I can’t believe Apple still doesn’t let me buy a macOS app on iOS or an iOS/iPadOS app on macOS. I learn about an iPad app while using my mac plenty of times and might not want to turn on my iPad to switch to it to get the app.

I might be out and about on my iPhone and learn about a macOS app I want to get - no can do?!

There isn’t even a cross-app-store wishlist I can add it to. I have to actually mail a link to the app page to myself and try to remember to buy it - so primative!

Rewatching Mad Max Fury Road before seeing Furiosa this afternoon. Forgot just how intensely good it was.

@gedeonm It had no captions?

@gedeonm Ah, in an actual theater. Missed that part. Sorry it was a hassle :-/

We’re digging a pond in the backyard and now I guess it’s an archeological dig

@pixel Some old bottles one finds that way are collectible!

So my sewer pipe (which has been an endless source of fun, let me tell you), runs through the power company's land and whoever cut their grass the other day was clearly daydreaming and mowed right over the pipe AND the bright orange fiberglass stick that was marking its location.

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@bigzaphod Surprised that’s not in an access box that is flush with the surface. Whomever installed that sewer pipe took a shortcut, seems like.

Something like this or the common rectangular one:

@bigzaphod Sounds like shoddy work to me.

You could install them without too much trouble. Bit of labor but nothing hard. PVC pipe is easy to work with. Or there’s maybe a handy man in your area who could help you with it.

Basic steps are:

  • dig the hole around the pipe deep and wide enough for the cover plus bit extra depth for gravel under edge of cover

  • cut the vertical pipe to right height and clean outside (no dirt etc) (1/3)

@dxzdb Should have enough metal in it for a metal detector to locate it, ideally ;)

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@dxzdb 😂 well sure, but that’s water long under a bridge so… let it go! :)

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@dxzdb If it doesn’t have the box around it then it’s likely just PVC. (Sorry to get your hopes up!). The box lid has screws in many cases.

Definitely worth putting a chunk of iron next to any you find :)

@dxzdb Any chance they were evenly spaced apart so finding one or two would hint at the pattern/spacing?

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@dxzdb We have one inside our house also in the basement.

New scanning setup using a customised version of Keith’s recommendation and some diy hardware. https://hachyderm.io/@SmileyKeith/112469957208035691

Accessibility’s inverse mode is great for previewing the photos on an iPad.

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@schwa Neat! What light is that?

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@schwa Thank you. I have negative to scan and my unused Epson V370 scanner has some kind of fogging on the inside surface of the glass so I have to figure something else out (apparently the anti-reflective coating they used on them degrades with time - even in storage :-/ ).

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@schwa <nod> Makes sense. I actually have something like that I got for video conferencing when I was last working and before the new M-series macs which have dramatically better low light camera performance. I’ll have to dig it out and see about some kind of diffuser (plexiglass? Probably need a spacer because of heat. Another Project! (sigh) :)

Thanks

Working (who am i kidding, playing) with a film camera again has made me really appreciate just how OP modern digital cameras are.

I literally cannot do things with this film camera that I take for granted on my Zf. Need to shoot wide open, in super bright sunlight? Not a problem.

Oh wait I only have 400 film and the fastest shutter is 1/2000… Nevermind…

(Auto-)ISO anywhere between 50-204800 is just nuts in comparison (and a shutter speed of 8000…)

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@pixel @schwa I do feel like there are benefits to that though (except documenting action environments like sports or whatever). Slow down, look carefully, and compose the shot.

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@schwa @pixel I do not, but that is included in “action environments” :-)
