I want Firefox to succeed more than ever and I support Mozilla finding better revenue sources than search engine default sales, but I do not support a $7M salary for its CEO.

I canceled my recurring donation to Mozilla because I need that money more than Mozilla’s CEO needs that money.

If there is a direct funding option of developers working on Firefox, I will happily reallocate that money. Send me links.

I wrote Hue to voice my displeasure about its cloud service becoming mandatory for my home smart lights.

They replied it was to "advance security".

I replied: The most secure option is for my data to never leave the devices in my home. Duplicating my data to your servers and enabling your servers to remotely control devices my home inherently is less secure.

They politely told me to fuck off.

I will remove all Hue lights when I remodel.

Spotify pays ~70% of its revenue to music rights holders.

If a music artist doesn’t have at least 1,000 plays a month from 713,000,000+ active Spotify users, it’s not Spotify’s fault they are not popular enough to earn a living from their artistry—nor would that artist be able to live off of CDs, merch, and live show performances.

I know capitalism sucks, but people have to actually want someone’s art for it to be a profession. However, the barrier to building a fanbase has never been lower.

No car manufacturer passed Mozilla’s privacy audit, but Nissan’s is just absurd.

Consent to sale of your DNA implied by riding in the vehicle is a consent mechanism I would love to have a sassy US judge comment upon.

I need Mastodon and Kubernetes help:

I am trying to deploy Mastodon to a GCP GKE Autopilot cluster. The Helm chart is failing due to container sysctl calls somewhere getting blocked because GKE does not allow them.

I don't know where to look to investigate where these calls are being made to see if I might avoid them from being made. Any ideas?

Sverige rejected my legal name change. Because there are fewer than 2000 people with the last name Lee in Sverige, they do not have to allow it. They considered it, but I was not able to demonstrate my use of the name for over 10 years adequately.

I'm crushed. I don't know what more I could have done.

I will have to move back to the US, at least temporarily, to change my legal name now since it is a state matter and I have no state living abroad.

I have to travel internationally for work on November 4. I was hoping to have some factual statement to calm my illness anxiety with.

Terraform remains open-source-enough for me—and there is no viable alternative today—but I am still disappointed in HashiCorp adopting Business Source License as a customer, open source contributor, and shareholder.

I know someone will come at me for saying there is no viable alternative, so preemptively: There is no declarative alternative that’s extensively & officially supported by infrastructure providers, “more” open source, not problematically financed.

The Michelin Guide should de-star restaurants without a vegan menu and should only use the quality of the vegan menu for awarding stars going forward.

The planet is on fire. Not eating meat and dairy is one of the few things individuals can do to reduce their carbon footprint.

Many top restaurants in Stockholm refuse to accommodate milk protein allergies or offer vegan options.

Getting upset about an AT Protocol↔ActivityPub bridge is like getting upset that some of your friends used Google Reader to read your RSS.

“I didn’t opt in to people being able to read my public Mastodon posts on the Web unless they request my URLs using a user agent I approve!”

🚨 Urgent

The proposed EU eIDAS regulation will force web browsers to include government-issued certificate authorities. The key technology that makes HTTPS secure would have a backdoor to enable governments to intercept and decrypt your web traffic.

@mozilla, @internetsociety, @edri, @eff, and I have written the European Parliament about the disastrous consequences if this becomes law.

The US Supreme Court ruled a business can refuse service on the basis the customer is gay.

The US filled with people who wish people like me didn’t exist. They vote for politicians who write laws and appoint judges who deny queer people of equality.

macOS and iOS are not accommodating of people living bilingual existences.

I type in Svenglish (Swedish & English). I quickly can access the extra letters of the svenska alphabet from the US English keyboard, but spellcheck, swipe, and autocomplete only work in one language at a time.

The new groceries "smart" list in Reminders categorized “vitvins vinäger” as “Wine, Beer & Spirits” instead of “Oils & Dressings” like when I typed “white wine vinegar”.

Getting it reconnected to my Wi-Fi so that I get the push notifications when it’s done instead of the awful 60 seconds of Samsinging was nearly painful enough to make me start an open source smart home appliance company.

Is anyone aware of a prohibition by GDPR of US-based employees on accessing EU-based customer personal data that otherwise is stored and processed in the EU?

Such a prohibition would mean US companies without an EU presence would not be able to comply with the rest of GDPR.

IANAL, but I have worked on GDPR implementations at several large tech companies. I have never heard of this. Also, if so, several large tech companies’ customer support teams are in trouble.

Jeremiah, to linux

My only regular experience with desktop Linux is Raspberry Pi OS.

The GUI is buggy. Today, the taskbar disappeared when I turned on the monitor. As I dragged a window, the taskbar reappeared. I released the mouse, but the window kept dragging offset from the cursor.

I feel like I cannot rely on it because if there are that many visible bugs, there likely are more invisible bugs.

I am sure I could spend time researching and tweaking, but I have better things to do than fix a default.
