Tomorrow, the Libre Graphics Meeting @lgm 2024 is starting in Rennes, France.

The GIMP team has already been around for a few days to meet and discuss. We have some talks planned on Friday and Saturday.

We just released the last 2.10 stable version: GIMP 2.10.38. It features very cool improvements for graphics tablet 🖵🖌 support on Windows! 🥳

@uberprutser The MS Store always takes a few days to review updates (this part is out of our control). The new installer has been pushed already, but we don't expect it to be public before a day or 2. 🙂
As for the double-version, it's weird (unless you mean you also have a dev version 2.99.x; these can be installed side by side). Note that we'll have better store integration (updates handled by store, etc.) once we hit version 3.0, though we'll likely have to make a new store entry.

@fauli1221 No the project doesn't "see any of this money". Anyone is very free to write a book about using GIMP and it's not a problem to us. 😄

Quite the contrary, we are welcoming 🤗 books 📔 (especially good ones which can help artists to better understand internals and make good use of the software) and have a page listing third-party books: https://www.gimp.org/books/ (by the way, this one is not listed apparently, we welcome anyone proposing an update to the website for it).

@fauli1221 Oh I see. Well we still don't see any of the money and it's still not illegal (as long as they are abiding by the license, such as providing source code to anyone asking for it, display appropriately copyright notice, etc.).

Packaging news: thanks to a new (and very active 👍) contributor, Bruno, we now have a MSIX package 📦 which is still being tested and will replace the current MS Store 🪟 package for GIMP 3 (this will give us proper update from the store and better support of store features in general).

As if not enough, Bruno also implemented an AppImage 📦build for Linux 🐧, though it's currently only usable for development testing.

@QuadRadical Probably not, from the info we have about this lib so far (we have not dug deep either). This library is really for specializing GNOME applications. But we are a cross-platform application and this is important to us.

@QuadRadical You are right, I'm not sure about the cross-platform part, though it's never a good idea to use a library which is explicitly made for targetting GNOME applications.

From what we are told, it steers towards following some of GNOME choices which are not necessarily ours. The first example given to us was that it will make problems for theming (on all platforms). But we love giving the ability to theme our software!

But again, we'll see about this when we'll reach this point.

@QuadRadical It's true that GTK is steered a lot by GNOME these days, but not only, so no, it's not a GNOME technology. It's a generic toolkit.

I mean, do you know what the 'G' stands for historically in "GTK"? "GNOME ToolKit"? Nope! "GIMP ToolKit"! Yes GTK comes from GIMP (even though it took independence since). 😁

In fact, from what I understood, this is the reason of libadwaita being born: to specialize GTK into their own needs/usage.

I think I'm going to start downloading templates and making @GIMP template files for them.
I do wish there was an easier way to make the "white text, black outline" than just doing a "alpha selection + grow + fill" process. Definitely feels like one of those things that should be an option in the text tool or a plug-in, but I don't know how to make gimp plugins.

@ticktok Text outline is a feature in Text tool/layers now, though only in development version (since 2.99.14): https://www.gimp.org/news/2022/11/18/gimp-2-99-14-released/#text-tool-new-outline-options

It will be in the stable version GIMP 3.0.0 when we'll release it (soonish! Originally planned for May though it may be June or during the summer, I guess).

@mitsunee This is probably the bug which was recently fixed and was caused by a recent change in GLib: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/10785

This fix will be included in the next stable release of GIMP. 😄

Fingerprinting-Testseiten suggerieren oft, dass man eindeutig erkennbar ist. Das ist allerdings nicht entscheidend, sondern ob man über Surf-Sessions hinweg wiedererkennbar/verfolgbar ist. Der Tor-Browser, Mull oder auch Brave schneiden hierbei gut ab. Am Ende gilt aber auch: Lasst euch nicht verrückt machen. 😉

Affinity has been bought by Canva, to compete with Adobe.

It was of course a matter of time before Affinity would outgrow its status of sympathetic small-scale Adobe alternative, and be sold for large proceeds.

Canva is into AI. Hopefully Affinity will get some useful AI-powered image processing tools, like upscalers and denoisers, but Canva will probably add generative shit and introduce subscriptions sooner or later.

@hauleth @metin Hi! Just in case you missed this, we've got non-destructive layer effects in our dev builds now. You can even test the feature with our last development version (GIMP 2.99.18). This will be in the stable GIMP 3 which should be released within a few months. 😄

GIMP 2.99.18 is out! Enjoy, everyone! This release may be quite an unstable one, because it's in the middle of important "space invasion" work, so we don't recommend using it for production.

Consider it as a demo of what GIMP 3 will be, feature-wise. 😄

By the way, project applied to GSoC this year again. We'll see if we get selected.

In the last 2 years, we had 4 projects, all of them ending up merged in the codebase.

Among them @CmykStudent has been a successful GSoC contributor 2 years in a row. This year, they are moving up as a mentor! 😄
