I have a child's toy where I accidentally tore two wires off of their solder balls.

What tools do I need to fix this? I suspect something to heat up the solder and then reattach? Is a small soldering iron enough or do I need some sort of hot air gun?

@malwaretech wait. EDRs using Usermode hooks are still a thing? I thought Usermode hooks went out of style in 2002?

This is a fucking crazy team. I have worked with some teams! Michael and Tracy's EnterAct team, Al's Secure Networks team, Dug Song's Arbor team, Jeremy and Dave and my Matasano team; even when things were rough, I got to work with Erin and Patrick at Starfighter. I feel like I have a well-calibrated team-o-meter. This team is nuts. I get why people work at "startup" startups like this. https://fly.io/about

Everybody talks about how powerful LLMs are, but neither Bard nor ChatGPT seem to come close to solving the following (easy) problem:

Given a stock portfolio with an annual return of r=5%, and the choice of either paying 30% tax on the portfolio gains each year, or paying 24% tax on the capital gains component of whatever you withdraw after 10 years, what is the actual annual return for both portfolios after 10 years?

It's been 25 months since my mother was last awake and alive, and 23 months since her death. I am spending the last two nights in her flat before the remaining content of it is thrown out.

It's a very strange feeling. She lived for memories, and her flat has an overwhelming quantity of photos in it. Boxes and boxes. It's strange to throw that out.

I miss her, a bit for myself but much more for her extreme love of children that my kids will not experience. And I miss the worldview I had ...

Why a Palestinian state is the best security guarantee for Israel - https://on.ft.com/3sNvn8x via @ftworldnews

"One thing is clear: all my interlocutors in the Arab world have accepted Israel’s existence and want to engage with it. They recognise the immense opportunity that lies in a peaceful neighbourhood, cross-border co-operation and Israel’s potential role as a regional economic driver. But all agree that Arab-Israeli co-operation hinges upon resolving the Palestinian question."

A thread on p(doom) from a fundamentalist Bayesian point of view: If you have read (and understood) De Finetti, you understand that in settings where you don't have repeatable experiments, you are not in a frequentist setting, so something like a "true, objective" probability does not exist. The only thing that exists are subjective degrees of belief, expressed by betting odds. It's clear that these odds are entangled with individuals utility function for money, but ...

After 10 days of having sick kids (first COVID, then likely mycoplasma pneumoniae), and being sick myself (COVID) I could really do with a stretch of healthy kids and some time without a kid on top of me.

The only p(doom) that can sensibly be discussed is p(doom | object), namely the probability that object contains a sufficiently powerful ARM core to run Doom.

4 year old got to pick a toy at the toy store after all the doctor stuff. I'd braced for some stupid plastic Paw Patrol vehicle.

He chose a magnifying glass attached to a box for watching insects and plants.

He's been running around the garden filling it with stuff. I am moved.

COVID is mild for kids, they claim, like the flu, they say.

What flu has a rudely healthy 4 year old taking corticosteroids to reduce inflammation?

I am angry with the discrepancy between the actual dangers of Covid and the way we act cavalierly about it.

I joked in the past that the AI race looks like a drunk bar fight where the VCs and Clouds keep serving Vodka - don't get in expecting to win, only join if you like Vodka and punches.

Hadn't expected the biggest brawler to sever his left arm to make a point.

So. Random.
