1/ Watched the last two episodes of "Young Sheldon." The penultimate episode, dealing with a sudden death, was the better of the two.

The finale had adult Sheldon and Amy, who are far more annoying than funny to me.

OTOH . . .

2/ The very last shot, of Young Sheldon on the CalTech campus saying he was exactly where he wanted to be, had a certain resonance for me.

Going to CMU for grad school at age 33 was a crazy dramatic break for me, and an amazing experience despite being amazingly difficult.

Updated my big Linux workstation to a new version last week. Worked fine. Yesterday's updates broke something. Windows manager sucks down 99% of each of the 12 CPU's cycles.

Investigating.

Meanwhile, laptops!

Workstation problems solved. I switched to the older X11 windowing system.

Apparently nVidia display hardware and/or drivers don't work well with the new Wayland display system.

Had a good session with dog behaviorist today. I walked his chill small pit bull. Then we walked our dogs together; Daphne (reactive on leash) kept her cool. Then he walked both together, then he handed them both to me.

Next time he brings his more energetic, larger dog.

I tried to avoid the cake for lunch but it was just...sitting there, so smug and beautifully frosted.

Bet it regrets that now, huh.

@lilithsaintcrow Evolution will eventually make them drab and unappetizing, but for now . . .

1/ Near taken in by a phishing email.

I had JUST done an account-change thing on a credit card website.

So when a "you have a new letter in your account" email, I figured it was a confirmation message.

I had just logged off of the website, so I logged back in and . . .

StefanEJones,
@StefanEJones@dice.camp avatar

2/ ...looked at the top bar, expecting a "something in your mailbox" type icon. Nothing.

Looked for the "secure messages" section. Finally found it. No messages.

Looked back at the email. No instructions on how to get the letter if already logged in, so I clicked the button.

StefanEJones,
@StefanEJones@dice.camp avatar

3/ It went to a broken link. Huh?

Then I thought to check the email address of the notification mail.

Not remotely close.

I probably would have looked a lot more closely if it hadn't been for the coincidence of having just modified my account.

@nyrath I barely remember the series. I didn't know about the prototype model rocket!

1/ A bajillion year ago, when I was a kid, there were fewer TV channels, and no infomercials.

On weekends when there were no sports programming, stations showed old programs. Sitcoms, cop shows, old movies.

Most of these were of no interest to me as a kid.

oh hell yes. i think i just found the original typeface used: it was LTC Spire by the Lanston Type Company

edit: it led to a fascinating web preservation backstory about the origins of the font itself:

@vga256 Oh, my. Memory rush.

I beta tested GeoWorks Ensemble. Co-wrote a quicky book for it, something like "Desktop Publishing with GeoWorks Ensemble," which I sadly never got a copy of.

1/ 20 years ago this morning, I drove as fast as I could from Bend, OR to the @OregonHumane
society in Portland to grab the paperwork for a dog I'd seen on the website.

Kira's owner left notes for her & her "sister" dog, Zoe (who was elsewhere). Never knew why she was given up.

2/ The adoption associate was impressed how well prepared I was. I seemed to know what I was getting into.

But I didn't know that I'd be going home that day with a dog. I thought they'd do a background check or something?

I had all the gear ready at home, but still!

StefanEJones,
@StefanEJones@dice.camp avatar

3/ When we got to the car I opened the driver's door to toss in the paperwork. Not waiting, Kira jumped in, leapt into the back, and stretched out on the rear seat, and looked at me with a "OK, let's get out of here!" grin.

4/ I was a wreck the first few days.

Daphne is smart, generally quiet & well behaved, does fine on her own when I'm on errands, but honest, I out of ideas of fun stuff to do with her to occupy the day.

I try to take a nap, and she politely lays her chin on my shoulder after five minutes as if to say "do something."

Really slacked off last week.

(Srsly, there needs to be a little graph going back a month for each metric.)

(Weight gain metric is actually lbs over goal.)

(Also srsly, I could probably get away with eating a bagel and cream cheese with breakfast now and then.)
