This is getting a sequence? Damn, that’s some good news, the original was a very fun Mecha/Action movie.

Also means we may get Angela again in future SRW games. www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkMMKc3v0ck

Playing… Picross S5?!

Not exactly the kind of game people would expect me to be playing given my posting history, but I do enjoy those games and often use them as a palate cleanser when a need a break from my usual RPGs/VNs.

Current status: Picross 150/150, Mega Picross 140/150, Color Picross: 10/30, Clip Picross: 0/150, Extra: 0/5.

I won’t necessarily wait until I finish this one before starting another game, in particular because I have an extended 4-day holiday which is helping me relax and get my head back in a good state for gaming, but I’ll tell you how things went next week.

Phelpssan,
@Phelpssan@lemmy.world avatar

Did you just did all those puzzles in a week?

No, I do same you do and always have one Picross game “unfinished” and go through it slowly. This week however I was not in the mood for playing other stuff so I did a huge batch of puzzles, I think it was close to 100.

Also, how long does it take you to finish a whole Picross game? Number of hours taking me to finish these games is embarrassingly high.

The games show a clock with the total time once you finish all puzzles, I just checked and it took me 25-30h to complete each of them. I’ve finished S1-S4 and also the Genesis/Master System one.

If you haven’t played TTYD before then don’t miss this chance. That game is a masterpiece.

According to the DF review vídeo the account is required on PS/Xbox unless you’re offline, but entirely optional on the Switch.

It’s discussed around 15min into the video.

to look up and discover I’m already almost halfway through the game.

It’s more like 30%. The first world has a lot of missions, but they are shorter than most of the late-game ones since several of them are tutorial stages.

Finished The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails!

As mentioned in a previous comment, this was a quite fun old-school action RPG, reminds me of the Ys games (not surprising given it’s from the same developer).

Since this is an older PSP game ported to modern consoles it has a few issues and lacks a bit of QOL, but the only thing that really annoyed me was the controls for the “grapple” skill - having it mapped to the same button as jumping leads to some really awkward moments where you are trying to double-jump and ends up grappling to something else.

Also really enjoyed the extended epilogue chapter which reminds me of Lunar 2, one of my favorite old-schoold RPGs, and if my backlog wasn’t massive I’d even try the NG+ for the extra stages and content.

Not sure what I’m going to play now. I want to go back to VNs which means I should probably resume Witch on the Holy Night, but I’m more in the mood for comedy so I may start Little Busters! instead. I’ll think about it later today and comment on the next thread.

Finished Cassette Beasts!

A very fun indie monster collecting game. Visually reminds me a bit of the GBA Pokemons, and this game has a lot of good ideas that I’d like to see in more games of this genre.

In particular, I really like the more open-world approach, the environmental puzzles (reminded me a bit of Golden Sun), and the vulnerabilities system - instead of being simply “fire does extra damage to ice”, it’s based on buffs/debuffs. If you hit a Wind monster with a fire attack you trigger an “updraft” creating a wind barrier to protect it, but if you hit a plastic monster you melt it and change its type to Poison and apply the status effect at the same time.

The OST is amazing, and I really like how all battle themes have a vocal version that plays when you (or your enemy) trigger a Fusion. This is a small thing, but does a really good job in adding more hype to those battles.

It’s fairly short (took me ~20h to finish the main story), but there’s a lot of monsters left to collect plus some post-game content that I’m interested in doing eventually.

Playing The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails!

Not much to add to this one. Slow progress since I was mostly playing Cassette Beasts this last week.

Definitely recommend it if you enjoy this type of game.

Finished Persona 5 Tactica!

Most of my comments about this game are on the previous thread.

Overall a fairly simple game, but I had a good time with it. Worth mentioning that it doesn’t seem to have much replay value other than playing or higher difficulties or trying to complete the Compendium.

Playing The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails!

A very charming Action RPG from the makers of Ys.

It’s stage-based, which makes it a good game for playing in short bursts, with the stages having specific “goals” that grant you bonuses if you manage to do it. I really like the “seasons” design, where after you beat a stage you can come back and play it in a different season of the year, which is effectively a new (and harder) stage based on the original one.

Combat is not as fluid as recent Falcom ARPGs, but it gets better as you unlock new abilities and spells. Story is fairly simple, but has that usual Falcom thing where the NPCs are interesting and fun to chat with. Though it also has some of the usual Falcom annoyances, like a decent amount of missables - so make sure to explore properly before going into a new chapter.

I believe I’m nearing the endgame (Chapter 6), though I haven’t played much this past few days as I have been focused on other hobbies. Will resume and try to finish this one next week.

And while we are at it, what are your new year’s gaming resolution? Play more games? Play less games? Don’t pre-order? Always pre-order?

Honestly, it’s just “beat more games than you buy”. I have a gigantic backlog and I need to keep moving forward with it.

Phelpssan,
@Phelpssan@lemmy.world avatar

How long did it take you to beat Persona 5 Tactica?

Around 20h.

That’s a good resolution. I usually only buy a game when I am ready to play it, or when I am sure I’ll play it next and it’s on sale, otherwise I don’t buy games, no matter how good the sale is.

I’m a physical game collector and I love some niche genres, so I tend to buy games early to avoid the risk of not finding them later.

What are you drinking New Year's, New Yeeear's Eve?

My adult daughter is ending her “year of no brain damage” that was her resolution for 2023 (she said no drinks no drugs no COVID no hitting her head on anything, and actually pulled it off) and asked me for a blue margarita, so that’s one. If I get to the store today, I may have a margarita with champagne (margarita...

To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure.

Leaning towards a Sour (Whisky or Amaretto are my favorites), or something creamy like a Brandy Alexander.

Played a bit of Theatrhythm Final Bar Line!

Went back to clear the last DLC (FF16) on Expert and Ultimate. With this I achieved my main goal for this game - while there’s still the Supreme (“Extra Hard”) difficulty left to do I’m not sure I want to try beating it.

Current Stats: Expert: 523/523, Ultimate: 523/523, Supreme: 16/232, Cards: 1225/1225, Level 99: 104/104, Quests: 100%.

Playing Persona 5 Tactica!

One thing that really impressed me when I played P5 Strikers earlier this year was its strong story, it felt like a proper sequel to P5, not just a spin-off. Unfortunately, this is not the case for P5 Tactica - while the story is still decent, it’s more in line with other spin-offs like Persona Q, a side story focused on the new characters (in this case, Erina and Toshiro) where the Phantom Thieves are along for the ride.

That being said, I’m having fun with this one. It’s very much a “light” tactical game, asides from some puzzle-like optional quests the game has been quite easy, but it’s nice and polished and has interesting mechanics.

The battles are on the short side, you only use three characters at the same time and they’re usually over in a 5-8 turns, which makes it a good game for short gaming sessions. Performance on the Switch has been solid overall, the only thing I have to complain are mildy annoying loading times when starting a stage (~10-12s).

Spoiler for late-game mechanics, nothing story-relatedLate-game stages expand to four characters at the same time, though the 4th slot is fixed and is a character with modified mechanics compared to the main cast.

I just finished Mission 45 and I believe I’m on the final stretch, expect to finish this one either today or tomorrow.

Finished Broforce!

Bought this game mainly for multiplayer, but had never finished the campaign, decided to do it in singleplayer. And I’m not sure it was a good idea - this game is very fun when you have a bunch of friends running around, blowing stuff and laughing at the chaos, but it gets very frustrating when playing solo.

You die too easily and too often, and since you always start the stage with a single life any time you don’t have an extra life available near the start you’re going to struggle. Once you have a buffer or two most stages flow well, but there were plenty of “die 10 times before making it to the extra life” moments.

There’s a lot of deaths that feels like bullshit too. I get that the random nature of the characters is part of the game and sometimes you’re going to get a shit character for the stage you’re on, but many times you just jump across a ledge and die instantly to a previously off-screen enemy, or die to stuff unexpectedly falling from above.

Finally, holy crap that final boss had a LOT of lag (at least on the Switch version). Might actually be a good thing considering how fast and chaotic this game is, but I can’t imagine how bad that would get with 4 players.

Finished A Short Hike!

What an adorable and relaxing little game. Gameplay is simple - you just explore, glide around, and chat to people while slowly going up a trail. It’s very short (took me something like 2h), but I was smiling all the way through.

Definitely going to replay this one.

Finished Torchlight 2!

Felt like playing a good Diablo-like hack-and-slash, and saw one of my favorites on sale in the eShop. Did a run with an Engineer and a Cat pet, just smashing my way through with a hammer.

Haven’t started any games after that yet, I’ve been a distracted by Magic Arena since yesterday’s update added the Khans of Tarkir set and this lets me play my favorite deck ever (Izzet Phoenix) in that client. They also added a new format (“TImeless”) that has been very interesting so far.

Phelpssan,
@Phelpssan@lemmy.world avatar

How much of a replay value does “A Short Hike” has?

Not entirely sure, but howlongtobeat.com has it with 4.5h to 100%.

I mainly want to replay it for the relaxing feel, it was such a great experience overall.

@Phelpssan@lemmy.world avatar

Probably Metroid Prime. Both the Title Theme and the Menu Theme are fantastic.

Xenoblade games also have brilliant title themes. Here’s the one for the first game.

Now, for some spice, let’s branch into a type of game I think most people here won’t have played - Visual Novels often have great title themes.

Phelpssan,
@Phelpssan@lemmy.world avatar

That one was so good.

Haven’t played this game in decades but instantly started hearing the song in my head when I saw your post.

Finished Super Mario RPG!

Most of my comments are on last week’s post, I finished it later that same day. Great game but shows its age even with the remake.

Finished Panzer Dragoon: Remake!

Decided to beat some short games I got for cheap a while back. This is a nice old-school rail shooter with a fantastic OST, but it’s very short (~2 hours to finish), so definitely don’t pick it up for the normal $25 price. For the $2.5 I paid for it was good fun.

Finished Circuits!

Got this one on a friend’s recommendation. Very interesting music-based puzzle game, but if you don’t have a good sound setup on your living room definitely play this one with headphones - some of the pieces you have to put together have very subtle differences and can be hard to distinguish.

Phelpssan, (edited )
@Phelpssan@lemmy.world avatar

A friend of mine mentioned it to me when it was announced but I didn’t pick it up yet. It does look very interesting, but might be too stressful for me right now. :D

Edit: Messaged my friend about it, he played it and liked it. High praise for the visuals and soundtrack, mentions it’s a bit of “raising sim” which may be a pro or a con depending on who you ask. Also says it can be quite disturbing at times.

Phelpssan,
@Phelpssan@lemmy.world avatar

I was playing Broforce’s campaign mode this morning, kinda want to finish it this time but it’s getting very frustrating very quickly.

Phelpssan,
@Phelpssan@lemmy.world avatar

Fun game in multiplayer, but too many bullshit deaths to be really enjoyable singleplayer.

Phelpssan,
@Phelpssan@lemmy.world avatar

Finished Radiant Silvergun!

Well, at least on the lowest difficulty, but I got to see the ending of the story which was surprisingly interesting. I’ll keep playing it from time to time, next goal is beat it on Arcade Mode.

Started Super Mario RPG!

So far it feels very faithful to the SNES version. If that’s a good or bad thing… it depends on who you ask.

If you played it back in the SNES days it’s going to be a great nostalgia trip, but if you never played the original game it’s going to feel bit dated and lacking in depth. It’s a very fun game, but not sure it’s worth paying full price without the nostalgia part.

Should be fairly close to the end, I think I’ll be able to finish it this weekend.

@Phelpssan@lemmy.world avatar

Finished Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Absolutely amazing game, my favorite 2D Mario since the SNES era. Must-play for anyone who enjoys platform games.

Playing Radiant Silvergun.

I’ve been slowly progressing on Story Mode/Very Easy, which is still pretty damn hard. Made to what I think is the last boss yesterday, so hopefull I’ll be able to at least clear this one at least on the lowest difficulty soon.

This is a fairly old game, originally released for the Saturn, but it’s said to be one of the best of this genre - and the more I play, the more I think it deserves all the praise it gets. There’s so much variety in stages and interesting boss designs that I just keep restarting every time I get a game over to see more.

Story mode also has a nice progression system where you can keep your powerups and get more lives after restarting, which makes it much easier for people not experienced in bullet hell games to move forward and see more of the game.

Phelpssan,
@Phelpssan@lemmy.world avatar

Probably Aldnoah.Zero. Very interesting premise and early episodes, but then it turns into a huge writing mess. And let’s not talk about Season 2.

At least the action was decent?
