GregorGizeh,

Yeah i only heard it called that ironically or as an in joke

GregorGizeh,

Last I checked the overall reviews were already back in “mostly positive” territory

GregorGizeh,

And it can’t be changed? Wow that’s unfortunate

Speaking of which, I have been fiddling around with the widget and now it is gone completely… Any idea how to get at least this one back?

GregorGizeh,

💪

GregorGizeh,

Thanks, found it. At least I have this one back

I dont want to defend Sony, but the big issue here was the fact that it was not required at first and sold in regions where psn is not available.

If they want to release future titles on PC with a psn requirement that’s their business, as long as they do it in the proper regions and with the explicit and consistent requirement. They must make it clearly known to the customer beforehand.

I don’t have to like it and i certainly won’t buy any game with that requirement, but they corrected this fuckup and I can continue to enjoy this product I bought, free of psn.

GregorGizeh,

Plenty of third party accounts are needed for steam purchases, that alone isnt news worthy or even really objectionable at this point. And were it just for that we would have never gotten sony to back down, or even close to this amount of outrage.

What made this protest succeed are the accidental sales outside the psn regions, and the attempt to make psn mandatory retroactively.

If I may ask, what are you so mad about? We got what we wanted, a purchase we made to remain as it is. I won’t be buying their products in the future if psn is required, but i also dont care about their shitty business as long as it doesn’t affect me. And we averted that.

GregorGizeh,

It seems insane to me that Americans use pesticides on their own garden and lawn. Do you not walk on there? have your kids and pets play outside? What are you even trying to kill with the poison?

GregorGizeh,

The reason steam has managed to remain consistently relevant and beloved by its users is for sure the fact that it is not a public company, but owned by nerds and the people working there. Makes for a great employee retention, and without being hounded by shareholders they can operate properly and with long term plans.

Change your Steam review

I’m a PS5 player, so I can’t make an impact, but if you did write a negative review (thank you, you made this happen ❤️) please consider taking the time to change it! This was clearly not AH decision and the game deserves an accurate review, it’s easily one of the best games I’ve ever played and definitely the best...

GregorGizeh,

Definitely will do that, the game itself is still very fun and not deserving of the bad ratings.

And with Sony finally having gotten the message (for the time being at least) they faced their mistake and were willing to make up for it, which doesn’t happen too often these days. And I do appreciate that.

GregorGizeh,

It is still a corporation. Think of them like sauron in lotr, a sort of evil giant you can successfully defy with concerted effort, but you can’t really defeat them without throwing the ring into mount doom (destroying capitalism and intellectual property in this case).

GregorGizeh,

The timeline is this:

  • game gets launched with psn requirement
  • huge demand and server load make linking psn for PC players buggy and difficult
  • psn requirements are disabled “temporarily” around that time to ease the load
  • the game becomes even more successful, tens of thousands of players buy and install it, without ever being prompted to make a psn account
  • Sony has wording in their PC requirements that said linking to psn is optional for PC users
  • now, months later, Sony decides they want more psn users for their metrics, and make a psn account mandatory retroactively
  • huge amounts of players feel duped out of their product, especially those from regions steam serves, but Sony doesn’t, because they will essentially lose access to their product completely. Others are mistrustful of Sony’s data protection record, they got hacked with disturbing frequency over the years, and dont want to give them their data on principle, especially with the knowledge that the game ran perfectly fine for months without psn
  • Players are up in arms, barraging the arrowhead (who were forced by Sony to do this) community managers with hate
  • players review bomb the absolute shit out of the game on steam, causing it to go from mostly positive to mixed over the course of a day
  • Sony half heartedly rolls back the requirement after a weekend of huge community backlash, poor press coverage, and depressed arrowhead CEO tweets
GregorGizeh,

I thought the rootkit on my computer was for that.

GregorGizeh,

Certainly, though I suspect the sales outside their psn market were a significant factor in making them reconsider now. They likely didn’t want to deal with the legal fallout of essentially arbitrarily taking away the product the customers already paid for, and played with. If it weren’t for that I bet Sony would have just pushed on through, bad reviews be damned

Is there anything stopping AH from Re-releasing a fork of HD2 as HD3 and putting it on Steam without the PSN requirement?

Main question in title. It sounded like the majority platform for the game is PC. What’s stopping the devs from just re-releasing the game on PC without Sony as the publisher? Can the devs just abandon ship and start fresh, but without Sony?

GregorGizeh,

That is how its generally done yes, especially when there is such a large power imbalance between the two parties (one being a multinational corporate giant and the other a mid sized studio with only average releases so far). Maybe they even signed a deal for hd3 with them in advance as well

GregorGizeh, (edited )

Commercial musicians caring about their sales. Why is that surprising? It is time we stop thinking of every celebrity as a good person, they are completely average for the most part. Including casual indifference to things that are not their problems.
