“These other guys aren’t getting punished enough, so this guy isn’t going to get much of a punishment” is the sort of reasoning the gets judges thrown off the bench.

Russians were allowed to stage a rare protest.

My wife works at a public library and put four of these together for the special event they were holding in a park:

All that Israeli propaganda about new luxury seafront property in Gaza…

You’re going to love that beach house that has no electricity or running water or sewage or garbage collection or an accessible road or an easy route to a store or a hospital…

We could easily afford to rebuild America and Gaza if we didn’t spend so much money on our military.

GDP is not the amount of money spent on infrastructure or foreign aid. That comes directly from tax dollars and need to be measured that way. The entire economic output of the United States is not relevant when discussing infrastructure rebuilding or foreign aid.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That sounds pretty expensive to do and even more expensive to maintain considering what’s around it. I sure wouldn’t trust that road to remain structurally sound indefinitely with all the water and power running through it.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry… you think foreign aid and infrastructure doesn’t come from tax dollars? What do you think is in government budgets that have to get passed every year?

Can trans men compete in men’s sports? Because I’m always told that “women” can compete in men’s sports if they want, but they don’t have the athletic abilities. So what about trans men? They could be taking hormones that increase their muscle mass. So they can play basketball with the men despite not having a penis, right?

Also, can we stop making such a big fucking deal about sports, especially college sports, as if it were anything other than a form of entertainment?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

They are a big deal for the same reason rich people’s charities are a big deal- government has failed the poor. Athletics should not be a way into college just because you have a physical advantage over other poor people. There is nothing equitable about that. That is, in my opinion, not a defense of college athletics and more than it’s a defense of the Salvation Army.

FlyingSquid,

I would also say that conflating the fact that specific college sports are taken way too seriously and made way too big a deal of doesn’t reflect athletic scholarships as a whole, considering people don’t go crazy about college wrestling or college field sports. When was the last time you heard of a college pole vault star? If there were some sort of “scandal” involving a transgender person in women’s college pole vault, would we even hear about it?

I remember something similar with the previous eclipse, which I watched from a different park in Kentucky. But there weren’t any leaves on the trees here yet for that to happen this time.

It’s an authentic 19th century log schoolhouse. I think the roof is going to have a few pinholes.

Before people want to blame Islam for this as a kneejerk reaction when they read that this is in Africa-

According to Susan Dicklitch-Nelson, a professor of government at Franklin & Marshall College, homophobia in Uganda was not always this prevalent, but anti-gay sentiment influenced by Christian evangelists from the US has helped fuel a cultural war on homosexuality for the past two and half decades.

Muslims make up around 14% of Uganda’s population.

I will be the first to say that Muslim countries are persecuting queer people horribly, but they are scapegoated when Christian countries, influenced by American evangelicals, are doing the same things.

I’ve been a fan for many years and I have bought a few things from his store over the years. For my money, one of the most consistently funny web cartoonists, even if he doesn’t publish cartoons very often. I really hate that this happened to him, but at least he found a funny side to it.

It especially sucks for someone like this because Facebook is a big way to distribute comic strips.

In the U.S., where medical care is expensive, I think money to cover that should be expected.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Extremely difficult. Courts have essentially ruled that adoption agencies can turn down whoever they want based on their religious views, and not just queer people, this was a case over a Jewish couple trying to adopt from a Christian agency because that was the only one available in their area. And, of course, that’s true in a lot of places. All the adoption agencies are Christian and will only let other Christians adopt.

Which is pretty fucking ironic considering they kept saying adoption was an alternative to abortion.

He was not looking up when it was 100% dark out. You should be able to tell from the photo, but it he also just wasn’t.

And now he’s doing this. What the fuck? time.com/…/trump-bizarre-solar-eclipse-campaign-a…
