@decryption FWIW, after all that faff with the JB Pixel 8a deal, I went from SIM to eSIM on my old 6a, then moved that to the 8a with minimal fuss. I'm now talking to you from a phone that's never had a physical SIM card in it!

got a pixel 8a - too cheap not to!

  • RRP is $849

  • JB is running a promo where you get $300 off the 8a if you trade in any smartphone, so I gave them a Samsung Note 10 with a cracked screen for $1, bringing the price down to $548

  • if you make a new JB Hi-Fi perks account you get a $10 off coupon, $538

  • I paid the $538 with a gift card I got at 5% off making my out of pocket cost $511.55

  • plus JB give you a $200 gift card if you buy an 8A during its first 2 weeks of sale, which I'll happily use on more ink for my Epson ET-8550, or a new lens for my camera, making the effective price $311.55 for a brand new phone that has support for 7 years ($45/yr if the battery makes it that long!)

I love bargains 💸

@decryption @trib This calls for an ancient marketing meme

M0les,
@M0les@aus.social avatar

@decryption Also: You don't need to trade in a "smart" phone for the $300 voucher - There's a 3G trade-up deal where you can get $1 for a working 3G dumbphone.
I'm going to send them my father in law's recently shed 3D phone.

M0les,
@M0les@aus.social avatar

@decryption Hm, $10 voucher won't stack with $300 one - harumph!

M0les,
@M0les@aus.social avatar

@decryption Yeah: "Better coupon already applied" or some such nonsense. Can one still get 5% off gift cards - if so: where?

Any solutions for using a smartphone permanently plugged in without destroying the battery? e.g for use as a security camera, or a display

M0les,
@M0les@aus.social avatar

@decryption Most expensive computers/phones/brains have battery management stuff that's supposed to look after this for you. They shouldn't() continuously charge the battery(/ies). Pixel phones in particular have very elegant charge control stuff that tries to preserve your battery's life too.
(
): Things that come to market rapidly (like electronic hoverboards and scooters a few years ago) can often skip sane battery management. On the plus side they have a second use as firelighters!

M0les,
@M0les@aus.social avatar

@decryption I'm not an expert, just parroting what I've heard (and i'd expect it'd vary by device). Personally I've only had that happen to two devices: one was an old Samsung phone that had been on the shelf for some years, the other was an old Sony tablet sitting on its Sony speaker dock. The only commonality was "old", but one was permanently on power and the other wasn't.

    @decryption I have several generations of "compensation stamps" to make older stamps usable at the latest prices.
    I kind of wish we still had those cast-iron vending machines that would dole out 2c stamps from a roll. Mainly because they were cool, not that I post much any more.

    @decryption I've had something similar from many niche hardware vendors. I suspect they're all built from Excel macros or Rexx scripts or something on the backend with a bundled interpreter containing some broken half-baked DRM/registration schemes on the front.

    25L of unleaded fuel that's been stored in a shed for months for $40 - who the fuck is buying this versus just going to a petrol station where you'll get fresh fuel for less money??
