World Central Kitchen is devastated to confirm seven members of our team have been killed in an IDF strike in Gaza.

Despite coordinating movements with the IDF, the convoy was hit

This is not only an attack against WCK, this is an attack on humanitarian organizations showing up in the most dire of situations where food is being used as a weapon of war. This is unforgivable

The seven killed are from Australia, Poland, UK, US, Canada, and Palestine.

Israel is going to say "whoopsie, sorry" about the WCK atrocity, but it will accomplish what they set out to do, which is discourage international aid orgs from working in Gaza. it's an implicit future death threat directed at anyone who would dare extend help to the starving people of Gaza. war crime. collective punishment. ethnic cleansing. https://wck.org/news/gaza-team-update

It's hard to take Biden's "concerns" about Israel's actions in Gaza seriously when he keeps sending them billions in weapons and his spokespeople are like, "Fuck you, we don't care."

There is essentially zero acknowledgement by mainstream and centrist Democrats that many of their policies, such as their zealous support for cops no matter who gets hurt, has made things objectively worse for a lot of people, particularly the people they expect votes from, nor do they give any indication of wanting to change.

The IDF has killed seven World Central Kitchen aid workers traveling in a convoy of three vehicles. World Central Kitchen aid workers are clearly identified by their clothing and their vehicles always contain highly visible large logos. This isn't imo a mistake. They were targeted.

This is a genocide by intentional starvation.

The seven killed are from Australia, Poland, UK, a dual citizen of the U.S. and Canada, and Palestine.

Tomorrow, I'm making phone calls to my federal representatives asking them to end our complicity in Israel's war crimes and end all arms shipments.

Today, US supplied arms likely killed a US citizen.

Infoseepage,

@mikewaghorne The US has ~600 rear cargo door heavy lift aircraft like C-130s & C-17s. We've never used more than 4 of them on a single day for the airdrop operation and never dropped more than 50,000 meals. We've never flown more than a single flight a day despite the airbase in Jordan being ~140 miles away.

We're also dropping MREs instead of Humanitarian Daily Rations, which is bad for a number of reasons.

We're sending Israel an endless stream of bombs and next to no food for Gaza.

It's extremely obvious that the IDF deliberately murdered aid workers. It's so obvious that I have to think the IDF is making a point of making it obvious.

Reading the official explanation it sounds the only "targeting mistake" was the IDF not realizing that 3 of the people being targeted were legally human

Other than that this is indistinguishable from all the other routine targeting of aid and medical workers Israel has been doing every day all along

I’ve spent more energy than I would have liked over the past few days responding to someone here who was stanning for China, bigging up the Belt & Road initiative as a fraternal and “socialist” gift bestowed out of boundless generosity, and ascribing Han anti-Blackness to the wicked Europeans. Let’s all be crystal clear, though, that in its obliteration of Tibetan culture, in its attempted physical erasure of the Uyghur people, in its own deep, organic racism, China is an empire like any other.

And what I will never understand, if I live to be one thousand years old, is why some people, out of a perfectly justified desire to hold “the West” or “the global North” or NATO or the United States up to critique, wind up embracing one of the planet’s other bloodthirsty, extractive empires, and rationalizing away its vile deeds. This isn’t a binary choice, you know? You can do better than being a useful idiot for a power that cares nothing for your fate. Putin-senpai will never notice you.

Here's an idea why people don't like Biden and think he made the economy worse.

Americans got stimulus, child & other checks from the govt. Then under Biden they weren't.

Never mind Biden gave the checks & Republicans stopped them. THAT is a lot to expect voters to understand.

Dems should have continued the checks because they made people's lives better.

Biden should campaign on starting them back up.

Reza Aslan argues that historical Jesus is best understood as a poor, revolutionary Jew who really wanted brutal Roman occupiers (and their Jewish collaborators) the fuck out of Israel. Aslan says “Jesus was a Jew preaching Judaism to other Jews. His was a Jewish mission, one concerned exclusively with the fate of his fellow Jews.”

Aslan argues that when Jesus referred to the Kingdom of God he wanted to usher in, he was referring to a Jewish Israel free of Roman rule

HeavenlyPossum,
@HeavenlyPossum@kolektiva.social avatar

@seachanger

I haven’t read Reza Aslan’s book, but it sounds like it’s in the same vein as Michael Hudson’s work situation Jesus in the historical context of Bronze Age concepts about economic justice.

Hudson argues that the jubilee—the official erasure of debts and freeing of slaves—was the foundational pillar of Brone Age economies in the near East. The Iron Age Israelites continued this tradition by encoding it as a religious obligation on all Jews, the 50-year jubilee cycle.

Jesus, he argued, was revolting to restore this tradition that had been suppressed by the Romans and their local allies. The “year of the lord” he wanted to restore was the jubilee year. And, for that, the Romans crucified him.

@tomstoneham There's an old joke:

A Saudi prince visits a UK factory to buy drilling tools. At lunch the sirens blow and the workers stream through the gates.

"Look, your slaves are escaping!" says the prince. The factory owner says not to worry.

After 42 minutes the sirens blow again and people return to the factory.

"So how many drills will you be buying?" asks the factory owner at the end of the day.

"Sod the drills, get me three dozen of those sirens," replies the prince.

The AP has found that the number of deaths caused by the police in the US is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than thought because they're not always reported as being "officer-involved."

The investigation found that between 2012 and 2021, more than a thousand people died after police use physical force that was not intended to be lethal. That includes batons, stun guns, physical restraints, and chemical agents. The oldest victim was 95 and the youngest 15.

Only 28 of the officers were charged.

The Police role was only cited in about half of the cases, meaning that many more Americans have died at the hands of the police than was previously known.

There's a lot that's alarming in this article, but perhaps the most alarming part is the NYC spokesperson assering that the problem can be fixed via upgrades:

It seems to bear repeating: chatbots based on large language models are designed to make shit up. This isn't a fixable bug. It's a fundamental mismatch between tech and task.

Also, it's worth noting that RAG (retrieval augmented generation) doesn't fix the problem. See those nice links into NYC web pages? Not stopping the system from making shit up. (Second column is chatbot response, third is journalist's report on the actual facts.)

Hey, folks. Your friendly neighbourhood rat here. The month is slowly coming to close and I'm in a pretty bad financial situation. It's not terrible, but it could be much better and I'm at risk of being flat out broke soon enough.

And to avoid that, I require your aid. You know, boy's gotta eat.
So if you have anything to spare, please consider donating it to me on:

https://ko-fi.com/szczursky
paypal: radnow@tutanota.com

And what made me broke in the first place?
I had trouble with my landlord and a laundry machine, it took significant part of my monthly budget. And then I was forced to undergo a surgery and therapy of my finger that I had previously smashed (accidentally) with a glass bottle, making the finger nail fall off. And it's not so bad, just a little painful. The problem was when the fingernail started rapidly rupturing into my skin, causing risk of infection and a severe pain. I had no choice but to fix it, but it literally cost me 1/2 of my budget including rent to accomplish and we're not done. These are the main factors of why I'm broke this month.

If you decide to help me, thank you so much. I appreciate that and I hope you have a great day.

@jack_of_all_lanterns@kolektiva.social avatar

I've seen so many people argue that anarchists don't actually know what the state is and that we all secretly want one but would just call it the Commune or something. And sure, we all know some Breadtube ppl like that, but they're embarrassingly disconnected from most irl anarchists.

It's true that not everyone's going to give you the same definition of the state, but this is more due to their being a lot of ways to describe an actually existing thing than a lack of coherence imo. If someone asks you to define a tree, you might get a lot of different definitions but that doesn't mean trees don't exist. It's just that it's a lot easier for me to take you outside and point one out to you.

A state is a predatory gang separate from society and governing it from above. All states engage in class war because the representatives and officials of all states have a vested interest in maintaining their rule, and that interest is in direct conflict with their subjects. All states are violent because their position as top dog in society requires punishing insubordination, fighting off competitors, and robbing their subjects for resources.

Now obviously opposing states is not the full extent of anarchist politics. Bloody civil war, polycentric feudalism, majoritarian direct democracy, interpersonal domination and abuse, localized micro-nationalism, all of these are the enemies of anarchy. This doesn't make the concept of a state less useful though.

But then again, it's pretty hard to defend states if you talk about them in the frank terms that anarchists do, so maybe its easier to argue the whole concept is nonsense.

AdrianRiskin, to random
@AdrianRiskin@kolektiva.social avatar

"The notion that there is a clear division between state forces and crime groups—that corruption and collaboration are the work of a few bad apples—is a hegemonic idea promoted by nation-states and the mainstream media. Undoing this binary means learning from the people whose lives have been directly affected by armed groups whose activity is carried out with impunity. Impunity is not the result of a weak or deficient state, but rather it is actively provided to the gamut of armed groups who commit crimes and acts of terror against citizens, migrants, and the poor. The provision of impunity to armed actors who are politically aligned with capitalism is part of a modern nation state’s raison d’etre."
