@nyrath Why put a Dyson swarm at 1 AU and then pay extra for solar concentration for higher efficiencies?
Just pave Mercury's orbit in solar panels.

Darn me for guestimating.
Did the calculation for a ship the mass of the shuttle orbiter being pulled by a megameter diameter starchute of that same mass again (don't ask what the starchute is made of) at 1G and the result is 5/6ths of sunshine.
Ooh, what a scary death beam that is. It'll give you skin cancer if you lie in it too long.

So far my ship is a mirror surface cylinder with a rounded bottom and pointed nose that has bottom to top:
Fission reactor surrounded by ion engines
Storage tanks
Living area with radiator wings that deploy to the sides (with mirrors to protect radiators against the lasers from below)
dorsal airlock that connects to the living area, the outside and the capsule on top
Command/Escape capsule with seating for one.
And on the top the megameter diameter starchute and its rigging.

@nyrath Lots of half breeds in Scifi & fantasy, but let's take it a step further.
Imagine a man who inherits a human Y chromosome from his father and human mitochondria from his mother.
He would then be a Neanderthal of course.

Eyeballing from @nyrath's table, my heroine hops in her butterfly ship and gets pushed at 1G by her home Dyson swarm for a year, then flips around and gets slowed at the same rate by the destination for a year and travels 1 ly. Doubling the trip time makes that almost 6 ly. https://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/slowerlight3.php#relcalc

@nyrath What's the proper size for the hero ship in a movie, TV series or RPG?
99% of the crew of the Enterprise seem to do nothing ever, not even react to the half-human.
In the three Star Wars movies the Millennium Falcon seems more a setting for interludes rather than part of the plot. As soon as the rookie gets the keys to an X-wing he's outta there. (In diapers?)
Traveller has two types of ships, depending on the types of missions the gamers are in to. With few if any NPC crewmembers.

@nyrath The reason the Enterprise would plunge into the planet within a few minutes of losing power is that they were using the engines to hover directly overhead to minimize terrain interference with line of sight communications.
It's not like Kirk had to pay for the antimatter himself.

@nyrath please excuse my raining on your childhood, but Star Wars is more Medieval than LOTR is.
The wandering knights drink at the taverns, but they stay the night in the homes of the local nobility and so on.

The first rule of Space Vikings is that ships are faster than information.
Otherwise you're battling not raiding.

Apply the Homestead Act to the Asteroid Belt.
Don't require any improvements, simply have a living human being reside on any rock up to a quarter km in radius (160 acres, yo!) for five Earth years to claim it as their property.

@nyrath The spaceship design of a long cylinder with a rocket at the bottom makes perfect sense if you're building with a material that is much stronger under compression than tension, such as concrete.

@isaackuo In 2040 the next gen space telescope has a 99% result that a planet 12ly away has pond scum.
When are the first humans sent to examine this?

Hcobb, to random
@Hcobb@spacey.space avatar

@isaackuo @nyrath Potential solution to lightweight decoy issue:
Take my jumprope design of engine and crew spinning at the ends of a cable up a dimension.
The "ship" is based on a spiderweb layout with the total mass clear, but not which nodes are what mass. The web of cables is too hard of a target to hit at a distance and can pump coolant between nodes.

@isaackuo If you wanna keep physics and still invade then your invasion fleet is inbound at quite a clip.
Hence your best power source / engine / weapons power comes from mag coils against the local stellar wind. Zig zag against the magnetic winds to evade defender's fire.

@isaackuo, a tiny K2 to K3 question.
If one assumes that any smart kids on the block will pave their stars with Dyson swarms to use all of that "free" energy, then what keeps them from yeeting some of their space habs to other stars with a tiny fraction of their full power? I.e. what's the limit to their growth here?

@nyrath Given how Spacetime looks more and more emergent from quantum rather than the screen that quantum is projected onto, does this open up FTL by quantum rules that don't respect classical causality?

@nyrath the one thing that kept me up at night was the pondering of how fine the balance must be for a world that has both dry continents and wet oceans WRT oceans of the mantle, etc.
Then I remembered that Sol system has two of these so it ain't that uncommon. (Q2: Does Titan have plate tectonics?)
