I think I’ll open a pinned thread about this now as there exist so many posts about this with news and it’s getting a bit out of hand. I’m sorry but can you repost this there as a comment?

(It should probably noticed that this isn’t the Belgian broadcaster responsible for ESC this year but a different one also broadcasting it.)

This is the first time ever a contestant gets suspended mid-competition :/
And even one of the favourites…

Honestly, the whole way EBU handled this all is just a mess. Being completely intransparent while allowing tons of different rumors to emerge, delaying a countdown that implies a statement “for two hours” and then longer indefinitely, and now still not openly sharing the facts and just talking about inappropriate behaviour. I don’t think you can reasonably condemn or support Joost just because we really don’t know what happened or even if he did something (innocent until proven guilty I guess).
I know that in an ongoing investigation you can’t directly share everything you know and that you might want to take some time to research without it going public, but they still could have dealt with this better… either just letting him perform in the rehearsal to prevent it from going public and rumors spreading or sharing more about what they know and announcing when they will make an official statement.

I’m just… so sorry for him. I’d be sorry for basically any artist I think, but I think most for him. Because the song is so personal and a tribute to his father, and that he’s so proud to have made it on the Eurovision stage for them… This is just really tragic. :(

Yeah, that’s where most of the discussion currently is. But I thought this was such major news that it deserves its own post.

According to SVT (the Swedish broadcaster), Malmö police is now informed as well:

The Malmö police confirm to SVT Nyheter that they are on site and investigating what has happened.

Yeah, it kind of is. But I thought it’s a major update and many people don’t click on posts (or even refresh them later) but just see the titles and headlines and I thought it makes sense to still reach them with this update. But I agree that this is a grey area; I could have also made it a comment.

I’ll just share this comment I found by u/vane because I found it really funny:

Breaking news, FBI is currently hiring individuals from the EBU after they successfully conducted such a thorough and lengthy investigation

Ohh yeah, true…
(Although of course that’s rather speculative. @Vivarevo, do you know where these rumors come from?)
Every ESC has its drama but honestly this year really feels like another level with things like this ://

Up until a years ago I was of the opinion “There’s no political voting, UK 2022 and Germany 2018 were super popular so it’s possible”. But honestly, after last year I think it’s possible, but some countries still have a disadvantage and they need to produce an absolutely amazing song to get a great result, but only a good song won’t get them the points a different country would get. Only my personal opinion though.

Korne127,
@Korne127@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah. In the end, rumors are just rumors and only time will tell what exactly happened because of which reasons.

Korne127,
@Korne127@lemmy.world avatar

Probably a minor update, but I’ve read about this and Joost unfollowed Eurovision and deleted his Eurovision story from yesterday.

According to information to SVT [the Swedish broadcaster], there has been a physical confrontation between the artist and a photographer

Source: svt.se/…/incident-utreds-kring-nederlandske-artis…
That seems like a credible source. But there’s still almost no certified information to what exactly happened.

Korne127,
@Korne127@lemmy.world avatar

I really hope this isn’t the case :/
Especially for him with his special bond to Eurovision and the song with his parents :///
And of course also because I really liked his song and it’s in my top 3 :(

I think it will be resolved shortly, definitely after the contest. Even in the past where the EBU has been intransparent (e.g. with the invalidated corrupt jury votes), it got pretty clear afterwards what happened. But I guess we’ll see.
