As a vi user, I hope something moderately annoying happens on the regular to whoever put the Zz key (hibernate) next to ESC.

The more time I spend on LinkedIn, the less I feel motivated to behave like a "professional".

@ljrk I don't really post anything there, I just browse. It just doesn't feel like a space where I want to express myself.

Thus the posting here!

Cycled 25km today, felt good. This is all trending in the right direction.

More NewJob updates: 2 months in, I'm now actively mentoring other members of my team.

Passed my 6-week review with flying colors. Shipping golang and Java, tweaking K8s and Terraform configs. Also, importantly, starting to suck a bit less at the pool table.

Word of my Advanced Age is getting out, as is word of my Impending Fatherhood and Recent Engagement. And I'm becoming more vocal about my politics...

Settling in, I thinks.

I am trying multi-focal contact lenses today!

How do they even work? I think each lense is -3.5 in the middle, and then a ring around which is only -1.75? And somehow the eye & brain make sense of it all. Magic!

I don't hate them. I also don't love them?

It's a new type of of not-quite-perfect but way-better-than-nothing.

I think the best thing about them is I feel relaxed wearing them. Which is a pretty big deal after eye-strain induced migraines...

HerraBRE,
@HerraBRE@mastodon.xyz avatar

@chidgey I tried that!

The problem (for me) is that I'm likely to be allergic to the hinges of the reading glasses (nickel is everywhere).

So for occasional use, that combo works fine, but for daily work I either need to be without glasses or buy proper ones made of good materials, precisely measured so they don't give me headaches.

SNOW DAY!!!

Driving in the fresh snow is so much fun. Slip! Slide! Swerve! Spray!

So much excitement at 20 km/h.

So NewJob is pretty good, so far!

I've been there just over 2 weeks and I am already making myself useful! Been an animated Rubber Duck for the team, caused my first alert, shipped and reverted some code...

More importantly, I have found and joined the unofficial pool players club and have been a good-natured loser whilst drinking company beer!

Shook hands with the CEO the other day, and then chatted with him at the urinals. Neither of us did any sneaky peeking. I think.

My job title is "Senior Software Engineer."

Which is apt. I've been getting paid to write code longer than some of my colleagues have existed. Definitely senior!

We played "guess my age" at the pool table the other night. I think their initial guess was 32 and they refused to go high enough to actually hit the right number...

But more seriously, I was shown the skills matrix they use for these job titles. It was remarkably sensible, and I think I'll be able to meet expectations pretty quick.

HerraBRE,
@HerraBRE@mastodon.xyz avatar

@Jason_Dodd That is going to be very rare!

Cool tho, what are you working on?

I've been driven off Bluesky by a hateful mob, and I'm kind of second-order sad because I just really wanted that to be different. But it wasn't, it was toxic af.

I think at this point I'm a social media canary. Somehow I just have a quality that invites and exposes peoples' worst sides, and lays bare cracks in local social fabric.

I mean honestly, that was kind of true in person too when I was younger. I just kind of point at contradictions until someone tries to shoot me.

HerraBRE,
@HerraBRE@mastodon.xyz avatar

@quinn @rysiek @pettter Awwwww, no!

I cling to the belief that you can foster a sense of belonging without the outgroup being of any importance, aside from being a source of more potential lovelies to welcome to the circle.

I think focusing on the outgroup the way you describe is exactly how things BECOME toxic, but it's not required.

HerraBRE,
@HerraBRE@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rysiek @quinn @pettter Oh, it's totally the lazy easy path, it's a fave for all the populists and manipulators.

But it's not how you build a healthy, happy community. For that the focus has inwards on the things that make people actually want to belong, as opposed to being afraid not to.

My UK immigration saga is coming to an end!

The visa landed, I have a flight back tomorrow and I have a start date at the new job. It's all coming together!

I'm also very close to delivering milestone #2 on the / NLNet work, so I aim to get that shipped that before I start the new job.

So, how long until ChatGPT and AI image generators etc. implement product placement?

Feels inevitable, considering that the bulk of the industry is ad funded.

I will now helpfully predict that AI is going to both get better and worse in all sorts of exciting ways!

If someone complains back to me about something I myself am complaining about, sometimes I feel compelled to defend and justify the thing I am annoyed with.

This, in itself, is very annoying.

It's far better to implement human complain-chains, where everyone just passes their complaints on to someone increasingly far removed from the source annoyance.

Complain-chains should ideally end with a creative person who can harness the frustration and make art.

Marketers promoting Firefox in 3…2…1… 🤣

> The Google-run proxy can observe the user's IP address but not the websites being visited and the third-party proxy can see the web servers being visited but not the IP address of the visitor. By separating the user's IP address from the user's destination through Google's service, websites and intermediaries cannot (without additional information) link people's IP addresses to their browsing habits to create marketing profiles.

@rysiek @YurkshireLad No, incorrect.

Google provides entry nodes, exit nodes are elsewhere (I think Cloudflare is their main partner).

The sheer volumes involved mean this may actually provide better anonymity than Tor, and it will definitely provide better performance.

The only reason we aren't celebrating is because we don't trust the big companies.

HerraBRE,
@HerraBRE@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rysiek @YurkshireLad They claim to not know the destination.

Maybe they lie, but that is the promise they are making.

HerraBRE,
@HerraBRE@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rysiek @YurkshireLad C'mon, take off the tinfoil hat for a moment.

The how is well understood - onioning. The tech is open source enough for the community to verify the default implementation. Assuming they trojan their binaries... well, I think they would get caught.

The more interesting takeaway, is Google don't feel the IP address info is all that valuable anymore. They are comfortable giving it up, they trust it will hurt their competitors more than it hurts them.

HerraBRE,
@HerraBRE@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rysiek @YurkshireLad They also have a long history of driving most of the major web security improvements (that I love to complain about).

Sorry about the ad-hominem. I disagree with your analysis here, but I've made my points and am happy to drop it now.

“Residents of the eastern part of the city allowed in to collect their belongings - RÚV.is”

Still holding out hope for a best-case scenario of no eruption. https://www.ruv.is/english/2023-11-10-residents-of-the-eastern-part-of-the-city-allowed-in-to-collect-their-belongings-396249

HerraBRE,
@HerraBRE@mastodon.xyz avatar

@baldur Whether this event leads to an eruption or not, I think it's pretty clear that Grindavík may not be viable as a place to live for the next 1-200 years or so.

The scientific consensus as I understand it, is that this is the new normal in those parts. Quakes, stress, evacuations - and eventually, lava.

I'm not sure postponing the inevitable is actually a "best case" scenario. It's a shit situation for the locals either way.

HerraBRE,
@HerraBRE@mastodon.xyz avatar

@baldur I think "best case" looks more like "volcano erupts just far enough away that people get time to remove all their valuables, then the lava comes in and people get to claim insurance and move on."

You can't claim insurance if your house is undamaged but worthless. Then you're just trapped?

But I shouldn't speak for locals. They may well see it differently!
