Asking for subjects, er, citizens of Great Britain and its present-day-still-somehow colonies to swear allegiance to a king feels so, so bizarre to me as someone raised in the US.

Is anyone aware of a prohibition by GDPR of US-based employees on accessing EU-based customer personal data that otherwise is stored and processed in the EU?

Such a prohibition would mean US companies without an EU presence would not be able to comply with the rest of GDPR.

IANAL, but I have worked on GDPR implementations at several large tech companies. I have never heard of this. Also, if so, several large tech companies’ customer support teams are in trouble.

The US Supreme Court ruled a business can refuse service on the basis the customer is gay.

The US filled with people who wish people like me didn’t exist. They vote for politicians who write laws and appoint judges who deny queer people of equality.

Starting a new medication (Alvanse/Vyvanse/Lisdexamfetamine) and now have to avoid vitamin C-rich liquids or as a food additive because it neutralizes it.

This is wildly more difficult than I expected.

macOS and iOS are not accommodating of people living bilingual existences.

I type in Svenglish (Swedish & English). I quickly can access the extra letters of the svenska alphabet from the US English keyboard, but spellcheck, swipe, and autocomplete only work in one language at a time.

The new groceries "smart" list in Reminders categorized “vitvins vinäger” as “Wine, Beer & Spirits” instead of “Oils & Dressings” like when I typed “white wine vinegar”.

I got some exciting news this morning! I cannot share publicly yet, but the outcome I can share:

I get to work full time as an open source software developer on projects I am passionate about for at least the rest of the year.

This is a dream come true. I am so grateful.

Trying to get a server setup on Google Cloud Platform is incredibly frustrating, y'all.

This needs to be a terraform apply and open a browser sort of thing.

My only regular experience with desktop Linux is Raspberry Pi OS.

The GUI is buggy. Today, the taskbar disappeared when I turned on the monitor. As I dragged a window, the taskbar reappeared. I released the mouse, but the window kept dragging offset from the cursor.

I feel like I cannot rely on it because if there are that many visible bugs, there likely are more invisible bugs.

I am sure I could spend time researching and tweaking, but I have better things to do than fix a default.

The only thing I love about Bluesky / AT Protocol is the use of subdomains for user names.

The double-@ is confusing as heck to people, but a link that also works as a mention name is obvious / intuitable (eg "Find me at jeremiahlee.bsky.social which makes me mentionable @jeremiahlee.bsky.social").

It's probably too late to fix this in the , but I wish we might try.

What is the best way to water your houseplants when away from for 2 weeks?

The glass ball things have never worked well for me.

I backed Altifarm's Cura system on Kickstarter 2 years ago and still haven't received it. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hrbstn/cura-led-grow-light-for-indoor-plants/description

I am considering 2 options, but don't have any anecdata on them:

Firefox v120 brings a preview of good privacy features pioneered elsewhere probably because they were too high risk for it do first.

Firefox users in Deutschland can soon enjoy

  2. URL Tracking Protection by default in private windows to remove non-essential URL query parameters often used to track people across the web

StackOverflow is a hostile online community.

The volunteer "strike" in response to a policy change permitting ML-written answers made me wonder about ML moderation.

The site already is heavily gamified. Human moderators get Internet points for well-actually-ing, telling question askers they asked their question incorrectly, and prematurely shutting down learning journeys. Could ML trained on this behavior put moderator trolls out of a volunteer job? 🤪

Beginning in November, people aged 18–49 years who are not in a high-risk group will be able to get the updated COVID-19 vaccine in Sverige if they want it.

Sverige, once again, is being stupid for not recommending a booster for everyone. “It will be like the flu eventually,” they said. Ok, so why is the equivalent of a seasonal flu shot being recommended?

Intercom, the company that pioneered the customer support chat bubble in the lower right corner, decided to stop supporting LGBTQ+ people externally by removing public support of Pride Month and employees internally by killing its employee resource group.

“What’s really tough now is that Pride has got wrapped up, unfortunately, within some circles in kind of more divisive and political issues,” CEO Eoghan McCabe said.

Shame on him.

Before responding to someone online:

• ask yourself what emotions you feel and examine if they are valid

• ask yourself what outcome you desire and examine if your response is likely to achieve that outcome

• ask yourself if you would consider the response truthful, kind, necessary, and helpful if roles were reversed and you received what you wrote

• ask yourself if you would be ok with your response being the last thing you ever posted online

Apple’s first proposal to comply with the EU Digital Markets Act is a demonstration of continued anti-competitive gatekeeper behavior. Now, the @EU_Commission must use its mandate to create a fair market.

Apple wants to charge developers a per-user annual fee for apps downloaded outside of its app store. Apple does not charge a fee if developers use its app store. This is an intentionally prohibitive fee structure designed to punish developers who want to self-publish.

Apple’s malicious compliance with the EU Digital Markets Act is not a failure of the EU to regulate effectively.

The DMA defines expectations with few implementation details. It gives regulators the power to specify details to gatekeepers as needed on a case-by-case basis.

So when Apple does something dumb—like removing PWA support—it’s not the final word. The EU has not yet said Apple’s decisions meet the DMA expectations and compliance is evaluated continuously as outcomes evolve.

Just learned about Mediakollen, a curated list of left-leaning reporting in Sverige.

I only recently learned journalism in Sverige has a center-right leaning which explains SO much about the public discourse in my time here (eg nearly no one saying anything positive about immigration, the idiocy and defense of not recommending masks).

Meta is back to pushing its coerced "consent" tactic on Instagram users in the EU: pay or agree to give us all your data.

Do NOT give consent. Force quit Instagram and relaunch to get around the block.

This screen went away for a few months, but is back as a ruling from the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) is expected soon.

I guess actually flossing daily does indeed make dentists happy. After a year of InvisAlign forcing me to floss 4–6 times a day, once a day to use my retainer/grind guard seems so easy.
