While I was asleep, apparently the site was hacked. Luckily, (big) part of the lemmy.world team is in US, and some early birds in EU also helped mitigate this....
Pretty much. The hacker sent me a DM with the emoji which contained the malicious code. All I did was open and read it. I’m proud of the team that worked until 2 AM to not only revert the changes, but fix the exploit.
We know an issue occurred on the site over an hour ago with someone using my account to redirect the site, make fake posts, and change other settings. The problem has been corrected....
Thanks for spreading the word. No one has claimed any of the community names so we’ll be running a script to purge the inactive ones. They had more than 300, so I’m glad I don’t have to remove them manually.
I’m mostly concerned about lemmy.world/c/newhampshire because I’m from there, but they’re on a range of location and interest communities. Where’s the line for community mod-squatting?

Banned user with a ton of generic community names?
User @Kombuchawow is banned for whatever reason but they are the sole mod (owner?) of a bunch of communities....
User elon_musk is mod of (has created?) 70 communities, but doesn't appear to be active in any of them
