Liberal politics has put the cart before the horse when it comes to the Democrat party. The voters/base exist to validate and serve the party rather than the way around. Voting is not a way for them to get material benefits or enact a platform, it’s a way to signify that they’re reasonable and embrace the meritocratic/technocratic system. Pushback on the party doesn’t compute for them because they see pushback as something the party does to the voters for being unreasonable.

I find it tends to be a “big fish small pond” phenomenon. People who are kind of middling, maybe slightly elevated income by national standards but because they live in low CoL/low competition areas they see themselves as upper echelon. They’re the top earners for their podunk small town and thus are resentful they’re not treated as equals by the “urban elites.”
