MahmutRuzi, to academia

Did anyone receive this kind of review invitation? Perhaps you @j_bertolotti ?

Apparently, they started paying 20 $ for reviewing! It seems that finally, someone paid attention to all the complaints and the quality of the existing peer review process. The fee may seem too low, but here in Turkey 🇹🇷 it equals 650 Turkish lira, which is about one week's groceries.

@TEG @j_bertolotti @academicsunite yes, but still, it's better than zero, which has been the case. Besides, the article sounds novel and interesting.

For / and other massive industrial publishers, increase in paper volume in -driven open access is the main source of growth that is presented to investors. More papers needed to stay afloat in always-increasing proprietary bibliometric sea, bigger profits. On the other end of the business, surveillance backed analytics tools to insurance companies and law enforcement is the biggest growth driver.

These are the companies we have paid billions in public money to over a generation. Another 13% hike in profits, now £3 billion annually. When will we find the courage to say enough is enough?

@CarKettner @jonny It' already affecting individuals. I once received an unsolicited email from a company selling some chemical materials. I was wondering how they got my email address and able to direct content. Then, at the end, in small letters, they clarified that they had bought the info from Clarivate.

@jonny their profit margins are insane, but not surprising, knowing how they make their money. I have thought about the issues in publishing and proposed a solution in a post. It essentially advocates getting rid of traditional publishers, commercial and society based alike, and adopting arxiv like approach, plus some imprivements like reviewing some (10%) papers, paying for doing it, and publish singned review along with the paper.
