While fictional, the Law of Jante’s disapproval towards individualism and personal success are very real parts of Scandinavian culture. What would a therapist say?

Does anyone know—and trust—any cloud backup system similar to Backblaze, but hosted in the EU?

@m2m Following along because I have also been curious about this for a long time.

The only ones somewhat similar, but not really, I have found: https://www.eucloud.tech/eu-providers/backup

I don’t vote for political parties founded by actual neonazis in the 1980s.

Important for everyone eligible to vote in the current EU election to keep the EU on a progressive track. The fascists are expected to make gains.

This EU election will be my first time voting as a citizen of Sverige! 💖

Google continues to use its Chrome dominance to make the Web less private by limiting the capabilities and update speed of ad and tracker blocking extensions.

From @arstechnica:

> Google, which makes about 77% of its revenue from advertising, has not published a serious explanation as to why Manifest V3 limits content filtering, and it's not clear how that aligns with the goals of “improving the security, privacy, performance and trustworthiness.”

Switch to Firefox.

According to https://www.BrewFiles.com, I am an architect developer.

I consider myself a full stack Web developer, but I don’t install frontend tools or Rust with Homebrew.

Fun little project from Warp, my fav terminal app. https://app.warp.dev/referral/2YRKGY

I still think the swipe down from the right third to get to control center and swipe down from the remaining ⅔ to get to notifications is a terrible UX on iOS. There is no/little affordance to their behavior.

Similarly, I cannot tell you what tapping the digital crown, side button, and swiping up and down does on the Apple Watch Ultra. I just cycle thru all of them until I get the screen I’m looking for.

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

@jhogervorst I agree the control icons are a minimal affordance on iOS. Unlike WatchOS, I remember which place to swipe, but I often unintentionally swipe too far left when I want the control center. Big hand problems, I guess, but I think there should only be one swipe-from-edge gesture for any particular edge.

I can’t remember ever leaving a meetup early unplanned, but I did tonight. What was supposed to be a presentation on EU startup competitiveness turned out to be an ignorant and pessimistic rant from a VC about EU regulation.

DSA and DMA are startup-friendly regulations that inhibit anticompetitive practices by incumbents. GDPR and AI Act are pragmatic guidelines for ensuring human rights are not harmed by innovation. They’re accessibly written. They’re not perfect, but they are reasonable.

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

If your business idea is crushed by any EU regulations listed on that slide, it doesn’t deserve to exist in the market.

And just because it would be allowed in the US and make rich people there richer doesn’t mean it’s a benefit to humanity or a loss for Europeans.

Don’t let shortsighted VCs preach anti-regulation without actual demonstrations of harm.

Lemon Squeezy, a popular "merchant of record" payments provider built on Stripe, took over a month to refund a purchase I made.

I wanted the purchase, but the payment confirmation got lost in their system. I was charged, but their system couldn't find it. The seller couldn't do anything. Lemon Squeezy's support took so long to respond that I missed the live event.

I would not recommend using Lemon Squeezy for payments.

Every time I have to code a HTML table I miss Macromedia Dreamweaver a whole fuckin’ lot. Where is the open source version of that?

I wish VS Code had a barebones WYSIWYG editor. I think it would replace most Markdown use cases for me.

@negative12dollarbill Such an interesting and sad list. Aptana got EOLed 5 years ago. BlueGriffon just EOLed in March.

I can’t tell if my much lower conference talk proposal acceptance rate in the last year is because my proposals are less desirable or because I no longer work at a Big Tech Co. I suspect it’s the latter, which is a bit of an ego buster and a disappointment in conference organizers.

My husband got upgraded to first class on his 12 hour flight. I was in the cheapest economy saver seat because I work with non-profits and he works for Big Tech Co. (We were on different flights.)

You might say our Lufthansa experience “was a little different for me…”

Jeremiah,

@anderseknert His company bought him business class. His loyalty status (from work travel) + limited demand for that route today I assume got him an extremely reasonable upgrade price.

What level Marriott Bonvoy status gets me a room without tiny lights or panels glowing at night?

Power outlets that support the weight of a wall wart?

How about for a tv with motion smoothing and color modifications disabled?

I didn’t bring enough duct tape to cover all the lights in my room AND hold my laptop power in the socket.

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

I yell, “MacGruber!” wherever I must use duct tape to make power outlets functional in airports.

Jeremiah,

Update: using husband’s cable cantilevered precisely with exposed prongs necessary to maintain power flow. 🎶 MacGruber!

Research does not support the widespread belief that blue light emitted by electronic device screens in the evening is worse than warmer colored light when trying to fall asleep.

My next #WeblogPoMo2024 post is an expansion of an earlier thread on Mastodon.

I was curious about what percentage of people visiting my site had set preferences for light/dark mode, reduced motion, or increased contrast. I also wanted to know what percentage had HDR support.

I figured out how to do that custom tracking with @plausible and wrote a tutorial.
