Father of https://forum.basedcount.com/u/flairchange_bot and https://forum.basedcount.com/u/AutoMod.

Developer of Based Count.

I’ve sorta built this place.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

With my recent de-modding and ban from the DnDMemes sub, I now have plenty of time to touch grass and help grow this community/instance. AMA I guess? (ttrpg.network)

For the record, I fully support what the remaining mod team is doing, they are a wonderful group and I trust them completely. I don’t regret the choices I made, only that my actions got a few other mods shit canned in the process.

Nerd02,

A king till the very end. A hero who went out with a blast. In a word: based.

Nerd02,

How about more pets in general? Gimme those pet turtle and pet spiders content

Nerd02,

Now I finally understand the reasons behind the Russian invasion.

Nerd02,

Same lol. I managed to break both my community as well as the entire instance by messing with those settings. The UI could be a bit more user friendly on that imo.

Right now the language selector has become the part of the admin UI that no one on my team is allowed to touch, under death threath, lmao.

Nerd02,

Regular firefox with enhanced protection on by default + ublock origin does most of the work for me. Personally I also like to add a user agent switcher on top of it. Oh and the Facebook container extension, that one is a must.

Nerd02,

They look great, thanks for sharing! I'm "stealing" these for my instance, can't wait to see the 0.18.0 implementation.

Nerd02,

It's actually pretty easy on the admin side, there's a guide on the lemmy docs and all of that. If the beehaw admins saw this they could add it without too much trouble.

Nerd02,

The jokes really write themselves, don't they?

Nerd02,

Agreed. Sh.itjust.works has plenty of interesting communities, pressing the big red button for just one name seems a bit overkill.

Nerd02,

Couldn't the protocol be updated to be more compliant with the right to be forgotten? Something like, when a user deletes a comment it gets deleted from the DB of every federated instance. Sure enough, admins might have made backups and that would theoretically go against the GDPR but still... you can only apply these laws to a certain extent. It's the same as you posting a picture on Facebook, me downloading it and you deleting it afterwards. Even if you were to make a GDPR request to Meta you still couldn't get the picture on my PC. But that's not Meta's fault, they can't do much about that.

Nerd02,

This. Defed is not the magic weapon that will solve all your problems. Captcha and email filters should be on by default though.

Nerd02,

I think you used the correct word: fetching. The other instance has to go through everything new coming from the first instance and sync itself up. That takes time. How long? Depends on the machine and the load.

Also, if the comment does not appear at all the two instances might not be federated. That's a whole different issue.

Nerd02,

The pain of working on the lemmy frontend. I "fixed" this by turning off prettier.

Nerd02,

I STRONGLY ADVISE you against doing the following, but for educational reasons, just rename the file .husky/pre-commit to anything else. I called mine _pre-commit and slapped a README next to it documenting what I did. This will turn off the husky pre commit job, which is what runs prettier.

Not sure if it's the same issue you are having, in my case prettier failed to run and that didn't allow me to commit at all.

Nerd02,
  1. No. It's been a requested feature for years but as of now it's not a thing. Hopefully the devs will add it soon enough, with the huge influx of Reddit refugees coming. My team and I are working on an implementation for our modded instance, but I'd prefer this to be handled by someone who knows what they're doing.
  2. You can only create communities in instances where you have an account. To create communities in multiple instances you'd need multiple accounts.
  3. You'd have to recreate a community over there and start from scratch. No way to port it. I don't know much about this, though. I have yet to explore kbin (I've been on this site for only a week now)
  4. I believe so but again, not sure.
  5. On there? Idk. But I know !newcommunities is a thing.
Nerd02,

Friendly reminder that if you aren't hosting your own instance you don't have "your own Reddit"

...nor blackjack, nor hookers, for that matter..

Nerd02,

I guess I've been living under a rock because no, I had not heard of this. I believe it can be a huge opportunity for the protocol and instances shouldn't insta defed them, however we should also be wary of mega corporations getting too big of an influence over the Fediverse. In the future, not respecting Facebook's (or any other giga platform's) TOS might be a death sentence for growing instances, and that would in turn spell the doom of ActivityPub turning everything back into a centralized mega site.

question regarding external NSFW communities.

Hi, reddit refugee here. I saw the rule in the main post stating that this instance will not allow NSFW content for now due to the legal ramifications & moderating needs. I 100% understand and agree with that decision, however, does this mean that I (as a user registered to sh.itjust.works) cannot subscribe to, read, or post in...

Nerd02,

If I understand correctly the way the protocol works, when you federate to a community you are instructing your instance's server (in this case sh.itjust.works) to start copying every post and comment that is posted on the target community. This would in turn mean that, if you federate with an NSFW community, the sh.itjust.works admin would start copying NSFW posts to his server, with all the legal repercussions of this.

Of course, if this was actually a problem for the admins they'd have turned off federation / put federation on allow list / would have defederated from a bunch of NSFW instances. Considering none of these are the case, I'd say you can chill and just subscribe to whatever community interests you.

Nerd02,

As others have said, the closest thing to the Reddit AutoMod is the word filtering REGEX, which is configured at instance level by your instance's admins.

My team and I are planning on building an AutoMod bot of our own for our modded Lemmy instance, but since we don't consider it a priority it will come in due time, right now we are all busy working on other projects (all Lemmy related).

Nerd02,

Hi, welcome on board from one refugee to another. Yeah federations are indeed a bit confusing to wrap your head around. I like to think I've figured it out, but who knows...

  1. Not sure I understood what you mean. Can't you just subscribe to the communities you care about? It'd be like joining a subreddit.

  2. Yes.
  3. Not sure if there are any better sites for this, personally I use https://browse.feddit.de/
  4. It should be pretty lightweight, though if you don't have lots of RAM your user experience might be hurt a bit. I'll relay this to the guy who's hosting my instance, I'm not sure which config he's rocking. But personally mine feels overloaded at times, so whatever I've got you might want a little more than that. Anyway, if you like the idea of owning the metal that's fine but know that you can easily host a decently sized lemmy on a VPS for less than $10.
  5. Not that I know of, each instance has its own database where everything is contained. Posts and comments are synced among instrances using ActivityPub but I believe accounts only live on one server. In order to do that you'd need to manually access the database on both instances.
