What is the benefit of closing Studios? Why not sell them?

Yes, this is in relation to the closing of Tango Gameworks and Arcane Austin. Is there some immediate monetary benefit behind it that I have no idea about? Is it so they can keep the IPs and not have to deal with the developers? Are the Studios too expensive for anyone to buy? I honestly don’t understand how these executives...

MrAlternateTape,

The benefit: you no longer have to pay staff or rent for that studio. Take the IP’s, what else of value is there really? The rest is just a burden.

Most of them are not bought to ensure their future or as an investment. They are bought to take the IP and eliminate a competitor or threat.

It’s sad, but that’s the problem with big companies with huge wallets. They’ll push people out of a job and won’t loose any sleep over it either.

At least that is what I think.

MrAlternateTape,

A good employer would listen to your complaint. Then talk to the other guy. But he will not get fired over one incident.

It may get added to his personal file. If the list of complaints gets to big, some training may follow.

In my country it is very difficult to fire somebody for something like this. Only after repeated incidents, extra training and multiple chances to improve over a longer period of time would they stand a chance.

That does however require other people to report those incidents. So go ahead and report it because it clearly makes you very uncomfortable and it is very unprofessional from the other guy.

MrAlternateTape,

I knew this one, but I enjoy it everytime. Because it’s true, we add way too much stuff we don’t need, and that page loads instantly and gets the point across. It’s perfect.

MrAlternateTape,

I’m in this picture and I don’t like it…

MrAlternateTape,

It’s actually a classic programmer move to start over again. I’ve read the book “Clean Code” and it talks about a little bit.

Appereantly it would not be the first time that the new start turns into the same mess as the old codebase it’s supposed to replace. While starting over can be tempting, refactoring is in my opinion better.

If you refactor a lot, you start thinking the same way about the new code you write. So any new code you write will probably be better and you’ll be cleaning up the old code too. If you know you have to clean up the mess anyways, better do it right the first time …

However it is not hard to imagine that some programming languages simply get too old and the application has to be rewritten in a new language to ensure continuity. So I think that happens sometimes.

MrAlternateTape, (edited )

There’s so many distro’s to choose from that can all be productive.

If the question is this short, my answer is too: Go try at least 10 and then come back to tell us what you liked and what not.

Without any further information it’s like going into a forest and asking people to point out a tree. Unless you look for some specific tree all will do…

Edit: Fat fingers

Are there any CPUs that work well with Linux that aren't made by Intel or another company on the BDS list/that supports Israel?

I have a Ryzen 3 1300X at the moment and it’s always had this soft lock freezing bug on Linux. I used to dual-boot Windows on this machine and Windows never had the same problem, so I think it is an issue with the Linux kernel (I’ve also replaced nearly every bit of hardware that I originally built the PC with, except for...

MrAlternateTape,

While it probably isn’t the issue for you, I have once been chasing a hard freeze that was caused by some APM setting in the BIOS. If you are on AMD right now you could check it.

It was very weird, setting it to automatic would cause random freezes. Setting it to on or off would both work just fine. Somehow the automatic setting gave me issues.

Just a random thing for you to check I guess.

People who can don't get mad and just go with the flow, how do you do it?

Here recently it seems like everything just gets under my skin so quickly and easily. It’s not that I get mad and take it out on others, it’s just the fact that I’m constantly annoyed and stressed. Something as simple as the dogs tracking some mud through the house will just ruin my mood. I know some people who would just...

MrAlternateTape,

I have been stressed out about everything in the past, but I worked through a lot of things.

The main thing for me is acceptence. I accept whatever comes at me, and I deal with it.

Missed the bus? I accept that that is the new situation, and then start thinking about how to deal with the consequences. Do I need to inform somebody that I will be later, or do I need to do anything else? Is there a different route I can take?

And what is also important, I watch myself. I make sure I get enough sleep and I have some time for myself to chill. It helps if you are not tired or burned out. I have been tired and burned out and it makes me far more emotional and unpredictable.

I accept that I am not in control of a lot of things. But I can always control my response to those things. If somebody is trying to piss me off, I can stay calm and that puts me in control of the situation.

I also realized that bad moods are contagious. If somebody was in a bad mood around me I would pick it up too. But now I figured, why? I don’t want somebody elses state of mind to control mine. So I accept that they are in a bad mood, and choose to keep my mood going.

I choose to control myself in all circumstances, no matter how crazy, and it makes me happier and less stressed. I’m still not perfect but I feel a lot better a lot of the time.

And it’s a great practice for emergency situations too. I’ve been able to solve some things rather quickly just by not panicking and making the right calls to give some things priority over others.

MrAlternateTape,

Just wait. In 10 years 32 gig is on the low side to just run the OS. Hardware getest faster and bigger, but software scales with it.

The more resources are available, the more people will program computers to use them.

My first graphics card had 128mb memory. These days it goes in gigabyte and they use the memory and processing power to produce amazing things.

On the other hand, they also are not as critical on efficiëncy as used to be, because there are simply more resources available anyway. As a consequence, some programs use a silly amount of resources for basically doing nothing. Sometimes I really feel like my browser is eating RAM…

MrAlternateTape,

I would recommend finding something interesting to do, stimulating your mind instead of dulling it.

Challenge yourself, find the spot where you are just a little uncomfortable with what you are doing to stimulate personal growth.

MrAlternateTape,

Things like that probably require some scripting. You can check if there are ready to go scripts that you can just copy, but most likely you’ll have to program something up yourself. Even if there are scripts to copy, without understanding what they actually do and how they will work with WordPress you will have a hard time using them.

If you are not proficient in HTML yet, you are probably not ready for this. You’ll need to learn some scripting, insert those scripts on the pages and for that you need a deeper understanding of how everything works.

Unfortunately this means there is no easy solution here, you’ll have to put in the work to search and learn how to do this or you decide you don’t need it after all.

MrAlternateTape,

You’re not supposed to see this, get me medical help.

MrAlternateTape,

Classic meditation method: don’t block any thoughts, just accept any thought that pops up, and visualise it floating away. Usually does the trick for me.

Or visualize a water flow like a river streaming through your mind, taking all the thoughts with it.

There are lots of visualisations you can do to help clear your mind or control your emotions.

MrAlternateTape,

As far as I know, other distributions just don’t show these errors, but Ubuntu choose to show them.

Most of them are just due too a BIOS implementation that is not entirely up to standards, from what I understand. It seems some manufacturers have chosen to make their system easier to use with Windows instead of strictly enforcing standards.

I just ignore the errors. As long as everything works properly, I feel fine with that.

MrAlternateTape,

I don’t really care, rant here or make a general rant thread and see if it gets shut down. Then rant about it.

MrAlternateTape,

I just got this mail. They are very funny. It is clear that they are trying to generate money by adding features, but the whole point is that I don’t need more features.

I just need the program as it is, hell, they can still take more functionality away and it will still work for me just fine. I just use it for small projects, maybe twice a year.

If the free version ever goes away, I’ll just learn some other program. There might be a learning curve, but I don’t mind.

And I understand that they need to make money, and they have every right to charge whatever they want. But mails like this make them look desperate for cash.

If they really don’t want too, don’t have a free product. Then everybody knows what is up.

MrAlternateTape,

That is a nice bike. Glas you enjoy it! What model KTM is it?

MrAlternateTape,

The only departement you don’t really need, except your competitors have one, so now you need one too.

And the problem for me is not with a simple ad for the local grocery store. It’s when they made a science out of influencing people and targeting specific groups and working on your subconscious.

I would like to think that I’m not affect by marketing. But the truth is that we all are being led by subtle marketing too, not just the obvious marketing.

So in a way, they affect the choices I make and I don’t want anybody but me to make the choices.

Obviously marketing is not going away now. If anything, it will only get more intrusive and intense. I hate marketing…

Question to those not in the USA, and who have lived outside the USA.

I’ve been thinking about something and want to check an assumption I have. I only hear directly from other people in the USA, and interract with the global community through memes. How are the gun regulations/laws different from yours in terms of strictness, and do you wish there was more or less where you live?...

MrAlternateTape,

Netherlands here. You can get a permit for sport shooting or hunting. Guns for self defense are not allowed.

Any violence used to catch a burglary or somebody breaking in has to be a reasonable response. So if they have no weapon and you hit them with a baseball bat you are actually in trouble. This can be very frustrating but there is a point to it. Minimal violence is the name of the game here.

Even the police are trained to talk first and only resort to violence when absolutely necessary. Drawing a weapon as a cop means filling out paperwork and there will be a review to make sure it was the right move.

However, for sport shooting you have to join a shooting club and shoot competition. The first year you can only shoot with air guns.

If you get a gun for sport shooting, you have to have a safe for the weapon, grounded to the wall and the floor. It will be inspected and police can check on you at random times.

Ammo and weapon should be separated at all times, transport can only be done in cases.

You are not allowed to load the gun until you are basically ready to shoot. If you have to shoot five times, you are not allowed to load six shots. You can have a maximum of 5 guns. Assault rifles are not legal I think. There are no competitions with them, so you have no reason to buy them.

The rules are strict. We only had one big “recent” shooting and I think it is at least 10 years ago. I like it.

Of course criminals stil have guns, but for a random guy who lost his job and want to take revenge it is neigh impossible to just buy an AK47 and shoot all his colleagues. Quite a safe feeling actually.

MrAlternateTape,

Violence is justified when you have no other means left to defend yourself or someone else otherwise.

At which point I would like to add that people will sometimes not be able to see the means they have left because they are put in a stressful situation in a second. I feel like you can’t really blame them for that.

Violence as a response should always be in proportion. That should avoid escalation. In an ideal world.

Unfortunately some people won’t stop. Those people need to be put into prison where they cannot hurt anyone anymore.

MrAlternateTape,

I was installing Ubuntu for the first time on my laptop. My laptop had two hardisks, an SSD with Windows and a drive that I could switch out for a CD-rom drive by hand.

I decided to install Linux on the second drive. So I install, reboot, and Grub loads up…and tells me it cannot find the drive.

I eventually find the command fwsetup, which lets me boot into the BIOS again. Of course I don’t know what is going on, zo I just reboot and now it loads my Windows installation on the SSD.

So at least that is intact. I reboot again, and I’m stuck in the Grub bootloader again. The second drive just would not load properly to boot from it. Very annoying. I tried everything I could think of, everything I found on the Internet, it just would not boot the Linux drive.

In the end I just split my SSD and installed Linux next to Windows. I did split the second disk too, so my home directory is on the second disk and now everything works.

However, it’s a Toshiba laptop that gave me lots of trouble before with installing Windows before. I have decided that this is how it will run and I’m not messing with it again. The panic when I feel I broke it again is just not worth it.

Advice on helping a loved one through alcoholism?

My fiance has been struggling a lot lately with this and it’s taking a toll on me. I’m doing all I can and all I know how to do but it’s getting really hard and exhausting to deal with the constant cycle of abuse and then apology and then abuse and then apology over and over and over again for months. Usually day by day. I...

MrAlternateTape,

It’s make or break time. Either she gets into a program to quit and actually quits, or you leave. Even if you love that person.

My experience is that you will be tempted to help them, but by helping you keep enabling their addiction. Not only that, but costs you a lot of energy to do this too. It’s not a balanced relation and the abuse will not stop, it will only get worse. It will cost you a lot, and it’s much better to take your loss now and leave.

So protect yourself, stand your ground. She either quits completely with your support or she loses you.

Good luck. I have seen some of what an alcohol addiction can do, and I absolutely do not wish it to happen on anyone else, but in particular the victims of the alcoholic.

MrAlternateTape,

It sounds really beautiful and all, but the abuse will stay unless real consequences wake them up. Consequences that they cannot talk themselves out of, since they usually are real good talkers.

So take care of yourself, leave them be in their misery or stay a victim. I know what I would choose.
