Finland accurately captured Steve Balmer energy in catchy as hell pop and delightfully weird wtf-ness. Amazing. Also, rawr for hairy blond men.

Apple AirDrop has gotten much less reliable in the last year. It used to always work like magic. Now, it seems to fail half of the time on transfers between me and friends and between my own devices.

Also, the bump mega vibration screen ripple thing sends a contact card instead of the thing someone is trying to share often enough to never use it.

The only fix is both sides doing an airplane mode toggle. Annoying. Not magic.

Hey @MDN, with Stack Overflow’s ongoing community implosion, now would be an excellent time to launch MDN Answers so people have a better place to help each other learn.

https://answer.apache.org/

Edit: Or @nodebb / other ActivityPub-enabled forum/threaded discussion community server software

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

@thisismissem I agree federation would be ideal. I mistakenly thought Apache Answer already supported ActivityPub. If it does, I cannot find any reference to it anymore. I have posted a feature request: https://meta.answer.dev/questions/D1kO2/activitypub-support

Jeremiah,

@julian @MDN I agree that MDN’s embrace of ChatGPT is unfortunate, mostly because that model is not great at factual answers.

My objection to Stack Overflow+OpenAI is that it’s proprietary and power consuming.

In general, I think LLMs and other ML models can be helpful to people learning. If MDN had a Q&A site and used people’s contributions to train an open source model people could run locally, I think would be great.

May Stack Overflow’s meltdown birth a thousand community servers owned and operated by the people actually creating the value.

@jraedisch The next one that uses it. 😄

I don’t have one yet. I hope more projects use it so that I can have a better answer in a year.

~“the ad says something about balance of power. Apple is a great tech company, but a legendary marketer. Its ads, keynotes, stores offer a vision of its products as tools that give consumers power. The commercial is a display of force that reminds us about this sleight of hand. We are not the powerful entity in this relationship. The creative potential we feel when we pick up their devices is actually on loan. At the end of the day, it belongs to Apple, the destroyer.”

Feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment.

I paused consulting in December to work on a fragile idea that might only be useful to me, but I’m passionate about it.

Getting close to sharing the first design prototype publicly soon. I’m doing initial user testing now. The first feedback was helpful, but rough.

I hope there is a space between public broadcasty social media like here and tens of group message chats across 5 apps, but explaining the concept is proving difficult.

US Congress is attempting to slip the Kids Online Safety Act into the must-pass FAA reauthorization package. The bill claims to make kids safer, but it’s really a dangerous censorship bill that will give the US government unprecedented control over the Internet.

Fun time to buy a Tesla, a car which is entirely dependent for long distance travel on Tesla's charging network, which was maintained by a five hundred person team Musk just fired in its entirety https://www.fastcompany.com/91116692/tesla-lay-offs-supercharger-team-evs-network-automakers-gm-ford

@aphyr I just sold all my $TSLA stock because of this decision. With the recent departures of brilliant people, I no longer have much long term optimism for Tesla’s dominance.

Tumblr is removing tipping, citing low usage and a need to prioritize other feature development higher.

https://changes.tumblr.com/post/749295377342251008/tipping-is-going-away-on-june-1-2024

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

I tried Tumblr’s tipping feature to document the experience before it gets removed.

• Low usage: took ~20 minutes to find a creator with it enabled
• On iOS, payment did not use Apple Pay. I had to type my name, postal code, credit card number, expiration, verification code.
• When trying to send a second tip, it remembered my name, currency, postal code, but not my credit card details.
• Prices in USD even tho I set SEK as currency
• Smallest tip option $1.99

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

@thisismissem Agreed. I think this is more a failure in execution than concept.

I just tested it for the first time. It was a terrible UX.

Searching the comments suggests many Tumblr users never knew the feature even existed.

I assume Tumblr’s use of Stripe prevented many categories of Tumblr creators from being able to benefit from the tipping feature.
