I know they sometimes get a bad rap (especially recently with the lay offs www.washingtonpost.com/…/duolingo-ai-layoffs/), but it’s still a nice app to use to get started with a language
2200+ fire streak since I joined 10 years ago (multiple languages). Lost the streak a few times before. I’m not fluent but maintaining it helps me to improve a bit every day.
Almost all countries require official authentication to activate a SIM card. This seems to me as a huge privacy problem, if the country can track sim cards across cell towers and connect them to a person. It seems like a dystopian system, that we litterely can not hide from our governments without turning off our smartphones. It...
I think it’s actually the other way around. BECAUSE phone numbers are linked to our accounts and identities, it makes us vulnerable to SIM swapping. They should only be used for calling and texting people, nothing more. But nowadays we need to link our personal details to them, our accounts, which introduces this vulnerability because then it creates this incentive for an attack
I really enjoyed starting to watch Dragonball z years ago in Japanese. I noticed how boring or wrong the English dubs were after that. A lot of censoring too. And it’s hard to be better than Japanese voice actors too
I’m talking for example about Apple relying on child labor in China for cheap labour, being directly responsible for suicides in the factories of their Chinese partners, them sabotaging their clients phones to make them slower....
I would argue both have evolved in the opposite way though. Windows has become so unintuitive for me with every version after win 7. Splitting up control panel in many different locations. Multiple methods to remove different applications,… On windows server, it was even worse, and as soon as I moved away from Microsoft’s default built-in crap to third party tools, things actually became much easier.
While with Linux, things worked out of the box for me for a long time already and the process of things make sense a lot times, taking into account the requires minimal knowledge is there.
I never felt OpenOffice and libreoffice were a decent replacement for MS office. It was too different in many ways and compatibility was never top. Since I moved to softmaker (not OSS), I’ve been happier.
Interesting that you ask about this. I was looking for one last week and noticed all Android ones are full of trackers (via play store) so I thought about developing an open source one that not only let you track your usage, but also create community groups that support you in not drinking anymore. All with full privacy
I've been thinking about getting a hardware security key and have heard of yubikey before; but I want to see what my options are and if they are worth it in your opinion.
My current setup is a local KeePassXC database (that I sync between my PC and phone and also acts as TOTP authenticator app), I know that KeePass supports hardware keys for unlocking the database.
I am personally still of the belief that passwords are the safest when done right; but 2FA/MFA can greatly increase security on top of that (again, if done right).
The key work work together with already existing passwords, not replace them.
As I use linux as my primary OS I do expect it to support it and anything that doesn't I will have to pass on.
PS: what are the things I need to know about these hardware keys that's not being talked about too much, I am very much delving into new territory and want to make sure I'm properly educated before I delve in.
Nitrokey isn’t fully open source though. The secure element is proprietary. But that’s not their fault, OSS secure elements aren’t a thing yet unfortunately, but some companies wanna bring a change in that
Looks good. I also add compress=zstd to / subvolume. I don’t add discard because it’s set up in LUKS for me. I also don’t use a separate subvolume for /var/log, so where possible, compression is used. Journald auto adds +C attr to prevent COW being active on those files because it’s unnecessary. I also use a separate swapfile instead of a separate fs.
I’m totally against the military part. It’s just elite people deciding on the lives of people that are not in power. And when the time is right, they’ll take away your freedom of choice and mandate you to join a war. My body my rules.
That’s why people join the military voluntarily and get paid for it. My statement was only against forced military service.
Anything mandatory generally is ridiculous and counterproductive. By forcing people to do community service won’t necessarily make them better citizens either. E.g. in South Korea, a lot of people got a trauma from it because (extreme) bullying is very present there. There’s a good documentary about it.

I have an issue with how SIM cards are handled in most countries
Almost all countries require official authentication to activate a SIM card. This seems to me as a huge privacy problem, if the country can track sim cards across cell towers and connect them to a person. It seems like a dystopian system, that we litterely can not hide from our governments without turning off our smartphones. It...
