I filed a FOIA to the FBI to disclose Sabus Twitter DMs from his time as an FBI sting operation a while ago (https://www.muckrock.com/foi/united-states-of-america-10/twitter-dm-history-of-hector-monsegur-sabu-with-halvarflake-137919/?), but the reply was "can't confirm nor deny existence". Clearly the FBI must've had these records (they reviewed and monitored Sabus comms).

Is there a way to appeal?

I heard something today that is reasonably profound in analyzing communication failures:

Having thought something isn't having said something. Having said something isn't being heard. Being heard isn't being understood. Being understood isn't agreement. Agreement isn't change. Change isn't permanent change.

Keeping this list of possible failure points in mind is helpful in analyzing communication failures.

Dear Fediverse, I am interested in how the below toy airplanes are manufactured. The material looks as if styrofoam was compressed in a heated mould; the material is less brittle than straight EPS, and seems compression-resistant.

Does anyone know anything? :-)

I thought it’d be funny to take a $100 Costco beginner surfboard out in an 8ft shorebreak. It was indeed extremely funny.

There's not much to love about FRA airport but the mechanical flight table simultaneously taps into my childhood emotion of "daddy is coming home" and young adult "let's see the world".

Today is my last day at Elastic. I'll take an extended break and focus on rest, family, health, writing, a bit of startup mentoring/investing, and some research - at least for a while.

I'm thankful for my great colleagues and my leadership at Elastic - y'all are stellar, even if I was often grumbly about some technical or architectural issues. ...

I'll also miss the ex-optimyze team a lot; you were the best team anyone doing technically sophisticated work could wish for - great individuals, but in sum greater than the parts. I think the future for the tech we built is bright, particularly in light of the recent Otel events :)

Elastic has filed a ticket to donate the eBPF based profiling agent that used to be called Prodfiler to OpenTelemetry. I am extremely psyched!!!

Strange to see job cuts in both finance and tech, while overall GDP growth looks healthy.

There's a German series of short stories where the villain is a McKinsey-alumni penguin that wants to turn the entire world into one big airport mall, and the loss of post-security entire hams feels like the villain progressed.

I don't think I've fully internalized yet what it means that I can vertically scale to 1m+ iops these days.

And the fact that essentially no RDBMs allows me to get close to hitting that tells me the rest of the industry hasn't either.

Advertisement, but of the unpaid type: If you're a parent of a kid approaching 4-5, and you have a lot of cardboard (from stuff like Amazon deliveries or random other sources) -- buy https://make.do. It's pretty damn versatile, and offers a lot of playtime for money.

Over on the bird site, an account called @mbateman wrote about agency in education, and it struck a chord:

"Running teacher training about agency this week.
Nothing is more important than agency. But most people get agency wrong, especially educators who lean progressive.
Some haphazard calibrations:
Traditional education kills agency by removing choice and interest. ...

I didn't always admire young GeoHot, but watching this interview was a lot of fun, and he has clearly matured a lot.

Or so I thought, until the last 30 seconds, which are pretty bonkers, but that doesn't devalue the stuff before 🙂

I have disagreed with a lot of Friedman's op-eds and positions in the past, but this op-ed on Gaza is spot-on:

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/29/opinion/israel-hamas-war.html

It also clearly spells out that Bibi's interests and both the strategic interests of Israel and the US are on collision course. I'd go further: The interests of the entire rules-based order are harmed by Bibi's actions.
