I know what you’re saying, and it’s definitely possible this will backfire on us, but currently Microsoft has been really dedicated to PC gaming and have been really good to PC gamers.

All games are released on game pass day 1, which means you can play all of their new games for cheap vs having to pay $100 CAD+ for them. They are also releasing their games on steam, which means you don’t even have to use their platform. They are also integrating other companies into game pass, so you can play EA Games and Ubisoft games if you have a game pass subscription. I played the crap out of battlefield 2042 through my game pass subscription.

They also have the ability to play Xbox only games on PC, which is super awesome. It requires the next tier up, and then you can straight up play Xbox games on your PC. I was playing Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts. It launches the game in some kind of cloud gaming emulator thing.

So idk. I don’t really agree with your Fuck Microsoft attitude, because they are currently being really incredible for the PC gaming market. I say we can be skeptical about the future, but I don’t really see much to hate on right now.

Edit: Microsoft also doesn’t require a subscription. Like I said, you can buy their games on steam, or you can buy them from the Microsoft store. A subscription is optional, and it’s nice for people who want to pay $15 CAD per month and play a crap ton of different games instead of paying out right for 1 game.

I know. I didn’t say they were. That’s why I said we can be skeptical, but there’s no reason to be so upset screaming fuck Microsoft when they are currently being really great when it comes to gaming.

The same could be said about steam, by the way. At any moment Gabe can fuck us over, or can die and we get fucked, but until we see that happen, I feel like we all trust steam.

You can be skeptical over Microsoft, especially because of their past, but their new manager in charge of their gaming division is doing really well. In fact, I’d say investing in Microsoft for gaming right now is a better deal, considering it’s a cheaper monthly fee. My steam account has a bit over 10,000 dollars of games in it that Gabe can take back at any time. That’s 666 months (55.5 years) of an Xbox game pass subscription in Canada. It’s more risky for me to continue buying on steam. I won’t, as I love steam as a platform, but it still is more risky.

Okay. I don’t see the need to be a negative Nancy and be upset at everyone all because the company has the potential to screw you over. Microsoft nor Valve are being bad guys right now. They are doing wonders for PC gaming, and as a gamer, I’m really excited.

I’ll change my thoughts and opinions as needed, but for now, I’ll enjoy the small victories in life.

Also you do realize that steam allows developers to upload DRM free games to steam, right? Where you can copy the .exe and play the game without ever installing steam? Not sure why you’re upset over steam or think they are a required DRM.

I tried posting this comment already but it didn’t go through? But I literally got a partial refund from Microsoft for cancelling my subscription. They refunded me for the unused days.

Not sure why you’re so angry at Microsoft.

Pretty sure my instance also blocks porn. Can’t say I mind it, really, because I can just create an account on a porn instance.

Allows me to keep NSFW posts on, but not have to worry about pulling up a pic of a gaped ass in public. Plus if I was interested in following porn communities, I’d probably create a second account anyway. And then I wouldn’t even have to wade through all of the regular stuff, I could just sign up for a porn instance. Win-win.

Interesting. I switched to Firefox and will stay there, but I must say, Chrome is the most polished browser I’ve used. Firefox is a weird buggy mess that constantly freezes.

The Android version is clunky as hell, also.

Not to mention they finally fixed an issue with the print dialog in Firefox after months and me reporting it every single update.

Still sticking with Firefox, though.

JshKlsn,
@JshKlsn@lemmy.ml avatar

Performance is worse in general. It’s something you’ll have to try for yourself, but websites generally load worse on Firefox.

Some Google websites will intentionally block you, or serve you older pages if you’re on Firefox. Using a plugin to modify your agent string is a work around, but also makes it seem like you’re using Chrome within their analytics which isn’t a good thing.

Like I said, firefox had a bug where printing shipping labels wasn’t working. Took me months of reporting before it was just recently fixed. No one ever acknowledged my issue, and still to this day the bug report was never marked as fixed. I had to run my company from a chromium based browser for months because of it.

The Android app is ass. It’s so clunky and runs like crap. At least it has ublock origin, which is nice. Only recently did firefox finally get pull to refresh, and it’s a buggy pile of crap lol.

I think it’s good to use Firefox. Chromium based future isn’t a good thing, and Chrome is evil trying to block ad blocking with manifest v3, and being literally the only Android browser without ad blocking. Even chromium based Edge has ad blocking on Android.

People on Lemmy are hard core enthusiasts at the moment. I think anyone that says anything negative about things enthusiasts are really passionate about, like Firefox, Linux, etc, will be downvoted.

I think it’s important to not be a fanboy and to be aware of shortcomings. I’m not against Firefox. It’s the only browser I use now, and I highly suggest everyone give it a try, but I’m also not going to pretend it’s some amazing experience. It’s clunky, but it’s run by a good foundation, has some neat features Chrome doesn’t, and it’s helping prevent an even larger chromium monopoly. Give it a go! Just be aware it’s not perfect, and I think you’ll be more likely to stick with it long term.

JshKlsn,
@JshKlsn@lemmy.ml avatar

Which part?

Firefox doesn’t handle media playback as smoothly as chromium based browsers do. This is because of the codecs and plugins Firefox uses instead.

Firefox on Android is very clunky. Pull to refresh was in the beta for years, and they finally just released it into the main branch and it’s bugged to shit. It was a meme how long it was in development and still doesn’t work right, despite every other browser and app having pull to refresh work perfectly.

I want to be clear, I exclusively use Firefox and think chromium is dangerous for the web. I’m just not going to lie and act like firefox is perfect. If it was, it would have larger marketshare. There’s a reason Chrome, despite being a privacy nightmare, is still at the top. There’s a reason nearly every browser is chromium based.

I think being open about the shortcomings and experience you have with software is healthy. Good for development and good for making new users switch. Being critical is a good thing!

JshKlsn,
@JshKlsn@lemmy.ml avatar

Firefox had multiple full rewrites because it was losing marketshare due to performance. They market this as quantum and they are very up front about it.

blog.mozilla.org/…/introducing-firefox-quantum/

I’m glad your experience with firefox has been perfect for decades. Doesn’t mean I’m wrong.

One of the Linux challenge videos. Either part 1 or 2.

The Linux community loves hating on Linus for this, but honestly, it was a bug that popos has now fixed, and the video genuinely shows how difficult Linux can be for the average user.

I’m sorry, but blaming him for breaking his os because he didn’t check for updates first is ridiculous. The difference is that in Windows, the entire os wouldn’t break if you decided to install steam first. If it did, you would blame Microsoft. Same with MacOS.

It’s not his fault. It was a bug in the os, which is the fault of the pop_os! developers. You also can’t blame him if the command he used was wrong, because Linux users love giving terminal commands to people without explanation and refusal to explain how it could also be done via the UI if preferred.

You know what the better reaction would be? To criticise the developers for allowing a bug like that to make it into production. To explain to the user that it happened to that it’s not their fault, it was a rare bug, and was super unfortunate. Offer them an explanation, maybe suggest other distros that are more polished, and help them with their Linux journey.

Blaming them for something that wasn’t their fault isn’t welcoming, isn’t going to want to make them want to stay, and will make sure they think twice before trying again.

Not sure why you’re upset that he didn’t want to use Fedora? That’s the beauty of Linux, there are plenty of distros. That’s what sets Linux apart. Maybe you don’t want to use Ubuntu because of it’s layout, or a different distro because it’s red and you like green. No matter the reason, who cares? Guess what? I’ve had more issues with Fedora than any other distro I’ve ever used. If you asked me, I’d say Linux Mint is the best ootb experience, and I’m sure someone else will tell me that Linux Mint fucked their wife and killed their cat and that I’m a stupid racist for thinking that.

Edit: also want to make it clear that windows and MacOS both have their own issues, some of which are really bad. No OS is perfect, and I think we should stop being weirdly defensive over a damn operating system. If one of them was leagues better, multiple OSes wouldn’t exist.

JshKlsn,
@JshKlsn@lemmy.ml avatar

You blamed him for a bug in the OS because he didn’t do things exactly how you think they should be done. You didn’t give an opinion, you shifted blame.

Sorry you feel like having a discussion is toxic, but telling someone you stopped reading half way through and saying goodbye is, in fact, toxic behavior.

I’m fine not having a discussion with you further.

Don’t care. Google is also being a baby and blocking Canadians from Canadian news.

Perhaps we should all move away from Google? They clearly can’t be trusted when their response to pay Canadian journalists for rehosting their content is “nah, we instead are going to block Canadian news”.

I don’t think it’s unfair to pay someone when you’re rehosting their stuff or driving away clicks by giving an article summary. Especially when there’s no Google without links. Just like Reddit doesn’t work without users submitting content. Not to mention it’s bold to play this game when there are plenty of Google alternatives now.

Excuse me. Canada is gaining like 100K new people per day. That’s 41 mili… 42 m… 45 million to you!

I switched to duck duck go a year ago and honestly I get my news quicker and more reliably from Lemmy, TikTok, and previously Reddit.

It’s actually scary how much I see from 50 different angles on TikTok before any news outlet even covers it, if even. Saw a stabbing in Toronto from multiple angles a few HOURS before I even seen an article about it.

I know Lemmy hates TikTok, but can’t deny it’s great for being up to date ASAP when it comes to news. At least for right now.

JshKlsn,
@JshKlsn@lemmy.ml avatar

Right. Which isn’t DDG wrongdoing. I’m not going to give DDG a strike for being caught in the crossfire.

I’m already only using the basic necessities from Microsoft because they are a shit company, just like the rest lol.

But we will also see what Microsoft does. They may comply and make Google look even more childish.

YSK: Imagus is Hover Zoom for Lemmy that actually works (addons.mozilla.org)

On desktop Hover Zoom is life changing way to browse memes and gifs. One thing I struggled with when I moved to Lemmy was Hover Zoom support. While it worked with imgur links, these are few and far between. I had given up hope when I finally discovered Imagus works perfectly.

Didn’t hover zoom turn malicious like 8 years ago or whatever?

Almost every place I call has a voice mail limit to prevent people from rambling on. Some places are 60 seconds, some are 120 seconds.

If OPs place is similar, they might only have an hour and a half of work.

Doesn’t Apple already do this? All of the parts on an iPhone are serialized so that any unofficial replacement part causes the device to freak out.

Apple is already ahead on the evil train.

JshKlsn,
@JshKlsn@lemmy.ml avatar

There are lots of changes under the hood. Even so, Chrome is at like version 1773574 now, because they threw away the concept of version numbers years ago.

JshKlsn,
@JshKlsn@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t know if I would trust that, though.

Google’s authorized repair centers have diagnostic tools and software that allows very deep access to the phone. Something that a random maintenance mode wouldn’t hide.

When you take your Pixel in for repair, they force you to factory reset it, because they take privacy serious. They don’t want anyone to have access to your data through their repair tools.

I’d actually be very skeptical about this if I had a Samsung device. Is there proof that this mode cannot be accessed by their repair tools?
