One of my cyberpunk short stories got picked up by an anarchist fiction zine (en.scrappycapydistro.info)

I hope this is okay - normally when I post here I write up little book reports for cyberpunk stories and movies rather than post my own stuff. But one of my cyberpunk stories (told from the perspective of an AI weapons platform) just went live in a brand new anarchist zine called Harbour en.scrappycapydistro.info/harbour (it’s...

To be honest, I don’t think I plan to do anything else with this project, but I still have the libreoffice document with selectable text and I’m happy to share it if you or anyone wants to use it to make something new.

I’m kinda glad I don’t have time at the moment to get obsessed with a new topic (though it’s lurking in my future now) - this is really cool. I used to mess around with RTLSDR stuff, this looks like it’ll scratch the same itch and possibly be more useful. Meshnets seem like a wonderful solarpunk technology and I really look forward to seeing where this’ll go.

[Art] Cyberpunk City by Artur Sadlos (lemmy.zip)

I know posting cyberpunk artwork is the quickest way to get those precious upvotes, but I don’t like posting random art for no reason. I’d rather find an actual artist’s work that happens to be cyberpunk than some AI-generated thing or someone who spent an hour learning Blender and posted the results. Of course, sometimes...

This is the most elaborate photobash I’ve ever seen. Huge scope but the details fit together so carefully. The layout and colors are excellent

I will admit I wasn’t thrilled to see the ISA, but mostly put it off to the cyberpunk origins of the game (I think Shadow run has a similar region).

I don’t think the Confederacy had anything worth trying again, but I also get that there’s a lot of lore and glamorization around it that’ll mean there’ll always be someone who thinks it’s worth a second try.

I’ve also been only been in a few parts of that region a few times. I know it’s a diverse area with a lot of history and complexity and that opinions are all over the place. I’m skeptical you can discuss/conduct secession in the American south without dragging the lost cause mythos and it’s inherent racism and revisionism along with it. So even if people from all groups were largely in favor of secession, I’m uncertain as to how much confederate branding end up being included, especially in a more solarpunk world. It’s another of those things I don’t feel qualified to write about. I just don’t know the people well enough.

I think what I’d really like is to find a few people from the area with a different vision for what a solarpunk southeast could look like, and to break the sort of Confederacy default attached to the place.

All of that said, I think this is fairly mild and leaves room for changes in future drafts. I’d almost prefer a handwavy ‘the US broke up during the Global Climate Wars’ and we can add to it in future editions but I’m not against what’s here either.

[Anime] Megazone 23 - I'm not sure about this one... (lemmy.zip)

Megazone 23 is a 3-part OVA (each episode being over an hour) made in 1985-89. I’ve seen it included in cyberpunk anime lists as being a classic 80s cyberpunk, along with Cyber City Oedo 808. But I don’t see it. I guess it’s somewhat cyberpunk, but nothing compared to Cyber City Oedo 808....

JacobCoffinWrites,
@JacobCoffinWrites@slrpnk.net avatar

Oh man, I had this on my list of cyberpunk animes to watch every since it was mentioned on the post about Streets of Fire influencing cyberpunk. I got my SO and the friend we watch TV with every week to watch the first episode with me.

They refuse to watch the rest. It’s amazing and really bad and I have to know what happens next. (At least it’s given me some bargaining power since I can always offer it as a condition when we’re negotiating the next show to watch).

It’s just baffling all around - when the girl the main character likes is gonna hook up with another guy he uses the mech to explode through the wall and grab her and carry her off like fuckin king kong, and somehow that’s okay? They discover that all of the world is just their city, a simulation on a spaceship so the plot shifts to them deciding to use the rest of the spaceship for filming a low budget movie? He’s on the run from the military and escapes into the computer core, so the lead guy is like, don’t shoot in there, use your beam swords (or something like that) and all the mechs suddenly draw light sabers.

Who even is the military? They dress and act like a conventional earth military during the coup but apparently they’ve been fighting the spaceship for control - do they answer to anyone? They don’t appear to be from this level, they’re fighting their way upwards(?). And they know there’s another ship they need to fight soon, so they’ve wisely decided to shoot their own ship up first so the enemy can’t, I guess?

It’s a trip and I really should pick it up again.

JacobCoffinWrites,

Good to know. I looked it up around when I asked and it looks like there’s a couple websites in the US you can try to opt out on but one requires a SSN and a fee, so I’m skeptical.

Local social networks - looking for ideas

I came across the idea of creating a social network whose purpose it is to connect you with people in your area/neighbourhood. Such a network would also be managed by someone in your neighbourhood and would be aimed at creating in-person connections, making people meet and come together....

JacobCoffinWrites,
@JacobCoffinWrites@slrpnk.net avatar

It can be hard to get people to move platforms - most folks have moved to big centralized social media which provides most of what they need in one place, so recruiting may be kinda difficult. On the uphand, the filter effect of a federated local network might mean you get more of the utopian minded activist types looking for a decent place, and fewer lazy racists, but I’m not sure (I’ve never been on nextdoor because I’ve heard ours is essentially a Fox News comment section for your street).

I’ve been blessed with an awesome experience in meeting my neighbors online through the local Everything is Free groups (unfortunately stuck on Facebook). So there’s something of a filter there, the kind of people who join care about not wasting stuff, and will go through extra effort to make sure someone gets it. Or they just need something and this helps them stretch the budget. Either way, the vast majority have been great and I’ve been able to build some cool friendships through this group.

At the same time, despite this interest, the local freecycle page is pretty dead. With maybe a post or two per week compared to the low hundreds per day on the Facebook group.

I think there’s some value in meeting people halfway and providing these things on the platforms they’re already on, but I’ve also fled more and more into federated alternative spaces and mostly ditched the default ones. So this kind of thing really does appeal to me. I’ll keep thinking on how to help with this. I just thought I should speak up as someone who’s actually had a good experience meeting his neighbors through an online group. Maybe there’s something in my experience that could be generalized? I’m not sure.

Caustic Soda Locomotive at a Drying Station (slrpnk.net)

One of my goals for my postcard series is to show a rebuilding society that prioritizes reducing waste and externalities, and examining what weird technologies might appeal to them because of those goals/limitations. So I’ve been wanting to do a scene of a caustic soda locomotive ever since I first heard about them....

JacobCoffinWrites,
@JacobCoffinWrites@slrpnk.net avatar

Here’s a quick shot at a side view of what I’m thinking of. It doesn’t show as many gauges etc as I’d have liked, but feel free to point out any modifications you think it needs!

This is really cool, thank you for taking the time to model your design, it really helps me picture it, and it seems like there’s some good advantages there in smaller modular units being easier to lift off, and capable of higher pressure.

I copied an original soda locomotive design, where the water boiler is inside the larger tank of caustic soda:

https://slrpnk.net/pictrs/image/78a75704-ebfb-4115-b820-671757926019.webp

https://slrpnk.net/pictrs/image/85d76fac-e23f-42cf-a909-c80388c3c595.webp

The soda heats the water, releasing steam, which is run in pipes back and forth through the boiling tank and soda tank to further heat it, then driven through the pistons, before being condensed and released into the outer vessel to produce more heat.

I like the idea of pushing the design choices further, mixing in electric motors etc.

The good news is the canisters of soda don’t need to be lifted into the focal point of the solar concentrator. Historically at least it sounds like they often connected them to an external (coal) boiler and pipes superheated steam through to dry them. It seems to me these could use a similar setup with a hookup leading to something like this: inhabitat.com/…/concentrated_solar/

That should lower the labor amount a bit, and make for safer work.

Unsupported Acer Chromebook Repurposed as Linux Writing Laptop (imgur.com)

One of my hobbies is fixing up ewaste laptops and giving them away. I actually do lots of ewaste electronics, from TVs to space heaters, but the laptops are where I put in the most work. Some are new, intact, and ready to go with nothing more than a OS reset. Others have had parts removed or damaged, and need more work. Most of...

Just wanted to let you know I got Alpine installed on the spare and it’s running great! It’s small enough to fit just on the built in storage chip - even with Mate, udisks2, and other creature comforts, wavemaker cards (sort of a web app scrivener clone) and libreoffice-writer it’s still got 7 gigs free. Plus it’s fast enough to have both writing tools and a web browser open at the same time without lagging. I’m impressed.

I’ve got some old old laptops which I saved because they’re physically in great shape, but too weak to run almost anything modern. I’ll see if this’ll work for them next.

Thanks for the recommendation!
