more feedback, when I reply to a topic, I would like for my reply to be on top so that I can easily see replies to it and edit it and stuff. (Uhh I just refreshed and both were at the top. I just be crazy or slow)
case in point, I made a mistake in my other comment thinking that the colored lines on the sides of comment chains weren't there (they very much are, I'm clearly blind).
Also for some reason the comment box doesn't auto capitalize the first letter of a sentence.

The protest is not about the fact that they are charging for it. The protest is about the fact of how much they are charging for it. When compared to imgur the rates are absolutely insane.
I keep seeing this incorrectly reported and it drives me crazy. No developer is upset about Reddit charging for the API access. What they are upset about is the fact that Reddit has jacked the price of that API access up so high that no third party apps could ever afford to use it.
I understand that, but framing it as "reddit users are mad because reddit wants to charge for API access" paints reddit users as entitled, when what is actually happening is "reddit users are mad because reddit decided to charge for API access with only 30 days notice and set the prices so high that third party app developers would have to pay potentially millions of dollars per year in order to access it".
There is a massive difference between those two statements. One makes reddit users look like a bunch of entitled assholes, and the other frames the situation correctly and truthfully.
So it's just an expansion of what can be monetized within a server. I see nothing wrong with this. It even gives small indie devs like me a chance at a small revenue stream.
If you don't like the things a specific server is doing, leave. It's pretty simple.
The usernames stuff was stupid, but pray tell. How did users get "screwed out of their usernames".
Did you know that when choosing a username you could just do your name and the number sans the hashtag and it's functionality exactly the same as before.
It was a stupid change and unnecessary, but nobody got screwed out of anything.
Here's the thing... If your name was gamers_mate#2002 before the change, after the change you could make your name gamers_mate2002 and functionally nothing would change.
As I've said elsewhere, the user name stuff was stupid, but it's not that big of a deal.
You seem to be forgetting that it is the server owner who decides these things. If you're on a server that is monetizing memes and you don't like it, leave.

I'm 41 and not only do I play games everyday I also develop them. My girlfriend enjoys the fact that I play games. When we aren't together a lot of the time I will stream them and most of the time she's my only viewer lol

Honestly, if the women you are meeting aren't supportive of your hobbies and what you enjoy doing to relax, then trust me when I say you don't want anything to do with them. These women are telling you who they are, believe them and steer clear.
I feel that a lot of people are missing the point that discord has done something that other software has not. It makes it easy to centralize communication. It is invaluable for small developers.
And while yes the information is not available via general searching, the searching within discord is actually pretty good.
I keep seeing people mention matrix as a viable alternative to discord but my experience with matrix has me calling bs.

I happily pay for discord nitro. I have a bunch of servers that I'm in and interact with daily. Discord has been an amazing tool for me and my friends, for fostering community growth, for facilitating community involvement.
People like to shit on discord, but it is one of the only services that hasn't done some massive f u to it's users.

Perhaps instead of listingn only statistics and pretending that laypeople care, help people see what that would mean for them personally. Get them invested in the idea. Help plant the seeds and allow them to come to the conclusion that things should change. It's like someone saying the government spent a billion dollars on something. Sure, that's a lot of money, but the vast majority of people have no real concept of what a billion of something even is.
