A good Dev in the situation you mention will design the solution needed now not the one you hope for later.
Maintainability is one of the most important if not the most important goal when programming. If a dev only designs a solution that fits for exactly the current situation but doesn’t allow any changes, it’s not a good dev.
But yeah, if you start small, a solution that’s made for that is preferable. You can still refactor things when you get magnitudes larger and have the budget.
Europapa got 182 out of 216 possible points and scored the second place in the second semi-final. Only a bit less than Israel, this would have probably meant a top 5 placement in the finale.
Switzerland is just really great. How he’s able to sing while leaning backwards and spinning on the disk, it’s insane. And additionally to that, it’s the hardest song of the year (I’d even say by quite some margin). His singing talent is insane and I love the song itself as well. It’s just beautiful.
Yayyyy Switzerland gets so many jury votes, my last call was that he’d be the jury winner and so far it looks good :D
And as he’s my favourite tonight, this actually makes me really happy right now :D :D :D I’m crossing my fingers for him :D
I am genuinely sorry if your favourite didn’t make it, but that just… happens for most people when there are many songs. My favourite in 2021 was Switzerland, who won the jury vote but didn’t win overall. But like yeah, Maneskin won and it’s fine, because it’s not just about me. Keiino was my favourite in 2019 as well, but yeah, Arcade was also a great song and a winner. And today, Nemo certainly deserved to win.
If Netherland wouldn’t have happened, this would have been such a great ESC. But yeah… they just needed to fuck it all up.
Honestly, while I’m happy about Switzerland (and Germany tbh), I’m just… still feeling awful, because I feel so sorry for Joost, as this was so important and emotional to him with his parents. I really despise Österdahl and the EBU right now for taking that from him.
Honestly, it’s not dumb. Televoting is super biased towards running order, just see how the same 10 songs last year got ranked in a completely different order in the semifinals and the finals by televoting only:
It’s completely different, some places are basically upside down!
Also, there is just a reason the jury got reinstalled. While the televote is important in my opinion to also allow different songs that are experimental or just fun to have success at ESC, jury vote is equally important to really take a value at the singing quality and difficulty.
Just look at last year: Spain with one of the hardest songs and an insane singing quality got almost no points from the televote because it’s not directly catch on the first listen, the jury was definitely necessary. Also, Poland (with a cheap summer song) got higher than Portugal.
The jury fixes those mistakes of the televote and the televote fixes the mistakes of the jury that sometimes doesn’t care so much for different fun songs.
As far as I know, they weren’t banned, there was just no-one willing to be a spokesperson lol. But this is just what I heard from a comment in a thread, so don’t take it as verified.
I wonder how the voting would have been different with Europapa. I think Croatia would have considerably less televoting as many people switched from Netherlands to Croatia (a post suggesting to do that on Reddit literally has 10 000 upvotes). But otherwise, I don’t really know what would have been different.
I’m still really heartbroken for Joost and I definitely hope that this all will be resolved with strong consequences for the EBU.
Do we have any evidence that the jury’s vote is not similarly biased? It may as well be.
Yep. Here is a literal study coming to exactly that conclusion: doi.org/10.4324/9781003188933-12
But also, you don’t really need a study for that. It’s pretty clear that people who just see songs and a recap and vote for what they have in their memory are more susceptible for it than a Jury that needs to literally rank every single song in a list from 1 to 25/26 in different categories.
And the image I posted above definitely shows how much running order impacts the televoting, as well as this image does (from when the running order was drawn at random):
I’m sorry, but I just disagree. With a relative of mine having studied musical theory for years, I definitely know that there is a huge difference between opinions of random people and people who literally have spent years with the theory and can judge the quality of singing and the challenges of a song in completely different and finer ways. There definitely is another level of appreciation.

Ah, sorry for the mistake and thanks for writing here
I just locked some posts to try and get the discussion in one place, but made a mistake. I unlocked it
We have taken note of the disqualification by the EBU. AVROTROS finds the disqualification disproportionate and is shocked by the decision. We deeply regret this.
An incident occurred after last Thursday’s performance. Against clearly made agreements, Joost was filmed when he had just gotten off stage and had to rush to the greenroom. At that moment, Joost repeatedly indicated that he did not want to be filmed. This wasn’t respected. This led to a threatening movement from Joost towards the camera. Joost did not touch the camera woman. This incident was reported, followed by an investigation by the EBU and police.
Yesterday and today we consulted extensively with the EBU and proposed several solutions. Nevertheless, the EBU has still decided to disqualify Joost Klein. AVROTROS finds the penalty very heavy and disproportionate. We stand for good manners -let there be no misunderstanding about that- but in our view, an exclusion order is not proportional to this incident.
We are very disappointed and upset for the millions of fans who were so excited for tonight. What Joost brought to the Netherlands and Europe shouldn’t have ended this way.
