What is the benefit of closing Studios? Why not sell them?

Yes, this is in relation to the closing of Tango Gameworks and Arcane Austin. Is there some immediate monetary benefit behind it that I have no idea about? Is it so they can keep the IPs and not have to deal with the developers? Are the Studios too expensive for anyone to buy? I honestly don’t understand how these executives...

MrAlternateTape,

The benefit: you no longer have to pay staff or rent for that studio. Take the IP’s, what else of value is there really? The rest is just a burden.

Most of them are not bought to ensure their future or as an investment. They are bought to take the IP and eliminate a competitor or threat.

It’s sad, but that’s the problem with big companies with huge wallets. They’ll push people out of a job and won’t loose any sleep over it either.

At least that is what I think.

MrAlternateTape,

It’s a gift. If they don’t like it I hope they find a good destination for it. Maybe somebody else will be happy with it.

I give it away, and then I don’t really care anymore, unless the gift was expensive and specifically asked for.

I don’t waste my time by being offended about things that I have no control over. I’ve added my positive contribution to the situation, do with it what you want.

MrAlternateTape,

A good employer would listen to your complaint. Then talk to the other guy. But he will not get fired over one incident.

It may get added to his personal file. If the list of complaints gets to big, some training may follow.

In my country it is very difficult to fire somebody for something like this. Only after repeated incidents, extra training and multiple chances to improve over a longer period of time would they stand a chance.

That does however require other people to report those incidents. So go ahead and report it because it clearly makes you very uncomfortable and it is very unprofessional from the other guy.

MrAlternateTape,

It could help with long term to define sub goals.

For example, about what amount of savings you want to have by which date, or set a date when you want to have a clear concise description of what kind of house and location you are looking for.

At another date you want to be familiar with all the things that involve buying a house, the documents and what not.

By defining sub goals you keep things real and are able to measure your position towards your goal.

It’s a valid strategy for dealing with complex and long term stuff.

MrAlternateTape,

Not sure, but if the windshield shattered there’s probably damage to other parts too. If the bike had side farings those would probably crack too and need to be replaced. If not, the engine could have touched the ground, and replacing once of the sides of your engine isn’t cheap either.

The handlebars could be damaged, the forks could be out of whack. Everything needs to be checked to make sure it’s still safe to drive.

800 dollar may not be the damage that was there, but if you take into account the hours the mechanic has to spent checking and fixing the bike, the bill adds up quickly.

Source: dropped my bike. Around 1200 euro damage. That was not a fun experience.

MrAlternateTape,

There are many “nature films” where indeed the cameraman is filming himself during such activities. I think it’s a budget thing…

MrAlternateTape,

I knew this one, but I enjoy it everytime. Because it’s true, we add way too much stuff we don’t need, and that page loads instantly and gets the point across. It’s perfect.

MrAlternateTape,

I’m in this picture and I don’t like it…

MrAlternateTape,

It’s actually a classic programmer move to start over again. I’ve read the book “Clean Code” and it talks about a little bit.

Appereantly it would not be the first time that the new start turns into the same mess as the old codebase it’s supposed to replace. While starting over can be tempting, refactoring is in my opinion better.

If you refactor a lot, you start thinking the same way about the new code you write. So any new code you write will probably be better and you’ll be cleaning up the old code too. If you know you have to clean up the mess anyways, better do it right the first time …

However it is not hard to imagine that some programming languages simply get too old and the application has to be rewritten in a new language to ensure continuity. So I think that happens sometimes.

MrAlternateTape,

I like those last three sentences. You managed to capture the infinite size of the universe and what it means. Bravo.

MrAlternateTape, (edited )

There’s so many distro’s to choose from that can all be productive.

If the question is this short, my answer is too: Go try at least 10 and then come back to tell us what you liked and what not.

Without any further information it’s like going into a forest and asking people to point out a tree. Unless you look for some specific tree all will do…

Edit: Fat fingers

Are there any CPUs that work well with Linux that aren't made by Intel or another company on the BDS list/that supports Israel?

I have a Ryzen 3 1300X at the moment and it’s always had this soft lock freezing bug on Linux. I used to dual-boot Windows on this machine and Windows never had the same problem, so I think it is an issue with the Linux kernel (I’ve also replaced nearly every bit of hardware that I originally built the PC with, except for...

MrAlternateTape,

While it probably isn’t the issue for you, I have once been chasing a hard freeze that was caused by some APM setting in the BIOS. If you are on AMD right now you could check it.

It was very weird, setting it to automatic would cause random freezes. Setting it to on or off would both work just fine. Somehow the automatic setting gave me issues.

Just a random thing for you to check I guess.

People who can don't get mad and just go with the flow, how do you do it?

Here recently it seems like everything just gets under my skin so quickly and easily. It’s not that I get mad and take it out on others, it’s just the fact that I’m constantly annoyed and stressed. Something as simple as the dogs tracking some mud through the house will just ruin my mood. I know some people who would just...

MrAlternateTape,

I have been stressed out about everything in the past, but I worked through a lot of things.

The main thing for me is acceptence. I accept whatever comes at me, and I deal with it.

Missed the bus? I accept that that is the new situation, and then start thinking about how to deal with the consequences. Do I need to inform somebody that I will be later, or do I need to do anything else? Is there a different route I can take?

And what is also important, I watch myself. I make sure I get enough sleep and I have some time for myself to chill. It helps if you are not tired or burned out. I have been tired and burned out and it makes me far more emotional and unpredictable.

I accept that I am not in control of a lot of things. But I can always control my response to those things. If somebody is trying to piss me off, I can stay calm and that puts me in control of the situation.

I also realized that bad moods are contagious. If somebody was in a bad mood around me I would pick it up too. But now I figured, why? I don’t want somebody elses state of mind to control mine. So I accept that they are in a bad mood, and choose to keep my mood going.

I choose to control myself in all circumstances, no matter how crazy, and it makes me happier and less stressed. I’m still not perfect but I feel a lot better a lot of the time.

And it’s a great practice for emergency situations too. I’ve been able to solve some things rather quickly just by not panicking and making the right calls to give some things priority over others.

MrAlternateTape,

Just wait. In 10 years 32 gig is on the low side to just run the OS. Hardware getest faster and bigger, but software scales with it.

The more resources are available, the more people will program computers to use them.

My first graphics card had 128mb memory. These days it goes in gigabyte and they use the memory and processing power to produce amazing things.

On the other hand, they also are not as critical on efficiëncy as used to be, because there are simply more resources available anyway. As a consequence, some programs use a silly amount of resources for basically doing nothing. Sometimes I really feel like my browser is eating RAM…

MrAlternateTape,

I would recommend finding something interesting to do, stimulating your mind instead of dulling it.

Challenge yourself, find the spot where you are just a little uncomfortable with what you are doing to stimulate personal growth.

MrAlternateTape,

Things like that probably require some scripting. You can check if there are ready to go scripts that you can just copy, but most likely you’ll have to program something up yourself. Even if there are scripts to copy, without understanding what they actually do and how they will work with WordPress you will have a hard time using them.

If you are not proficient in HTML yet, you are probably not ready for this. You’ll need to learn some scripting, insert those scripts on the pages and for that you need a deeper understanding of how everything works.

Unfortunately this means there is no easy solution here, you’ll have to put in the work to search and learn how to do this or you decide you don’t need it after all.

MrAlternateTape,

You’re not supposed to see this, get me medical help.

MrAlternateTape,

Classic meditation method: don’t block any thoughts, just accept any thought that pops up, and visualise it floating away. Usually does the trick for me.

Or visualize a water flow like a river streaming through your mind, taking all the thoughts with it.

There are lots of visualisations you can do to help clear your mind or control your emotions.

MrAlternateTape,

Everybody is storing it in different conditions. Me for example, my printer is in front of a window that gets afternoon sun.

No cover, no curtains or anything. I just leave my PETG roll on the printer and print whenever I want to. Just recently after like 6 months of not printing I printed something to test without any problems at all…

What do you think of Just Stop Oil?

My Views: I would love it if Solar, Hydro and Wind and other renewable sources of energy + Non Renewable Nuclear were to provide enough energy reliably to completely replace fossil fuels, but I know it’s not a feasible solution at least at this point. And maybe it will never be. Renewable sources of energy are highly dependent...

MrAlternateTape,

It’s not just power either. Green energy is not good enough yet, but there are other problems.

Whole industries are built on using whatever is left after certain oil processes. You might be using something right now, that has resources that in the end would not be there without oil mining.

PVC floors use part of oil that is left over after kerosine is made for airplanes. So if we stop using fuel, we also have to figure out a replacement for that. And this is just one example. There could be thousands of things like this.

Because we have the oil and the leftovers, we use it and have very efficient technology to create products that we need. So if we stop using fuel, we have solved one problem(and I don’t believe we will be able to do this for quite some time), but there will be consequences everywhere.

Jobs will disappear, whole industries need to start over and find different ways of producing things with different, green resources. The very foundation that our society is built on will need to shift.

I believe plastic is also an oil product. Can you imagine a world with no plastic? I know it is bad for the environment, but if you want to package food safely, or medicine, what is the alternative?

It is going to take a tremendous amount of effort, innovation and money to get even close to stopping with oil, and even more to solve all the problems that will follow.

MrAlternateTape,

As far as I know, other distributions just don’t show these errors, but Ubuntu choose to show them.

Most of them are just due too a BIOS implementation that is not entirely up to standards, from what I understand. It seems some manufacturers have chosen to make their system easier to use with Windows instead of strictly enforcing standards.

I just ignore the errors. As long as everything works properly, I feel fine with that.

MrAlternateTape, (edited )

Okay, that sucks. Might want to get in touch with as many companies as you can, explain the situation and see if you can work something out.

If you can communicate that you’ll need more time, I think they would prefer that over not getting any money at all.

When you are in deep shit like this, speak about it. Let everyone who you still own money know that you want to, but cannot pay right now and you want to work out an arrangement.

Also check if the government has a program to assist with debt. Be proactive, people are more willing to work with someone that is taking action to change things up.

The worst thing you can do is stop opening mail and just ignore it. It will only make the problems bigger. Get help, anywhere you can.

Good luck.

Edit: depending on your country and relationship with your employer, consider informing your employer too. Some employers are willing to work something out with you if you explain how it happened and how you want to get out of it.

MrAlternateTape,

I don’t really care, rant here or make a general rant thread and see if it gets shut down. Then rant about it.

MrAlternateTape,

I just got this mail. They are very funny. It is clear that they are trying to generate money by adding features, but the whole point is that I don’t need more features.

I just need the program as it is, hell, they can still take more functionality away and it will still work for me just fine. I just use it for small projects, maybe twice a year.

If the free version ever goes away, I’ll just learn some other program. There might be a learning curve, but I don’t mind.

And I understand that they need to make money, and they have every right to charge whatever they want. But mails like this make them look desperate for cash.

If they really don’t want too, don’t have a free product. Then everybody knows what is up.
