I remember being pretty young and asking my parents—is this it? We go to school every day and then we get a job and go to work every day and this is our lives, forever? Just living each day according to someone else’s schedule, at someone else’s command? This is life?

And they were pretty flummoxed. Yeah, they said, this is life. What did you expect? This is what you do and then you die.

These are the same people who showed my Koyaanisqatsi when I was like six and encouraged me to internalize its message that capitalist modernity is catastrophically, irrevocably broken and unsustainable.

And I just think…a lot of people hold pretty good beliefs in the abstract but it doesn’t occur to them to live as if they were actually true.

It is indeed a lot easier to recognize the problem than to solve it. I’ve just never been able to come to terms with it.

@hosford42

No, my parents were pretty confused at the suggestion that life could be any other way and at my frustration with the status quo. “This is just the way things are!”

I encourage my kids to see things as they are, and to nurture that sense of frisson they experience.

I mean, I’m as guilty as them of “being right but not revolting.” I just never internalized that this was good. I’m not saying I’m better than them.

Even if any of these countries were meaningfully socialist—they’re not and they weren’t—the existence of one bad thing does not excuse the existence of another bad thing. A double-shit sandwich doesn’t somehow make a shit sandwich any more palatable.

Capitalism was not an attempt to escape feudalism. Feudalism was not an attempt to guard against raiders. Agriculture was not developed to hedge against unpredictability.

There’s no useful sense by which we might compare nature to a boss in the context of this conversation.

I believe it is the former, but even that is a slap in the face to every American who isn’t rich who has been incarcerated or otherwise ruined because they could not pay a bond set by a judge.

Anarchist mufos and I have a dangerous, direct action conversation about composting, complete with anarcho-composto-primitivism, luxury anarchist space worm communism, cross-species mutual aid etc. All compost is biological.

HeavenlyPossum,

@richpuchalsky

Every time I open my luxury anarchist space worm communism bin and see all my little wormies squirming around, I like to imagine them thinking “we live in food!” to themselves all the time. Like damn we got it good.

I take such immense satisfaction from composting.

From the earth, to the earth.

HeavenlyPossum,
@HeavenlyPossum@kolektiva.social avatar

@RD4Anarchy

Yeah! I splurged on a subpod. It’s basically a plastic bin with a lid, two chambers side-by-side, and perforations in the sides. You either bury it or, like I did, build a sort of raised garden bed around the side so only the lid is visible. Then you just start adding kitchen scraps—veggies, breads, etc.

Ordered some compost worms, let them loose in the scraps, and basically the thing runs itself. The worms can come and go into the soil through the perforations as they please and keep coming back to eat. I have so many now—they’re very happy—along with pillbugs, slugs, and snails all happily turning the scraps into compost. Just have to manage the moisture levels, which means adding dry carbon like scrap paper and cardboard shreds.

Hardest part is getting the finished compost out without kidnapping a whole bunch of worms.

HeavenlyPossum,
@HeavenlyPossum@kolektiva.social avatar

@RD4Anarchy

I’ve had it for about a full year now. It takes a little while to get it going, and I didn’t want to bother them over the winter, so I didn’t pull any compost out for a long while. But they just keep eating and eating. The best part is not throwing my kitchen scraps in the garbage.

HeavenlyPossum,
@HeavenlyPossum@kolektiva.social avatar

@RD4Anarchy @richpuchalsky

That’ll do too. I have more organic waste than my worms can comfortably handle so overflow goes in a regular compost heap.

HeavenlyPossum,
@HeavenlyPossum@kolektiva.social avatar

@neonsnake @violetmadder @richpuchalsky @RD4Anarchy

An important trick with compost is to not let it get too wet, or it turns to muck and the aerobic bacteria drown. That’s the difference between good rich humus and stinky rotten swamp mud.

Since kitchen scraps are usually full of moisture, you can balance them out with dry carbon (like scrap paper) or dry tree leaves from the previous autumn.

In the past year one of the main things I have learned is that rural America is way more fucked up than I ever perceived as a "city guy."

I once went to a grocery store in the West Virginia pan handle and there was one aisle devoted entirely to soda—just soda—and no produce at all.

Not that long ago, I posted that I although I am an atheist, I am personally uncomfortable trying to push atheism on anyone. It doesn’t bother me if other people have found ideas that help get them through a life that is often confusing, scary, and hard.

Now, this triggered a bunch of atheism bros, who tried to convince me that this was a grave mistake and that society desperately needs more atheism bros to save people from their pathetically comforting delusions.

I blocked a bunch of them, because they lived up to everything that made me uncomfortable about proselytizing atheism and didn’t respect boundaries.

I don’t regret that at all, but something about that experience has been niggling at my brain.

HeavenlyPossum,
@HeavenlyPossum@kolektiva.social avatar

@CedarTea

It’s too hegemonic for a lot of people to look past that experience, I expect. But there’s nothing intrinsic about any set of religious beliefs that must inevitably produce any particular social outcome. There are revolutionary egalitarian Christians who perform mutual aid and there are theocratic reactionary Christians who commit terrible abuse.

I am intrigued by paganism but wouldn’t know the first place to start.

HeavenlyPossum,
@HeavenlyPossum@kolektiva.social avatar

@ophiocephalic

The thing that always trips me up is how little we know about actual historical pagan beliefs, how much was lost, and I overthink and fret about just putting together a pastiche.

I want more structure than just my instinctual feelings but not by cobbling together bits and pieces. Does that make sense? Or tell me I’m stupidly overthinking.

HeavenlyPossum,

Thanks for walking me through this a bit, I really appreciate it.

REMEMBER: on mastodon, you can hide boosts from individual accounts using the three dots menu on a profile page!!!

since this is my first time boosting a considerable amount of mutual aid posts since i gained like +100 followers because of fedipact lol
