I'd like to see a reality TV competition where being kind and friendly is promoted and the vile aspects of competition are (heavily) penalized.
I don't want a popularity contest, but I'm pretty tired of seeing petty, two-faced-backstabbing seeming be glamourized as "winning".

No idea how you would do it, but winning at all costs isn't a win in my books.

This post brought to you after seeing that CBC commercial where somebody says, "There aren't any friends in competition." There damn well should be.

Why is it that I really should be in bed yet I'm sitting here thinking, "I've never tried to compile my own kernel in Linux. I wonder how involved that would be?"

To be honest, I have contemplated that before. It's also when I should be doing something else.

I should find a guide for that. Or is that an idea from the past and no one does that anymore?

I've just used Mint for my Plex server for a few years, but I do have another (ancient) ThinkPad I could try things.

Perrin49,
@Perrin49@coales.co avatar

@msh Honestly, I've had this idea a number of times. Then I start to look into it and feel overwhelmed.

Someday I'll just start breaking stuff until it works.

When Krispy Kreme opened their first location in Calgary, in a corner of the Sunridge Mall parking lot, it was packed. And it stayed busy for a couple of weeks. But that petered out, and eventually it was pretty empty there.

I would stop in for a donut and coffee, and they would give me a donut. I always felt a little guilty just buying a coffee, and their coffee was only okay. If I wanted a coffee only, I would have gone to the Good Earth inside the mall.

Eventually it shut down, only to be replaced by a Tim Hortons. And that location + drive thru is ALWAYS busy.

I don't think Krispy Kreme was worse. It's just that Tims has a devoted following. I still miss that fresh glazed Krispy Kreme and watching them being made.

@Perrin49@coales.co avatar

@msh Everyone of the ones you got in-store were hot and soft. I thought about it because I saw a local ad for an event mentioning they would have mini-doughnuts, and it reminded me of seeing the mini-doughnut machines and then Krispy Kreme was the same thing.

I wonder when they will open a location here again? They are expanding since coming out of bankruptcy

The Kentucky Derby ran yesterday. The winner had a time just over 2 minutes. The TV broadcast was over 5 hours!

I guess it must be worth it but I can't imagine trying to come up with enough storylines to keep viewers engaged while waiting for the actual race.

Here's my take on the big rezoning thing:

It's not nearly as impactful as most people on either the for- and against- sides think.

Right now, over 95% of the individual requests to do this sort of rezoning on an individual lot are approved.

This change, if it goes through, will speed things up by a few months in a process that takes a few years.

It's just not that big of a deal for anyone.

Perrin49,
@Perrin49@coales.co avatar

@msh @roger Take a look at the houses that are being replaced now. Smaller homes on large lots being razed to be replaced by behemoth houses. That's not preserving any neighbourhood character.
I am sure there will be some issues, but parking and traffic issues are less important than homelessness.

That jackass with the loud vehicle blasting past you on the right?

Turns out he isn't seeking attention at all. He merely finds joy in the suffering of others!

@msh Friday night, as it was getting dark, I kept hearing loud bass and thought it was from a car. When it persisted for 20 minutes I went to investigate.
It was one person on a bench by the pathway past the end of the street. They were listening to their phone with earbuds and a big-ass woofer with LEDs. That woofer must have had a heck of a battery, it was large. Guess they really wanted to feel that thumping.

That's what I was hearing in my living room, 10+ houses away.

(I asked them to turn it down, they did, I thanked them)

A friend recommended the Tides Near Me app but I'm not impressed. You select Canada and it doesn't list Alberta or Saskatchewan. 🤪

@msh @puzzled The app would be beneficial for The Last Saskatchewan Pirate!

Just thinking back when I went to the campus comedy night mainly to see "Corky and the Juice Pigs" and the opening act was two guys just starting their band going by the name "Barenaked Ladies".

I wonder what became of them?

I remember playing God of War and liking it a lot right up until the final battle. At that point I was defeated. It didn't seem to matter how quickly I pressed the button that popped up on the screen, I would die. I tried on and off again for days, weeks.

Then one day I had a realization. This was on my first LCD tv. So I went into the settings and found a video game mode to turn off all picture processing. Decided to try again.

First time, easy peasy. Success.

Perrin49,
@Perrin49@coales.co avatar

@msh You have no idea how much I raged. And the thing is, I KNEW about that issue and thought I had turned it off for that HDMI input. But I probably thoughtlessly changed it back when watching a movie (it was a PS2).

The TV itself was stellar, Sony XBR8, until one day a couple years ago it just wouldn't turn on anymore. I got 10+ years out of it. It's still in my kitchen waiting to be hauled to electronic recycling (I haven't done so because it's HEAVY for an LCD, but the early LED backlight added a bunch of weight).

I've just become so jaded with politics that I tend to avoid it.

I try to keep up with the topics, but the political parties all seem to be choices between bad and worse.

Picking the least evil is a poor way to choose leaders.

So I had a freaky day yesterday and I wonder how often this happens...

I was having lunch with 2 coworkers and the younger brother of one of them. The little brother is "pivoting" from service industry work to infosec and was looking for advice/mentoring/etc from us older techie engineer folk, and the older coworker mentioned he pivoted twice...engineering to animation then back to engineering.

So I laughed and said I think animation is an engineering discipline because I did animation before getting my engineering degree, and I new a lady who had an engineering degree but became an animator and she invited me to join...

...and he completed my sentence "Quickdraw Animation Society?!"

Both of our brains exploded simultaneously.

I didn't actually meet my co-worker for the first time in 2018 when I started my current job. For the first time in SIX YEARS we finally realised we first met at QAS when we both did animation... in 1988!

🤯

Perrin49,

Electricity generation is a provincial jurisdiction, I would really like to see my provincial government use these O&G royalties that are creating the budget surplus and use them to build more power generation.
But maybe they can't since they deregulated the industry, so the only thing that they can do is to blame EV owners and the federal government.
They just seem to spend so much time blaming others.

Perrin49,
@Perrin49@coales.co avatar

@msh Well, there IS going to be new generation coming online this year, then Alberta should have excess capacity.

I just really hate the childish finger pointing. If they want us to "tell the Feds" we don't want blackouts in 2035, what about in 2024? Weasels, all of them

Thank you for Pascal, the programming language I and many others got started with.

Perrin49,
@Perrin49@coales.co avatar

@thomasfuchs How did you get started on Pascal?
In order, I started on a Commodore Pet, so C Basic, then C 64, then MS Basic.
Then there was Fortran, Q-Basic, then there was a bit of Pascal.

I still enjoy a good New Years Eve celebration but now the desire to sleep in my own bed and not have a hangover tomorrow make that much more challenging.

Perrin49,
@Perrin49@coales.co avatar

@msh I do enjoy going out someplace on NYE. I like the festive nature and the anticipation. I like when places make an effort to celebrate, and I am willing to pay a cover so long as it is reflected in the experience.
The stress of getting a taxi after midnight isn't much fun, but seeing how many balloons can be stuffed into the cab was always fun.

I haven't gone out the past few years - the favourite haunts shut down over covid, and the parties I was invited to are house parties in the deep south. Those tend to be kind of boring if you aren't drinking, so I just politely decline.

I wish I could could buy shoes with different left and right sizes. The big toes on my feet are different (the left is longer) , and the result is a 1.5 size difference between them. I wonder what it would be like to have a proper sized shoe for my right foot

@msh I'm sure my walk has adapted. The only time I've gotten something "correctly" fitted was the boots I got for myself from Alberta Boot when I became mortgage free. I really should wear those more.
