Unfortunately I cannot give you any actual proper advice, on how to improve this situation other than "get the hell out". Which is easier said than done and secondly, I know you are working hard on that. 😔

My Shanling M2X has gotten it's latest firmware update back in August 2021.

I kinda wanna see if I can properly teardown the firmware, see how the firmware is setup, how it works, what internal dependencies there are.

Potentially, see if I could add additional functionality to this cromulent little nugget.

A while back, I already did some minor investigation into this. I know the device offers "Wi-Fi file transfer", which is an simple HTTP server with some craptastic jQuery, so you can drag-and-drop files. That functionality janked out of some opensource iOS library (don't ask... I don't know either :welp: ).

That webserver offers only client-side protection against inspection of the filesystem. Although I have a feeling, that it's running inside some chroot.

Why I think it is running in a chroot is because I am missing all the files I would expect to be there on an regular Linux device of this type. Thinks like the wpa_supplicant.conf, a /boot directory or even as basic as the vmlinuz.

Firmware upgrades are a Mac StuffIt compressed file with a .bin extension. Inside that file, there is an .tar.gz file and a x509 certificate. My guess is the certificate is being used to verify the .tar.gz (or to prevent unsigned upgrades).

The .tar.gz file is really interesting. If you extract that file, you find a whole bunch of sequentially numbered ubifs files. During my quick investigation, they appear to be empty, but they have a filesize of 1 Mb a piece (with the exception of the last file).

My guess is that I need to give up some starting address for reading file list. I would probably wager that I need to merge all those ubifs files before I can read the contents.
