NoRamyunForYou,

Exciting 😀

NoRamyunForYou,

Our parents adopted a cat a few years ago now, and they haven’t installed a cat flap yet because he’ll bring home a mouse, and they don’t want him to bring them inside the house. So for now, they’ve been opening and closing the door everytime (they’ve setup a little security cam at the door so they know when he comes back), which unfortunately involves opening the door in the middle of the night.

So I’ve been meaning to try and build a “smart” cat flap that utilizes image recognition to detest if he’s got a mouse in his mouth or not.

I had previously done a bit of research last year and gave up on it for some reason. Here’s to hoping I get a bit further down the road this time, and have some success lol.

NoRamyunForYou,

Would that be some sort of frigate setup?

Honestly I just started thinking about this again yesterday so I basically know nothing lol. Though i did come across frigate, and it did make me want to try and setup a local home security system (as I’ve been meaning to get away from using a wireless one from one of the big manufacturers of such things).

I’ve been doing a bit of a dive into something called YOLOv8, which seems to be an object detection model, where you can use existing models, or train your own. Utilizing that on maybe a RPi 5 with a camera and a Google Coral (which from my understanding, supercharges your hardware’s ability to process such things), and then using the output from the model somehow to control some type of actuation (electromagnet maybe?) to lock or unlock a catflap.

But I think the hardware is a bit hard to track down

Yeah I think from memory, one of the main reasons I had abandoned it last time I looked was that it was so hard to get the relevant hardware. Having a look again, it seems that most things are quite readily available now :)

NoRamyunForYou,

What type of hardware are you running if you don’t mind me asking?

NoRamyunForYou,

Huh. Super interesting! I should give this an initial go, and maybe when I come up with my “own” solution, benchmark them against each other. Wonder if there’s a trade off (e.g., chatgpt is more accurate but takes longer due to all the back and forth required, whereas the local solution may not be as accurate but is faster)

It’s honestly amazing how quickly all this stuff is evolving and growing. Thank you for that tip 👍😄

NoRamyunForYou,

What was the problem with cats and cat flaps?

Doesn’t seem to be an issue for this guy. They installed a cat door on the little pool storage house thingy they have in the yard, so that he can get in and out of that as he pleases (it’s sort of like his own little house 😄), and he doesn’t seem to have a problem with it.

Also keeping them in overnight means way less catfights/vet bills.

Definitely agree with this one, though unfortunately this fella really does needs to take his (what we assume is his toilet break) little wander at 4am. The whole thing with him not wanting to use a toilet indoors is another thing all together… Maybe it has something to do with the fact he was basically a street cat for a bit.

NoRamyunForYou,

Haha, yeah the microchip thing is something I’d like to have built in as well.

NoRamyunForYou,

Haha. Though seeing as their on their 8th YOLO adventure (different versions are actually built by different people it seems), maybe they have a method to their YOLOing madness😆

Oh man, don’t tell me that, now I’ll have to do it!

You definitely shouldn’t visit mouser.com then hahaha 😆

NoRamyunForYou,

I didn’t even realize it was feijoa season until I went into the office earlier this week, and it seemed every other person had a bag full of em on their desk lol.

Went over to mum’s earlier today, and she gave us some as well 😆

NoRamyunForYou,

Has there been any discussions/thoughts around making these Daily Korero threads less frequent?, i.e., weekly, every other day etc.

There’s obviously not a ton of us in here, and some days (like today), there’s basically nothing here. Obviously there’s nothing stopping anyone replying to a thread from yesterdays Korero, but maybe it leads to a lack of visibility? i don’t know… Just spitting out some ideas :)

NoRamyunForYou,

I have noticed that the daily threads seem to average alot less comments now compared to a few months ago. Do you have access to the trend on active users etc?

NoRamyunForYou,

Ooh Im a big fan of Ark. I used to live right in front of them, so they had become my main source of beens at that time. I’ve since started trying out more roasters, but have always been meaning to go back to them.

NoRamyunForYou,

the stats are a bit misleading because they don’t count people who participate here but their accounts are on other instances.

Huh interesting. I guess that’s another quirk with this whole federation stuff. Maybe it’s something that can be fixed in the future.

NoRamyunForYou,

Oh yeah, I remember that wine coffee. 😄

I’m the same sometimes. Not necessarily on coffee, but I get fixated on wanting to try something new, and sometimes it just doesn’t work out lol.

NoRamyunForYou,

Both needing repairs? Imagine we don’t have Williams in China.

NoRamyunForYou,

Yeah, got caught out by that time frame.

I like to think I’m quite concious of the environment and try to make frequent decisions during day to day life to “minimize” my impact, but in the back of my mind, I always had the “at least it shouldn’t get truly terrifying anytime in my useful life time” as sort of a coping mechanism to all the doom and gloom. Now I’m not so sure of that lol.

NoRamyunForYou,

And it’s so frustrating that governments around the world seem to not care…

NoRamyunForYou,

I’ve actually been thinking more and more recently around setting up a local backup (Nas?) But haven’t really done much research and the more I think about it, I wonder what I have to really backup (other than my photos which are stored on an external hard drive and online).

Just before I read this, I actually saw a nice setup using a rpi5 and some SSD’s. Is using a rpi a good way to go about something like this?

NoRamyunForYou,

Yeah that’s the one.

For my usecase, it’s mostly been checking that Voltages and Currents align with what I expect them to be, checking components to see if they are what I think they are (e.g., Resistance of resistors, whether Diodes are faulty or not), checking whether two points are connected, checking whether signals into and out of microcontrollers are as expected etc,. Things like that off the top of my head. Though I’m probably only scratching at the surface of what they can be used for.

Doing a bit of a deep dive into some forums, it seems that paying more will get you better accuracy, but the more important thing is that the real cheap ones most likely don’t come with a lot of protection, which is okay for when your looking at 5v type stuff, but if you want to look at anything to do with Mains voltage etc, comes into play.

NoRamyunForYou,

Now I’m seeing that they have portable oscilloscopes! Amazing lol. I was thinking about getting a cheapo bench oscilloscope even though ni strictly don’t need one at the moment, now I realise it’s more attainable than I had thought.

NoRamyunForYou,

Yeah - I’d only seen a post on his Instagram at the time, but starting watching the Youtube video today whilst prepping for dinner lol. Havent yet finished the video though.

Do you have any recommendations as to what you might look at?

NoRamyunForYou,

Is failure in SSD’s more common than HDD’s? Ideally I’d want to use it as my “offline” storage option, using it instead of my current external HDD that I use.

NoRamyunForYou,

Is that mirrored array referring to RAID?

I literally have no knowledge in this stuff. Once you have something like this setup, how does it work? Once you configure it, does it automatically backup files in a certain location on your computer?, or do you manually move files onto it that you want to backup?

NoRamyunForYou,

Hmm that’s pretty interesting. I’d always assumed (I guess they were talking about reliability alot when SSD’s became widely distributed) that they were a lot more robust.

NoRamyunForYou,

I always mean to do some more research into the topic, and never get past that stage lol. Maybe this time will be different… maybe… lol
