How Can Anyone Object to ‘15 Minute Cities’? (www.currentaffairs.org)

We live in an age when the most unobjectionable and necessary ideas for progress can give rise to paranoia and fear. If the most innocuous, unoriginal possible idea can fuel paranoia, how can we hope to have a sensible discussion about the future of our places?

GraceGH,

The right wing is afraid of a totalitarian dystopia?

Lol, no they’re not. They salivate at the thought of having a totalitarian dystopia where they’re on top. This is just more projection shit on their part. If anything, 15 minute cities deradicalize people by putting them in proximity to more diversity, make people friendlier by making them get to know their neighbors better, and financially better off because they’re not forced to buy and maintain a vehicle to live a healthy life.

But fascists can’t put the boot on your neck as easily if you have more wiggle room with money or solidarity with the working class, so of course they’re afraid of it.

GraceGH,

Power? Control? Indoctrination and lack of critical thinking skills to escape it? Some kind of latent fear where they think if they don’t come out on top someone will, treating life as a zero sum game? There’s lots of potential reasons for people to act this way but it probably depends on the individual. I’m not comfortable painting with a super wide brush here because its dehumanizing, and these people are human. Reprehensible? Perhaps, but still human.

We can wax philosophic about why anyone does the things they do, but in the end it doesn’t matter why they do what they do, it matters what they do and what actions we can take to try and improve our own lives and the lives of the people we care about.

GraceGH,

i am pro subaru sanbar and everyone will know it

GraceGH,

There’s potentially a bot that can post weekly currently airing anime episode discussion threads, but it’d be good to know what shows people are watching this season. The rest of the community would drown if we posted a thread for every show that’s currently airing, so that’ll be a problem that needs solving. I’ll look into that bot in the meantime!

Taliban Endorses Twitter Over Threads (www.vice.com)

Anas Haqqani, a Taliban thinker with family ties to the leadership, has endorsed Twitter over the Facebook-owned Threads. He said Twitter has more freedom of speech and credibility than other platforms. The Taliban likes Twitter’s lax moderation policies which allow them to spread their message. Facebook and TikTok ban the...

GraceGH,

far right group advocates for website that caters to far right groups

not even remotely a surprise to me, beyond I guess the fact that the taliban would have said anything at all about it

GraceGH,

Jesus Christ, we really do already live in hell don’t we

GraceGH,

When Linux gaming reaches 100 percent parity with windows, I’ll probably switch. Until then I can’t really justify it for my home PC. Give it 5 years or so, I’ve heard good things about… proton, i think it was called?

GraceGH,

Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint is a great read, I ought to catch up. Eleceed, Weak Hero, and Lookism are all decent if its the sort of thing you like to read. You definitely can just pick one and read it and you’ll have an alright idea if you’ll enjoy the other two. I liked Legendary Moonlight Sculptor quite a bit but that does come with the asterisk that i’m isekai trash and love eating garbage if the garbage has stats that go up on it

GraceGH,

Sweet Home rules and needs more rep!

GraceGH,

Baby Steps is a really good Tennis manga, not sure if there was an anime adaption or if it was good or not. I’m a big fan of Yowamushi Pedal, which might be more well known for its in universe anime “Love Hime”'s fake OP.

What Summer 2023 shows are you all looking forward to?

Having moved off of reddit mostly I’m finding it hard to keep tabs on what seasonal shows are worth the effort, what shows are y’all planning on watching/most looking forward to? The stuff I’m excited for this year (with the exception of JJK and Mushoku Tensei) all come out later this year so I’m kind of in a holding...

GraceGH,

JJK is a no brainer here, other than that i’m looking forward to more Mataraku Maou-Sama and Bungou Stray Dogs. I have no self control, so I’ll also be watching every single bad isekai this season. Helck is crazy good as a manga but IDK if the anime will go for long enough to get into the interesting parts of it, so i’ll chalk that down as a “maybe when i hear how other people like it 6 episodes in”.

this time around the bad isekai looks to be “jitsu wa ore, saikyou da”, “Level 1 dakedo Unique Skill”, “The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior” for which i went with the english title because its long as hell, and of course the vending machine anime where the guy gets reincarnated as a vending machine.

GraceGH,

I'd start with a car, probably something cheap like a 2022 honda civic or ford focus or something. Then i'd pay an accountant of some kind to tell me where to invest it so I could never work again. My guess would be it'd be mostly in like, a 401k or an ETF or something. I'd go out of my way not to take money out of the big sum, the interest should be enough to live off of alone.

What's your favorite Pokemon?

I know Sylveon is my pfp, but Espeon is my actual favorite. I started with the originals, so initially Eevee was something you only got one of if you didn't trade. That made it special, and of course it was cute as a button, so I always tried to get one regardless of the game. Needless to say, I was super excited to find out you...

GraceGH,

I'll go with my favorite team, because there's no way I could ever just pick one.

Blaziken, who journeyed with me from ruby to pearl to white(shortly, i didn't actually play this one), to XY, they'll always have a place in my heart.

Then, Aron, Plusle and Minun, Sylveon, and Talonflame!

Honorable mentions to Mimikyu and Shuppet.

GraceGH,

The regret rate for knee surgery is higher than the regret rate for GRS. Its always just been a transphobic talking point they don't actually believe in used as a cudgel to restrict our rights.

GraceGH,

Frankly, it was a mistake to ever consider the Supreme Court apolitical to begin with. Nobody is above politics, pretending not to play the game doesn't mean they weren't doing it. The Supreme Court needs to change, whether its through term limits or making them democratically elected.

GraceGH,

It's dead for me right now. I'll miss her.

GraceGH,

Honestly? Yes, kinda. Ancestry is a lot more a cultural phenomenon than a genetic one.

GraceGH,

There wasn't a place in the application to write extra notes, so I'll slap em here.

I'd be willing to moderate the anime community but I wouldn't want to be head mod, primarily because I don't want to be responsible for the community guidelines. I think it'd be very nice to have a community that actually moderates transphobic slur usage in the anime community, but this is a touchy subject in the anime community for some reason. I prefer to have someone else to defer to on these kinds of decisions though, because I feel like I can be pretty uptight about stuff.

::: spoiler spoiler i mean the word "trap" to be clear. the origin of the term is an old 4chan meme with admiral ackbar saying "its a trap", referring to male characters who dress in fem clothes. It implies that the only goal of crossdressing is to "trap" men into dating other men. I hope I don't have to elaborate any more on why that's a bad thing or how specifically its transphobic (or, at best, toxic to cis/straight crossdressers). :::

GraceGH,

I just finished Sakuna: of Rice and Ruin.

Its one of the best farming games I've ever played, but it's also like... a real ass simulation game. You don't get to grow whatever you want, you will grow rice and you'll either like it or leave. Kept your paddy's water level too high? Mold. Didn't get rid of pests? Disease. Didn't keep enough water in on a hot day? Uh oh, water evaporated and now your rice is under watered. If the waters too cold it won't absorb nutrients right.

It's also 50 percent a action rpg platformer, but don't think you can get around doing the bare minimum in the farming just to play it: your stats are directly reliant on how good you rice farm. No level grinding through combat.

I really enjoyed it but I'm still not sure who the target demographic for this game was. How big is the overlap between "traditional rice farmers" and "action rpg enjoyers"? At any rate, I high key reccomend it if you think you could be interested in rice farming whatsoever, because the story is great too.

GraceGH,

So that's why RF5 is so janky? Don't get me wrong i'm playing it right now and deeply enjoying it, especially getting to see Doug and Margaret kicking around town again, but I have so many issues with this game lol.

The camera lags when you rotate 360 degrees around your character, sometimes the rocks that spawn on your field will be totally invisible until you save and reset, preventing you from tilling certain areas. I'm having some weird lighting issues too but that doesn't bother me really.

On the bright side, they give you a lot of farming room quite fast if you play through the dungeons, and they finally made it possible to be a lesbian! How cruel fate is that allowed me to not get married to Margaret in RF4... For the record, I ended up with Vishnal.

GraceGH,

It's a lot more forgiving than I make it sound, getting disease usually just means your stats go up less. Just for the love of god don't leave it all to Tauemon, he's wise beyond his years but he is not good at executing on that knowledge. I recommend holding off on looking up an optimal rice farming guide until you're to the point where you can't progress at all anymore, which for me was before the final boss.

Also, there's an easy difficulty for both farming and combat individually (and that you can select at any time), so if you'd rather focus on one or the other you can!

GraceGH,

You're right. I think a lot of people who didn't grow up right at the cusp of the internet weren't actually taught any internet safety.

Rule 1: never tell anyone your ASL, especially location.

Rule 2: No personally identifying details. If you could get doxxed using this information you shouldn't be putting it online.

Rule 3: Runescape will never ask you for your password
